Tonight I went along for a drink after work for pdif's farewell, but then got a better offer - drinks with the sweetie and some colleagues at the Wig & Pen.  Except the Wig&Pen was full, so we went across to PJ O'Reilly's.  There was only five others - a guy from Stu's work who was originally from China, and his Japanese girlfriend, a Japanese guy there on a work exchange trip, and a lady and her American partner.  So a lot of talk about travel, a couple of beers, and a very pleasant after work outing.

We stopped in at the Dumpling Inn for dinner - shredded beef Peking style and ginger fish.

So had Chris and Geoff from the club over for dinner tonight.

The sweetie cooked a lovely bolognase and then we had a dip in the pool and then dessert and chatted about travel and life and church and other such things.

A lovely evening :)

2012 Year in Review

So 2012.

The year started with us in Sydney with Stu's friend Kore who was visiting from the USA.  We saw the Sydney fireworks on New Year's Eve, then came home.  Went to River Island with her and D&Y and had another week off just hanging around Canberra.

This year saw us have our biggest ever trips away from home.  Stu had decided to take some long service leave and spent three months in Japan - two and a bit of those studying Japanese, and some travel at the end.  So when the parents said they were going to the Middle East I decided I would go too.  I spent two weeks with them on a tour round Israel and Jordan, then we appended that with ten days in Egypt.  I still had a couple of weeks to fill in before I was planning to meet up with Stu, so took myself off to London and then wandered across the top of Europe from Paris to Copenhagen via Brussels, Amsterdam, The Hague, Rotterdam, Hamburg and Billund.  Finally I flew across to Japan and after a couple of days around Osaka had some time in Hokkaido.  It was an epic trip and I saw some amazing stuff!  I was quite nervous in the lead up to the trip that I'd get sick or something would happen and it would all fall apart.  But fortunately nothing went wrong.  In fact probably the only "disaster" of the whole trip was an airline going out of business while I was on my trip, costing me several hours out of my day in Copenhagen because I had to bus/train it there from Billund instead of fly.

In other travel news, we went to Dave's coast house in July and December, and visited Chay and David in Queensland in August.  Finished off December with Boxing Day in Sydney, then a couple of days in the Hunter Valley.

I got my UK trip photos blogged - finishing up two years after the trip.

At work I came to the realisation that I like doing documentation.  Tragic I know ;)  As always a pretty busy year, although things did let up a bit for me after the trip, as we had several new people getting up to speed so we were able to spread the workload out a bit.  So the latter part of the year gave me some time to do my other favourite thing - tidying!  The year finished with a massive downer though, with one of our team members refusing to do oncall anymore and thereby increasing the work load for the rest of us.  It's been causing me all sorts of stress/anxiety :(

Otherwise my health had a pretty good year, just a couple of short colds (got a flu vaccination which possibly helped).

We had a very social year this year, visiting, being visited and going out with lots of people.  There were several games nights at Mishi's in February, March, April and July, although somehow Stu never managed to meet Lana.  From Stu's work, we saw Josh and Ally a few times, Gaelian and Stephanie, Tristan, and Kirily.  From my work there were a few bbqs at Chris', a Japanese feast at Doc's, a couple of dinners with Tony and Heather (that Stu missed for one reason or another) and some movie/singstar nights with a big group in January and October, and one with just Doc.  Nat and Andrew came over a few times, including a hanami party.  We saw Damien and Amanda a few times - for a birthday lunch (that Stu missed because he was in Japan), a Christmas dinner party, and a war games day.  There were meetups with internet friends - we went out with Fiona and Chrispycon a few times, and Stu's friend Gene came to visit.  From Sydney, we had beer with Luc, had the parents come down to stay for a weekend, although Stu wasn't feeling very well so we didn't spend much time with them, and Peter came to stay with us for a month while on a short term contract.  Hao also came for a conference and we had a good catchup.  David came to stay a few times, and Yvonne came once as well.  All of that socialising meant we didn't have DC over as often, so the Buffy and Angel watching suffered somewhat.

With the fish, a fairly quiet year.  We let the numbers dwindle down before we went away, as we wanted to minimise the number of tanks for Doc to have to look after while we were away.  While we were away my last remaining original fish died - my ten year old angel.  I gave that tank a thorough cleaning and got some danios for it.  I also got five baby angels, but all but one of them died within a week :(  So at the moment there's the "angel" tank with danios and an angel, the two foot with a couple of guppies and the remaining black neon tetras, and maybe a catfish or three we got from Chay and David, the four foot with duboisi, multis, a leleupi and a j.transcriptus (the big catfish died Christmas eve) and the "krib" tank downstairs with the three remaining kribs and a golden panchax killifish.

Not much happened on the Lego front this year (apart from visiting *two* Legolands on my holiday).  Neil and I went to the annual Brick Expo, this time getting tickets to the VIP dinner.  That was a lot of fun, and got to see all the Lego displays without crowds.

I've been doing a lot of jigsaws recently, and I did the second section of the 24000 piece one.

New toys I bought this year included a new computer (the previous one was five years old) and an iPhone 5 (Optus data is worse on it than the 3GS but otherwise it's a pretty cool phone).  Had many long hours of stress fighting with iTunes - moving to a new computer, getting the iOS updated on the old phone and moving to the new phone).  I also stockpiled some Buckyballs before they were banned for sale in Australia and got the London Olympics for the wii (not as good as the original).  For the house we bought a purple "comfy" chair for Stu for the study, a new lounge suite and a buffet to match the dining table, and a new printer.

