There's some girls in the pool playing Marco Polo. I haven't played that properly since about 1984-85 in Lisa Wright's swimming pool for some party or other.
My Google rank has gone from 4 to 5 ! Oddly enough, this comes at exactly the same time that they've removed my link due to my association with http://kazza.id.au/ which has also been removed from the top of Google's list. Go figure.
You have just won one million dollars:
1. Who do you call first?
2. What is the first thing you buy for yourself?
I'd go to Europe for a holiday
3. What is the first thing you buy for someone else?
4. Do you give any away? If yes, to whom?
Prolly. Prolly to family and maybe a few close friends. There's always then the difficulty of how much, and who'd get jealous. Would have potential to get rather messy.
5. Do you invest any? If so, how?
Very long and frustrating day. Gonna chicken out of writing anything meaningful and just go to bed.
Too little sleep. Not coping. Everything pissing me off. Too much to do. Never gonna get to bed. At least tomorrow is Friday. Although that doesn't help because I still have a tonne of crap to do and I'm just going to be tired and so I'll have no hope of getting it done.
and also .. my black angels laid their sixth batch of eggs tonight, again on the amazon sword. I *really* need to get them into their own tank.
After getting to bed rather late last night, then not being able to get to sleep, I have been very sleepie all day.
I am also now the happy owner of two tubs of lego. Very exciting. :) Now just need to get some baseboards and I can start mosaicing :) Although of course I should first clean up the study, throw out clutter, build a dev cold fusion server, work on the cia call stats db and do some piano practise.... or just go to bed :)
oh yeah, and it looks like I'll be able to start using http://kazza.id.au again soon.. google appear to have removed the entry.
Just watched the last two episodes of Nip Tuck, and was practically rolling around in laughter over a couple of scenes in the final episode. I haven't laughed that much over a tv show in ages. I know it's a trashy soap opera, but it's somehow compelling, and I found myself rather enjoying it.
I've also started collecting lego for making mosaics. Guy told me of a K-Mart that has the blue lego tubs, so I'm going to trek out tomorrow and see if there's any left. But I want more 1x1 bricks, and bricks of different colours, like brown, grey, tan, orange, purple and more green, so I've started buying lots of it off ebay.
Martial Air (the outsource company I couldn't think of the name of the other day) came out this afternoon after I'd left. Apparently it was not a compressor as first thought, but in fact a capacitor. So our air conditioner was out of action for a full week, we spent hundreds of dollars on portables, not to mention the cost of having the building air conditioning running all weekend, by something relatively simple. Needless to say my boss was not impressed and will be voicing his concerns with Mitsubishi.
ok I have not heard that song in 13 years. In fact I didn't even remember it existed until just now, as I was cleaning out a drawer, and found the lyrics that my brother had written out for me :)
So I've rearranged my study yet again to fit in the filing cabinet. But in the process I decided not to put things back into the shelves/drawers unless I had a good reason for keeping them. All was going well until I got to all the letters I'd gotten from penpals, and then to a collection of "letters" that Jacqui and Chris and I used to write to each other on the outlines in church. I only read bits of a few of them, but they had all sorts of miscellaneous crap on them, including talk about boyfriends and people I might ask to the year 12 formal. I know I should just throw them out, but just think of all the memories I wouldn't be able to dredge up if I did that.. hehe
I also dug out my music books from when I had keyboard lessons in primary school, and worked pretty much all the way through it in a couple of hours! Then got totally frustrated because the chord keys listed were different to another book I have, so I have no idea which is correct. Must ask Sami.
Yvonne has very kindly lent me a keyboard, so now I have no excuse not to learn the piano :):) Have already found one internet tutorial that I'm starting to work through.
Now just need to make sure I get all the other things done I need to do like paying bills, writing letters to the parking police, some programming for Thorpie, rearranging my flat to fit in a filing cabinet, etc, and not waste all day playing ;)
The other thing I did tonight was spend ~3 hours talking to a couple of the other people on the body corporate. First one party, then a second. These are the two parties that were swearing at each other at the last meeting. So I went and talked to them individually just to see where they were coming from on a few issues, and I think we may be able to avoid a lot of gossiping and bitching just by having a meeting in a couple of weeks. A meeting of course will have its own problems, but at least everyone will have a chance to have their say.
