Last year around this time, when I last dragged my Canada jumper out for the first time of the season, I wondered if I'd been in Canada that day two years previous, and I was. I did the same thing this morning. Two days earlier. This time three years ago we were staying in Canmore, and drove up and down the Icefields Parkway, seeing Banff National Park, Sulphur Mountain Gondola, Lake Louise and Moraine Lake. Travelblog entry here, and more photos here.

It was also three years ago I saw Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban on opening night.

Maybe I should have made this entry Boring Blogger Part IV ..? :)

People!

I use that term as an expletive. Organising people sux. Trying to pick a date for something when you don't know if you're going to have a job and trying to organise a good time of year to go to another country and then having to deal with the nonsense of when people can come "oh no I can't do it then" so I try for another date and "I can't do it then either" and then there's all the people that are likely to only want to come during school holidays, and the people that *can't* come during school holidays. It makes me want to just give up on the whole idea as a bad joke.

2006 Year in Review

Don't have a whole lot of energy for this tonight. But I left it so long last year that MT couldn't figure out how to place the entry, and it only ended up being viewable in the day-to-day links, and not in the monthly archives. So I'm just going to do it a bit quickly.

Did quite a lot of travelling this year, although only locally. Several trips to Queensland, including spending a nice first week of the year there. Much time spent with Chay and David, singing badly but eating well :) Got to visit them for a couple of days at the end of the year too which was nice. Also many visits to Canberra (more on that later), including taking hundreds of photos at Floriade. Another nice little trip was down to Batemans Bay and Mogo Zoo.

At work we moved offices again. I got *squished* in the seating arrangements, but several fish tanks and many guppies helped keep my sanity. Got a new Blackberry 8700 to play with, which I'm very attached to - although more for Poker and Solitaire than anything else I think heh. The main file server threw a disk in March which corrupted the file system *again* and once too often, so we decided then and there to replace the machine. Also spent time playing with windows firewall on all my servers, and locking down the vlan to block most incoming stuff. Towards the end of the year they (oh sorry, there is no "us" and "them" anymore - we've all been assimilated) centralised us in order to cut costs. My boss got seconded into the whole change process, Luc became my boss, and we all ended up with extra crap to deal with. There will be a round of redundancies next year, although noone knows when yet, and I'm hoping to get one and jump ship and go be with my boy. But the whole process and change has left me completely *dreading* going to work at the moment. Which is a shame, because it really is (was?) a wonderful job/place to work. We had a "wake" the Friday after we found out - to celebrate what once was, and the end of an era.

On the fish front, tried twice to breed blue guppies, but both lots died as soon as I got them. One lot in an established tank, the other lot in a fresh tank setup. So no idea what was going on with them there. My big girl angel is my only remaining original survivor, after the death of the other black angel and the three glass catfish. She keeps laying eggs which is kinda sad. Setup a way cool Macquarium at work. Yes, an aquarium in an old macintosh case. It's way way cool. Put three guppies and a betta in there and they've been doing splendidly. Guppies at work (and at home) continue to go nuts. A "fun" morning at work a few weeks ago when the girl in the Macquarium had her babies and the betta at them all heh. At home, got a bunch of glowlight and black neon tetras. The black neons have been doing well, but the glowlights not so well. The plants in that tank are going nuts though. Stu gave me some of his baby multies, which have gotten big enough in the last couple of weeks to start excavating the gravel around their shells. And finally, one of my favourite fish was found murdered on the floor after I accidently left the lids off one night. I was really sad cause he was such a wonderful little fish.

Didn't do much with Lego this year. Just got a lot of it put away that was dusting up my surfaces. And then built all my Harry Potter Lego, photographed it, and put it all away again. After the holidays will try and sell a bunch of it on ebay, so as less to move to Canberra.

Been mostly healthy this year. The usual colds/flus and a few days off work. Flat feet and crap quality shoes caused me some problems, which went away after wearing better shoes. Also dug out my old scales, and (assuming they're accurate), seem to have lost a couple of kilos in the past couple of months. Will be weighing myself a bit more regularly and try and get it down a bit.

