The Sound of Music

Watching my first ever Director's Commentary - of "The Sound of Music". It's quite interesting; a very cool movie too - one of those classics you just watch every time it's on TV - or I do anyway ;) I've actually been surprised how many details and little things and stuff happening in the background that you don't notice with all the sound/speech going. You can look at the other cast members that aren't normally in the spotlight or doing the talking and see what they're doing when the camera isn't directly on them. I should watch more movies without the sound more often!

Today was significantly better than yesterday. Helped along by finally getting a working DLT drive. Looks like it really was a terminator problem with the replacement drive *sigh* Plus it was Friday, which is always nice :)

Going to the exchange tonight to replace the faulty disk in gamera. It should either all go quite quickly and the array should rebuild itself, or the whole raid setup will crash and burn and I'll be reinstalling windows and recovering from backups late into the night. Next post you'll know one way or the other :)

Plans for my weekend

* buy some fishies - a few angels and a betta
* get a card/wrapping for present for my cousin's engagement present
* nuke my windoze installation and reinstall - I'm thoroughly sick of IE crashing all the time and taking all the other windows with it
* cousin's engagement party Saturday night
* SLEEEEEP!!!!

Installing Notes 6

We upgraded our Lotus Notes server today.

As much as I hate notes, I really love notes. You can just copy the directory it's in to another server, and it just runs, no questions asked. Yes that's right, you can run the server software after just copying the directory to another machine. How good is that?!

The plan was to move a notes installation to another server, fire it up to make sure it still worked (it did), then upgrade it from R5 to D6.

We locked ourselves out of the old machine though, because we needed to rename it, and doing this meant that domain accounts didn't work, and the administrator password we had also didn't work. We were planning to rebuild it anyway, but it was a bit scary knowing we wouldn't be able to go back to it if it all went pear shaped (at least not without reinstalling windows anyway). But as it turned out, it all went well and we now have a Notes 6 server.

Proliferating Plants

New plants
Very excited, got lots of new plants for my fish tank today. Three varieties of dicots, some big leafy thing, and a grass. Also got an air stone and air pump and some long prongy things to reach the bottom of the tank.

I'm a bit worried about the temperature in my room. Yesterday it hit 30 and stayed there all day. It was hotter outside than inside though, so even a big fan wasn't much use. Today is much more civilised. I have the fan blowing and all the windows in the unit open, but still the temperature is 28C. We'll have to see how the plants cope over the next couple of weeks. Might have to look at some sort of cooling unit if they aren't coping with the heat.

Now my next step is to let all these plants establish themselves and then I can start thinking about putting fish in :)