I'll let you know how it goes :)
I bought a filing cabinet today. My current system of several expandable files was just not working. It was ok for the archives, but stuff I was adding was just overfilling some pockets, and they weren't stackable, and it was a disaster. So I bit the bullet and went out and bought a three draw filing cabinet. I expect to only fill a drawer and a half or so to begin with, but I got one with full sided drawers, so I could always use the third to put *stuff* in. But more likely I'll fill it with stuff that's currently in folders all around the place.
So I started to make some pretty colour coded lables for the folders, going through the expanding files and noting down the name of each pocket.
Now in case you don't know, I'm the sort of person that keeps *everything*. Especially if it's semi official. But tonight I threw something out.
My Austudy payment slips from when I was a student. Something piddly like $20 a fortnight for three months when I turned 18 til the end of year 12, then $275 a fortnight for three months from when turned 22 til the end of uni. Well we only have to keep financial records for 7 years, and it's been more than that, and I really don't have any sentimental attachment to them... hehe .. now if I could just do the same with the commonwealth bank account I had when I was a kid...
Tuesday night our air conditioner dies. 6am Wednesday morning I get in an open up the room to ventilate it. 8am Wednesday morning I get onto Discount Air who have the support contract to look after our air conditioner. 9:30am they come and have a look and decide it's a problem with the soft-start mechanism. They promise to fax Mitsubishi with a request to have it looked at. In the meantime we hire a small portable air conditioner from Kennards. This one keeps cutting out so they swap it for us. Heading into night two with no air-con, and the little one is only barely coping, but at least it's not getting ridiculously hot.
3pm *Thursday* some other company (not Discount Air and not even Mitsubishi) call me to say "we're coming Tuesday, is that ok?" Like, "*NO*! This is our server room, can't you come today??" So they say they'll come Friday at 7am. Night three of no air-con, but this time the building air conditioning stays on til 10pm and again the temperature doesn't get too out of control.
So 7am Friday (actually 7:30 by the time they get around to calling me because the building is locked at that hour), this fourth party outsource mob turn up. They bypass the "soft start" and so the unit gets power. The fans start up. But the compressor does not. So the dude says, well I can't fix it, I'll need to get a new compressor from Mitsubishi. How long will that take? Well I'll put a fax request through, it should be Tuesday or Wednesday - they don't have any spare compressors in stock in Sydney.
So how ridiculous a setup is this?? In an ideal world, if we have a problem with our air conditioner, we should be able to call up Mitsubishi and they can get a techie out, have the parts in the same city, and be able to fix it the same day. But no, we have to jump through hoops with two different *other* companies to get them to fix it, and with any luck it'll be fixed within a week. All credit to Discount Air for coming so quickly after we called them, but what's the point if they're not able to fix it? The whole business model of oursourcing has to be about the biggest disaster for customer service there is.
In the meantime, we hired (at our own expense because Mitsubishi doesn't cover it, even though our aircon is under warranty) a kick-ass portable aircon that's keeping the room as cool as the mounted one would.
A bit smaller :)

I never realised how much contact the outside of the middle knuckle of the the middle finger gets with the world. Until I scraped it while cleaning the office yesterday and have been knocking it on things ever since. ouch.
Spent a decent chunk of today stressing over the air conditioning, or lack thereof, in the server room. A part needs replacing, but of course they don't have any in stock, so we have to wait. So we hire a portable from Kennards, which only works intermittently. So they swap it. Then there's the problem of where to vent the air, when it's a sealed room with no access to the outside. It all becomes too much. 10 hour day today with no sign of letup tomorrow.
/me goes off to collapse into bed.
After spending far far too many hours at Eric Harshbarger's site in the past few days, I've decided to close that browser window and not go back to it for a while - it's entirely too addictive :)
Then something reminded me to check the server room temperature, which has been slightly elevated all day due to the air conditioning in the building being out. The temperature had gone up 10C since late this afternoon! argh. The air conditioner we have in that room must have carked it around then. Spent half an hour shutting down servers and talking to Jim about it. Have shut down all but the most critical ones, although the NT4 machines don't actually turn off the hardware when you shut them down remotely :( Fortunately we don't have many of them left.
Tomorrow looks like it will be fun.. not!
Owing to a chronic shortage of sleep, today was a grumply day. Fortunately there weren't too many disasters around the builidng from people not being able to login .. just a couple of minorish ones and one mystery one that we still haven't figured out.