Other bits and pieces:

* me little brother got married and I got a neato SIL. Very happy for them
* finished reading the Bible again (in three years read the whole Old Testament once, and the New Testament three times). Longest and most consistently that I've done that *ever*
* several poker nights at work and at cia. Lost all the cia ones, but came first, second and third in work ones.
* been slowly getting FLYwashed and slowly starting to get the hang of things, and having things like a clean bathroom all the time, which is completely foreign to me!
* bought a Netphone for Stu and me, but Stu's has been sitting uselessly in a box because he hasn't been able to get broadband where he is, so that was a complete waste of money. We'll likely be living together before he gets adsl.
* read The Half-Blood Prince again over Easter. Other than that, continued reading Cordelia's Honour which I'm *still* struggling to get through.
* saw a couple of free movies courtesy of IBM and Dell - The Da Vinci Code and Pirates of the Caribbean 2.
* rearranged the furniture/tv in my flat
* finished indexing my USA photos, after 2 1/2 years.
* watched all bar one episode of the first three seasons of TNG
* walked on a piece of glass 300m directly above Sydney traffic on the Sydney Tower Skywalk

And finally.. Stu got a job in Canberra and moved down there at the end of April. Made seeing each other a heck of a lot easier, but the drive is starting to get tiring. Hopefully we won't have to do it for too much longer. Although the prospect of changing jobs is a scary one for me.. Things with Stu have been going wonderfully, and on Christmas Eve (well technically Christmas Day), we got engaged. No wedding date set yet. We'll deal with that next year.. oh wait... it *is* next year... hehe :)

Gosh, well that was a lot longer than expected. Ooops. :)

Festive Meme

Stolen from Neil

  1. Egg Nog or Hot Chocolate? mmm egg nog. Only ever had it twice, but I remember it being quite yummy, and somewhat potent :)
  2. Does Santa wrap presents or just sit them under the tree? I often just sit presents under the tree for a while because they look more interesting before they're wrapped. Then at some point the inbound ones get put away and the outbound ones get wrapped.
  3. Coloured lights or white on tree/house? Coloured. I'm a firm believer in the addage "you can never have too many fairy lights"
  4. Do you hang mistletoe? No
  5. When do you put your decorations up? The fairy lights in my study I often put up early November and they stay up til about February. The tree goes up at the beginning of December, usually the first weekend
  6. What is your favorite holiday dish (excluding dessert)? Roast pork with gravy, apple sauce and *crackling*
  7. Favourite holiday memory as a child? Favourite? Dunno.. Probably putting up the tree and lights each year
  8. When and how did you learn the truth about Santa? Don't rememeber
  9. Do you open a gift on Christmas Eve? No
  10. How do you decorate your Christmas Tree? Lots of bright shiny coloured things :)
  11. Snow, love it or dread it? I love snow. But then I've never had to live with it. And white Christmases here? I think they had one in Hobart one year .. :)
  12. Do you know how to ice skate? Yup, it's fun. Never gone skating on a real lake though
  13. Do you remember your favourite gift? Sheesh, hard questions ;) Our bikes one year were pretty cool. And getting my own double tape deck/radio when I was about 16 was cool too.
  14. Whats the most important thing about the holidays for you? Being with family I suppose. Christmas is for family, New Years is for friends. I got pretty depressed for several years when I had no friends to celebrate New Years with
  15. What is your favorite holiday dessert? I like baked fruit pies - things like apricot or blueberry danishes and the like
  16. What is your favourite holiday tradition? Dunno about favourite, but one I've enjoyed over many years, is watching the Carols by Candlelight on Christmas eve. The most memorable of those was the year I'd been swimming for a week straight with plaited hair and no brushing it in between. We watched the carols for *hours* while my parents painstakingly removed all the knots out of my hair
  17. What tops your tree? A 15-fairy light electric star - way cool :)
  18. Which do you prefer giving or receiving? Well I'm pretty crap at both. I'm crap at thinking up what to get people, and I'm impossible to buy for too.
  19. Favourite Christmas Song? Probably Hark the Herald Angels Sing. Or Angels we have Heard on High (the tune - I don't even know the words!). Or Handel's Hallelujah chorus.
  20. Favourite flavour of Candy Canes? Mint. Anything else seems wrong somehow.

