Day 1 - Sydney to Los Angeles

Our trip started at home on Saturday morning.  We all got ready and were ready to leave for a flight in the middle of the day.  But then mum called Qantas to confirm our flight, and found out that it had been postponed til the evening!  So we were all ready with no place to go.  So we played a family game of Monopoly.  Poor Nana who was going to see us off at the airport had to miss a function she had on in the evening to see come to the airport at the new time.  We didn't end up leaving Sydney until 8pm.

Our family had the middle four seats of the 747, so unfortunately noone got a window seat.  Qantas gave us these activity books which had a dedicated channel on the plane's sound system that went with them.  So that kept us fairly well occupied, but we did keep getting interrupted for food etc.  David decided he was going to stay awake all night just to see what would happen.  Nothing happened, but then he fell asleep at breakfast time!

One of the movies we saw on the plane was "First Blood".  I didn't watch much of it.  I did see the scene where Sylvester Stallone is hanging off a cliff with his fingers.  Mum thought it was a strange choice of movie to play - showing how violent America is.

We had a one hour stopover in Honolulu.  I was quite surprised by the strength of the American accents there!

Near the end of the flight from Honolulu to LA, David and I were allowed to go up to the cockpit! It was amazing.  And we also got to see Los Angeles from the cockpit.  Very very cool!

After we arrived in LA (at 6:45pm - before we even left!) we picked up our hire car and drove it to the Ramada Inn at the airport.  Driving on the wrong side of the road was very freaky.  At least we didn't have far to go.