Anyways, I'm off to bed to try and catch up.
It's hard to believe I started our active directory upgrade just a day and a half ago. It feels like about a week ago.
The upgrade went ok, although it could have been better. We had some wierd issues with dns that I didn't get in my test domain, so ended up having to put dns on the server we were upgrading rather than leaving it on the member server, and then move it across later. And DHCP stopped working when we upgraded the member server it was on, because it turns out you need to authorise dhcp servers in the domain. I didn't have dhcp setup in the test domain, because that would have just confused matters at the time. But at least that was an easy fix. We only had to go back to earlier ghosts once in the day, and managed to work our way around the other problems.
After work, went over to Chris' where a BBQ for his ex flat-mate's girlfriend was in full swing. Had some wine and relaxed for a few hours before getting home very late.
This morning in church, I burst into tears when someone killed a huntsman spider that was wandering around during the break. Sad I know to get that upset over a spider. I don't even *like* spiders.
This afternoon I wasted time drooling over lego and reading Eric Harshbarger's site some more. Didn't get any of the cleaning done that I needed to. Then George picked me up and we took the kids to the fair and went on plenty of rides. Well, they did, George and I mostly just watched. Although I did get lots of goes on the big slippery dip taking Rachel down, and got to drive a dodgem car. Haven't done that in years.
Then Sunday night dinner got moved to Luc and Lizzi's. Was feeling grumpy though, and I'm not sure why. I always seem to get grumpy when I go to their place for dinner.
Finally, almost time for bed. Just need to wash my hair and my lunch plate. blah.
btw, the Superman logo above is my first ever lego mosaic. I built it from sight off the logo on the DVD, so it's not exactly to scale. But I think it turned out fairly well. It's whet (sp?) my appetite for making more mosaics .. but need a *lot* of bricks if I'm going to do it properly!
1. What does it say in the signature line of your emails?
If I use mutt: :wq
If I use eudora: Blessed are the pessimists for they make backups
2. Did you have a senior quote in your high school yearbook? What was it? If you haven't graduated yet, what would you like your quote to be?
Can't remember, that was far too many years ago. Plus yearbooks are such an american thing.
3. If you had vanity plates on your car, what would they read? If you already have them, what do they say?
If money and availability were no object, probably "kazza" :)
4. Have you received any gifts with messages engraved upon them? What did the inscription say?
dunno, don't think so. Although I think I have a bracelet with my name on it from when I was a baby, and I have a favourite necklace with a K on it that I got for my 21st birthday
5. What would you like your epitaph to be?
Are we having fun yet?
Saw this on a billboard today - The Full Monty - with Paul Mercurio. Now *that* has to be worth seeing :)
I still haven't seen the Lion King either.. must call Aida.. someone remind me tomorrow..
So today I'm working some more on my active directory upgrades, when I realise the NT/98 clients won't connect to my test domain. Somewhere along the line of all the upgrades I did, everything stopped working. Rather than spending three years trying to figure out where it all went wrong, I went back to earlier ghost images, ready to start all over again. yay. Can you tell I was thrilled?
Did a water change on my big tank today also; it was actually rather pleasant getting all wet.. almost like going for a swim with just my arms :)
What one thing are you most looking forward to . . .
A good nights sleep
- ...over the next week?
Getting our domain upgraded to active directory successfully
- ...this year?
Going to the USA
- ...over the next five years?
Hopefully a trip to Europe
- ...for the rest of your life?
I've been watching the Superman movie series, and I would have to describe it as "silly". It starts getting silly 3/4 of the way through the first movie and just gets worse and worse. Although I never realised before what gorgeous blue eyes Christopher Reeve has .. mmm *drool* .. and that suit.. yummo.. lol ;)
Other than that a nothing day, the washing, the fish, the heat, the usual.
Watched dvds literally all day today. This is what you do when you have access to someone else's collection for a limited time :) That and building more bridges. I would have finished it, except I went out: went over to Striker's, where we watched The Matrix Reloaded, but I almost died of heatstroke, there is just no air there, so I came home after just the one video.
A couple of anniversaries I forgot to mention yesterday ..
It was ten years ago that the "January 94" bushfires swept through Como, destroying over 100 homes (a dozen of those being owned by people that we knew), my parents' church, and killing one person (three others were killed in other fires around the state). Seeing bushfire footage on tv still affects me deeply.
