Thing in the whole world:Flying

Not a terribly imaginative title, you can blame Stu for that - I asked him for a title for this entry and that's what he came up with :)

So today began at 4:20 when I woke from a disturbing dream that Robin had gone skiing with Jim and John earlier in the year. I woke up thinking it could actually have been true and lost all enthusiasm to go to work early heh

So after a little bit of a sleepin, I wandered into work to cut up images for the frontpage of our website. The thing was, we decided to cmpletely redo the graphics on the front page of the site - on thursday last week. Final mockups were obtained at 4pm yesterday! So this morning it was a frantic rush to redesign the layout of the page and finalise a design we liked - a few executive decisions were made by us hackers on the final look, and while others stood around me desk we finished it.

So next I called comms as going live involved a dns change. So they did that at 1pm and suddenly six months of work came to life. It was all actually pretty exciting. Then a little over an hour later Stu's new website went live too, which I thought was pretty darned cool.

The afternoon was spent on general fixing things up and sorting out redirects and the like.

And then (after dinner with George) I got on a plane and flew a thousand kilometres to be with my boy :):). Terribly excited :) Being a night flight it was useless for photos, but I did record a several minute long movie of the lights of the Eastern Suburbs which just looked magical. Have I ever mentioned I *love* flying? The other nice part of the flight was the moon over the water near Brisbane and the actual landing with the Brisbane lights.

I brought up some plant from my tanks for Stu's new tank, which makes his tank look a whole lot nicer. We're going to go shopping for other bits and pieces while I'm here and maybe even some fish :)

But now it's tomorrow and finally time to sleep.

<posted from the BlackBerry>

I felt strangely at peace today. Of course a solid 8.5 hours of sleep helped immensely. But unusually I wasn't stressed about being late for work or adding 15 minutes to my trip by crossing to the other side of the road to get petrol (a trip which involves crossing the highway twice and three sets of traffic lights), or crazy people on the roads, or the impending deadline for our new website (which Peter is much more stressed over than anyone else). I felt vaguely like there is much more to life than day-to-day trivialities. That Stu is probably the only thing of any real importance in my life at the moment, the only thing worth worrying/caring about. I had all these ideas about some sort of profound blog entry about it all, but two sentences was about as good as I could get it, heh.

I did get moderately stressed out when I spent most of the day trying to get one thing done that should have taken an hour or two, but blew out to four or five after interruption after interruption after interruption. I was getting ready to disconnect my phone and shut down icq just to get some peace.

Spent the evening catching up on blogs, chatting to Arian and half watching reruns of CSI and will wander off in the general direction of bed shortly.

.. oh I forgot.. I also spent a couple of hours after work today flying up and down the coast on Google Earth, marking out points where I took photos out of the plane. And only did about half of them too :)

Childhood meme

I was tagged by Fiona ten days ago with this, and have only just now gotten around to doing it! (sorry!)

Name 5 things you miss about your childhood:

  1. Big family holidays. We did quite a few cool holidays when I was a kid. The four best were the "flying" holidays - America in 1983, Western Australia in 1984, Central Australia in 1985, Lord Howe and Norfolk Islands in 1987
  2. Good vision. When I was 12 I could read the smallest counter on the VCR from way across the other side of the room. My eyesight started deteriorating after that.
  3. Ability to sleep anywhere. I had no trouble sleeping on the plane to America in 1983. No such luck these days.
  4. Nicky Vasek. My best friend in year 7. Haven't seen her since 1986. She's sent me some emails after reading this blog, but has disappeared into obscurity again when I asked if we could meet up :(
  5. Bluey. My budgie for three years. The only one we had that actually talked.

