Day 11 - Wednesday 19 December - Transatlantic Crossing Day 4

3am wakeup urgghhh. This insomnia is killing me. Having too soft a bed and too hot a doona is certainly not helping matters :(

Got up eventually and wandered around mostly on deck 3.

At 7:30 the laundrette opened and I got a load of washing going. One out of the three washer/dryers is out of action which is a bit annoying. Fiddled around, put on the drying, and then we went to breakfast.

After breakfast came back to check on the drying but the machine had stopped about ten or twenty minutes in. Tried getting it going again but it kept stopping and not heating up on the regular cycle, so tried another one and that worked ok.

Midmorning by now and hadn't seen the sweetie since breakfast, and couldn't find him either.

Had a quick look in at the Christmas markets in the Queens room but there were too many people and I didn't have much time anyway. I thought I'd go back a bit later (but I never did).

At 10:30 I went to a cooking demo put on by the chefs in the Verandah restaurant. They've changed their theme recently to steakhouse, and it made it all look very enticing :)

Still couldn't find the sweetie. Came back to the room and blogged, then went out again, and happened to see him coming down the corridor.

Oh yeah, my new phone won't work on the ship's mobile network. No idea why, it just can't pick up the carrier. I fired up my old phone in the end, and that works ok.

Had lunch in Kings Court (venison and pork cordon bleu which were quite nice, and some vichy carrots, which had an orange sauce which was very nice). Getting a bit sick of Kings Court. I think I'm trying to try too many things. Need to keep things a bit simpler.

At 14:00 we met up for the Behind the Scenes Tour!!! It was pretty awesome, visiting the Bridge (saw the location of the Titanic, and the bridge webcam (a big Sony camera)), walked past crew quarters, the mooring deck (they were doing repairs on doors damaged in the rough weather we had the other day), the anchor deck (I would love to have seen the room where they pile up the chain), then down to "Burma Road" on Deck 1, and saw a bunch of stuff along there (door to the crew's pub the Pig and Whistle, the baggage handling room, some of the waste processing rooms, one of the firefighting lockers, the Engine Control Room, and walked into one of the freezers (one for meat) and a meat processing room). Then we headed up to the Britannia Galley and saw a bit of that (not as much as the last galley tour I did, but had more detail about what was what). Had a brief break with champagne and nibbles, then saw backstage of the Royal Court Theatre. I would love to have seen the engine room, but probably too cramped and noisy to take people (I've stood next to an XPT engine at idle and *that* was loud enough. They gave us a pin, and the galley gave us a chefs had and apron which is pretty cool. I'll write up a longer review at some point (I took four pages of notes in my Field Notes book!).

We were pretty tired after the tour (three hours of standing or walking slowly), but we had tickets for the 17:30 planetarium show - Wildest Weather in the Solar System, narrated by Michael Trucco, so went along to that.

We didn't have the energy to get dressed up for dinner (well some of us didn't haha) so got a beer in the pub then had Kings Court for dinner (I kept it simple with just beef stroganoff).

I did over 12000 steps yesterday.. craziness. Collapsed into bed a bit after 20:00.