And on a lighter note, this blog is now one year old.. happy birthday blog :)
The smallest white angel laid a bunch of eggs yesterday. Although I was lucky to see them; when I came back five minutes later they were all gone and the other white angel was looking decidedly *fat*. Although I have no idea which fish actually ate the eggs; or indeed if she actually has a male partner or is just laying eggs and living in hope. Really must get this breeding tank up and running.
Spent the last two days literally *fighting* with windows. Yesterday it took me all day to get an nt4 machine upgraded to 2003. When I finally got it working though, the active directory wizard took about 2 minutes to run through.
Today was spent trying to figure out what the errors in the event viewer meant. The web was useless and the only stuff I managed to find didn't seem to be applicable to us. The silly thing is, everything seems to work, so not sure if the errors are that important to try and fix.
Today was so completely different to yesterday it was unbelievable. I could actually *think* and got a stack more work done. I'm full steam ahead planning our active directory upgrade. Panicking because I only have three days of James left before he disappears overseas for three weeks. If it all goes pear shaped we'll just have to go back to old ghost images of the servers.
Found a *very* cool program on Eric Harshbarger's site last night - Mazaika. It's a shareware program that lets you build photomosaics. I've been fiddling with it ever since. I'm trying to figure out which sorts of photos give the best results. It looks like pictures that don't have too much detail work the best. The pic is a section of the betta photo I uploaded the other night. I gave mazaika 11000 photos in my collection (although a decent chunk of those are thumbnails) to index, and am wearing my poor little puta out making mosaics.
Work today sucked. Someone didn't bother to turn the air conditioner on after the holidays, and the place sweltered all day (or at least the first half). Then I got home and it was even hotter, and I just about lost it. I need to be cooool dammit!!
Anyways.. I've uploaded some of the mazaika images I've done to conspiracy.
well you can, but you'd probably end up with a hangover :)
Today was another hot and sticky day, with minimal use on my puta because it would have just melted the fishies. As a consequence I got almost nothing done. Although I did tidy the flat almost to the point of respectfullness, and even did the vaccuuming!
Then a lovely night out with good wine and company. *smiles*
Last night was also fun; Pete (who I went to America with a few years ago) organised a night out with a bunch of people, which was great. James was completely in his element (a self-confessed people hater like me), and it was good to see him come to life for a change.
Now it's 9:35 and I just feel like sleeeeeping .. :)
Here's a pic of the betta I got yesterday, isn't he gorgeous? :)
The third tank is almost ready to go. I'm just thrashing the filters a bit - the water I put in there was old water from the other tanks, which will make transferring fish a bit easier cause the conditions should be more similar. But it was siphoned water, full of crap that sits in the gravel, so just running the filters over it. I'll clean the filters of all the crud, then run them again for another day or so and then I'll be able to add the two black angels to it. This tank doesn't have any gravel (so fry don't get lost) so all it has in it is a few clumps of moss for growing things like bacteria.
If I had one word to describe today (and yesterday for that matter), it would be "sticky".
Hot + Humid = Sticky
The pic is of the star at the top of the 3-storey Christmas Tree inside the Queen Victoria Building. Isn't it purty? Snapped it coming back from dinner - Kin Hoong was in town for the weekend and invited a bunch of old friends out for dinner. Tonight's outing had him, me, Nicola and Paul, and we went to The Little Snail in Darling Harbour, which was lovely, but definitely on the pricey side. $50/head for dinner is a little silly in my opinion.
I also got a new fish today - another betta. He's gorgeous, and I'll take some photos tomorrow. I inherited a big bowl when I got the last tank, and needed to put *something* in it :) I'm a bit worried about it getting cold in winter though. How do people heat their betta tanks in winter? I wonder.
Had a very nothing day today. Had absolutely no energy at all to get anything done. It could have been that I only got five hours sleep last night; it could have been the 100% humidity (at least that's what it felt like). At any rate, I didn't get a lot done, and it was too hot to even have my monitor on in this room, so left it off for big chunks of the day and read Firestarter and cleaned the flat.
Last night I went over to Luc and Cynthia's with a bunch of their friends and family and we watched both sets of fireworks from their balcony and Minority Report in between. Much beer and merriment to be had.
Thanks to everyone who left messages on my blog, and happy new year to you all too :)