As mentioned earlier tonight, I've been rather enjoying the 20 to 1 series on Channel 9. Tonight's countdown was Australian Movies.

Timeshare

So went to a time share presentation tonight. Seems that Luke gave them my details the other week. When they called they said they'd give me a 1-4 night stay at one of their hotels in exchange for coming along to hear what they had to say. So I thought I had nothing to lose, so I went along.

Well it was interesting. I'd never had time share explained to me properly before, so really had no idea what it was all about. I can certainly see its benefits. You could certainly save a lot of money on good accommodation, especially overseas, although local is also very good (free in fact, conditions apply heh). The problem is that you're kinda locked into staying at one place. Which is not how I travel. When I travel, I like to stay at relatively cheap places, and use where I stay as merely somewhere to sleep, and only stay for a short time, maybe one or two nights, before going to the next place. The sort of thing you get on timeshare holidays are resort-style accommodation where you stay there and do activities there. So I don't know that I'd get a whole lot of benefit out of it.

The other gotchas include yearly strata fees. Which are $300-$600 per year depending on your package. Which kinda cancels out a lot of the benefit you'd get.

It actually was cheaper than I thought it would be. But I was not prepared to say yes to their offer. More on principle than anything else. I really really hate those offers that you have to sign up on the night right then and there to get the benefits. If you don't have the time to go off and think about it and read their documentation, then really I think you're acting a little foolishly. Of course they get a little bit rude with you after you say no. And then try and give you other options - oh you can have six months to pay the deposit, or you can "rent" points, or you can go away on a little holiday, and if you decide to join after then you get the cost of the holiday off the membership. And they question you why you don't want to do it and don't you think it's a good offer, and by this time you've been there two hours and your parking is up and you just want to get out of there. So I did, with voucher for free accommodation as promised in hand :)

I need to win a few million dollars so I don't have to work again and be on holidays permanently. It really is the best way to be :)

Slept till I felt like getting up. Pottered. Looked at photos of Stu as a kid. Went food shopping with Stu. Worked on a jigsaw. Worked on my longstitch. Watched a couple of episodes of Firefly. Started reading through this years blog entries for a wrap-up entry. Had a yummy dinner of steak (that I cooked) and salad (that Stu made). Watched a couple of episodes of Star Trek. Went for a walk on the bay at Sandgate.

Now it's 10pm (here) and I feel like I've had quite a good day.

Cool really.

Slacker!

I swear I'm such a slacker. Go on holidays and the blogging just stops heh :)

Wednesday went down to RI with Dave and Yvonne which was partly very pleasant (the swimming and communing with nature and seeing goannas and kangaroos and snakes and the like) and partly just awful (feral flies, feral kids, insane heat). Oh and being off the internet for 24 hours wasn't pleasant either ;)

Thursday we came back to my place and just collapsed for a while. Got to wash my hair properly which was priority number one heh. Took Stu to the fish shop to look at the cichlids, then got some pizza for dinner - pepperoni yummmmm! Then tried to get myself organised, but it was dark and I was tired (my excuse).

So Friday morning finished getting organised, but it was a slow process working through a massive todo list, when I hadn't been home for five days.

Eventually got away, had lunch at the twin servos north of Gosford, then dropped in on Stu's grandmother in Newcastle. Then a final push north and got to Armidale after 8pm.

Called up Arian and family, who came over for dinner (mmmm more pepperoni pizza :) ). It was cool to finally meet them all. Arian looked exactly like the pictures I'd seen of her heh :)

Then this morning went and visited my cousins and their families. Theo who has just turned two has the most amazing language skills. He talks in complete sentences, and knows hundreds if not thousands of words. Quite phenomenal.

Currently chilling out back at the motel. Wondering how I'm going to do my yearly wrapup. Might have to do it from Stu's place and change the date :)