Gosh, that was harder than I thought it would be. I realised there's not a whole lot from my childhood that I actually miss. Being extremelly shy and introverted I had few friends. There was no internet. I wasn't good at anything in particular, especially not anything that required coordination. I was good at school work, but nobody appreciated that except my parents (and my teachers I guess)

This meme was a tag your friends meme, but as I said in a previous post, I don't *do* that ;)

  1. I’m waiting:: patience
  2. Speak:: now
  3. Roger...:: Roger (Flying High)
  4. Knock knock:: who's there?
  5. Hybrid:: plant
  6. Can’t believe my eyes:: blink
  7. Hooked:: addicted
  8. Pontificate:: pope
  9. Slime:: ball
  10. Unwelcome:: visitor

So while looking up who Matt Tyler was, I found this awesome page on A Country Practice. Have been sitting here reading all the character bios, it's certainly bringing back memories.

Almost cried at this part regarding Molly Jones:

She died at home in May 1985 while Brendan and Chloe were flying a kite -- she was lying on a couch in the yard watching them when death claimed her and the last thing you saw and heard was Brendan running toward her and yelling before the picture faded to black

Even though it was something like twenty years ago and I was only 12 or so at the time, I remember that scene *vividly* :(

Flying High

Watching Airport 75 tonight (part of the Airport Terminal Pack). The beginning was cool - filmed at Dulles airport in DC (been there!! :) ). The whole first half of the movie I'm thinking "gee that's a lot like Flying High! (Airplane! in the US release).. the nuns singing on the guitar with the girl needing a transplant.. and since when did nuns travel so much, and then in first class ???? And then to have a hole ripped out of the cockpit and but a mere breeze blowing through it?? I went sky-diving once, and at probably half the speed the wind was unbelievable. The conditions in the cockpit should be similarly unbearable. But the technical specifics of actually flying a 747 are pretty cool. And there is some cool footage of a 747 flying through the Rocky Mountains. I've yet to come to the really silly part of transferring a person into the plane tho.. :)

Been having my fair-share of dopamine-releasing chemicals tonight.. with pizza in the toaster oven heating up for dinner.. yumm.. :)

FQ TOPIC: Funny

FQ1: What's something you find humorous, but probably shouldn't?
There are some movies that I laughed the entire way through but I'm sure they weren't meant to be that funny .. like the Poseidon Adventure, and Emma

FQ2: What's something that others find funny, but you don't?
There's Something About Mary would have to be the stupidest movie I have ever seen in my life. Everyone I went with were laughing like mad the whole way through it, but I was only mildly amused about twice in the entire thing.

FQ3: What actor/comedian/personality always makes you laugh? What movie? What book?
I remember seeing a travel doco by Clive James once, and I found his sense of humour rather appealed to me for some reason. I haven't seen anything of his since though. Movie? Probably Flying High (Airplane) is my favourite movie comedy. Book? I rarely laugh out loud when reading books.

FQ Stand-Up: Tell us a joke or funny story.
According to some study, the funniest joke in the world is:

A couple of New Jersey hunters are out in the woods when one of them falls to the ground. He doesn't seem to be breathing, his eyes are rolled back in his head. The other guy whips out his cell phone and calls the emergency services. He gasps to the operator: "My friend is dead! What can I do?" The operator, in a calm soothing voice, says: "Just take it easy. I can help. First, let's make sure he's dead." There is a silence, then a shot is heard. The guy's voice comes back on the line. He says: "OK, now what?"

Although I don't find it hugely funny. I remember reading something of Heinlein's once (I think it might have been Stranger in a Strange Land), and he made a rather interesting point about comedy that I've rarely found exception to - he essentially said that in order for something to be funny, someone (or I guess something) has to get hurt. When you think about it, that's very true. It's rare to laugh at something without someone/something else getting hurt in the process.

100 Things

100 things about Kazza the Blank One. Bren has had one of these for ages, and I've been thinking I should probably put one together. Just recently Dave and Dennis put theirs up, so I thought I would too. Some of my ideas were stolen shamelessly from them :)

I knew within a microsecond of the Theme Thursday topic coming out what photo I'd use for it, but it means plugging in the external hard drive and it's too late at night when I haven't washed up from dinner, so I'll put it up tomorrow.

Ok so it's not quite tomorrow, it's actually Sunday night. I actually chose a few more than just the photo I was thinking of, and could have in fact uploaded a stack more. But I restricted it to four. The first is the one I was originally thinking of, and I threw the others in for good measure.