We're still eating out quite a lot, and I've become one of those annoying food photographers.  Our favourites are still Black Pepper for weekend brunches, and the Dumpling Inn.  Other places we went to this year included Sammy's, Gus', Happy's, Alice's, Ardeche (ourselves and for Noah's birthday), Mork's (with Tony, Heather and Jess, and also with Damien and Amanda), Café Essen, Asia Café, Bella Vista (don't get there as often as we'd like, but did go with work and James and George and the kids), Ginger and Spice (for Annie's birthday), As Nature Intended, Kimchi and Zierholz Fyshwick.  With work people there were also visits to Zierholz UC, Samiuz, Bolly Buds, 2 Yummy, Guzman Y Gomez, Chong Co and Mad Mex.  We also got into a semi-regular habit of going for drinks after work on a Friday, at such places as Ha Ha Bar, The Lighthouse and the Labor Club.

I didn't do as much dessert creating this year, but did attempt a blueberry cheesecake, chocolate oranges, and a pretty spectacular layered cherry pavlova (twice!).  Also made hollandaise sauce for the first time.

Down

Not a good day. Week really.  Nonsense that started Monday continued today.  Fortunately nothing I've done, which is always nice.  Until they find something.  Which they probably will.

Saddened this afternoon to hear about the death of a guy at work from cancer.  Even though I barely knew him - I think I'd talked to him all of twice and played with his iPad once.

Two years ago today we travelled from Bangor in Wales to Salisbury in England.  This was a much better day, starting at Llanfair in the rain, seeing the super cool Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, Iron Bridge, and Gloucester Cathedral.  This was one of the more beautiful cathedrals we went to, and of course featured heavily in the first two Harry Potter movies.

IPv6

Went to an IPv6 "training" day today.  Well not so much training.  Sort of a seminar.  Not sure what to make of it.  Was good to be reminded of lots of things though.  And funny that in the year since the last time I did some IPv6 training, attitudes to things like DHCP have changed.  But not to NAT, which is still considered evil.

The worst part was sitting in quite uncomfortable chairs for the entire day.  After lunch my legs made things pretty miserable.

And apart from two APNIC staff, there was only one other female in the room.  hrmmm.

Two years ago today, the sweetie and I travelled from Lockerbie, through the Lakes District of England and finished up in Wales.  It rained.
So I had something like 438 mails in my inbox this morning.  Which got cut very quickly down to 148 when I removed all the mailing list and auto notification type mails.  So didn't take me all that long to get through it all which was nice.  Was kept busy most of the day anyway, without me even needing to look at my pre-trip todo list.

After work I met up with Luc at the Wig & Pen (which hasn't moved yet! win!).  Luc was won over by the nice beers they have there, and gave it his stamp of approval :)  I had a "Lunch with the Monks" and a "Big Ass Barley Wine".  Luc also had a Lunch with the Monks and a Dubble Trubble.  Stu arrived and had an Obama IPA.  We pretty much just talked about travel and Japan.  Was a fun night.

After Luc left for his dinner meetup, the sweetie and I went to the Asia Cafe for dinner.  We had soft shelled crab (nice, but something super spicy in the salad mix burnt my tongue - a lot!  Hurt for ages.  And no it wasn't a piece of the red chili - that's easy to avoid - perhaps some seeds that had come loose).  Also had some Honey Mustard Steak which was very yummy.

I'm getting old.

My idea of a perfect weekend is to not leave the house at all.

I've been feeling pretty anxious/depressed the past couple of days because I have to go back to work.  And not because I hate work.  Actually work is pretty good, except for when there's so much to do that I can't keep up which is a lot of the time but moving on ...

No it's because when I have to go to work I can't be at home.  I'd be perfectly happy spending all day every day at home.  Like during my uni holidays.  It's been, what, sixteen? seventeen? years since I had a three month holiday and I STILL MISS THEM!!!  Oh they were bliss.  To get up every morning for months on end and be able to do whatever you liked every day!  It was magic!

Sadly, if I want money to be able to travel I have to go to work.  But that doesn't make it any easier.

I'd still rather be at home.

Just sayin'.

Felt like I didn't do much today (because I didn't tick much off the todo list) but I suppose I did a reasonable amount.  And the sweetie cooked dinner and we spent some time together which was nice so we're thinking maybe that should be more of a regular Sunday night thing heh.
Inspired by Luc's post, I thought I'd document what tech stuff I took away with me this trip.

So here's everything tech-related that I took away with me, including all baggies.

Travelling Tech
Cameras
Three cameras - my Canon 500D, the Sony TX10 "Random Camera", and a Sony handicam.  I used the video camera a reasonable amount in the middle east, but not so much after I got to Europe.

Phone
My old iPhone 3GS.  I didn't upgrade before I went away because if anything happened to it I'd have been very sad.  If anything happened to the old one well then I could just get a new one when I got home.

Laptop
The Asus EeePC.  Very cute, but not as cute as an ultrabook ;)  Maybe next laptop ;)  After two months of typing on that laptop and using its screen, it's very weird to come home to my super huge monitor and chunky keyboard and mouse!

GPS
Photomate 887 Lite.  This is seriously the coolest device *ever*.  It recorded almost my entire trip, except for between Hamburg and Kolding.  I've yet to add up how far I actually travelled.

Backups
Multiple USB memory sticks.  Sadly the 64gb one Stu got me for Christmas died, so I had to replace it with several 16gb sticks along the way.  I didn't get the whole trip onto them, but did a backup of missing stuff to Stu's computer when I got to Japan so I could have a non-platter backup.  Also a 320gb usb-powered external hard drive. One cable, very small and light, great for travelling with.

Power Converters/Adapters
One for the UK and one for Europe (also the middle east).  I lost the European one somewhere between Cairo and Paris, so had to go buy a new one.  Also an Australian double adapter so I could charge other things at the same time as using the laptop.  Stu took a Japanese adapter to Japan, so I used that when I got there.

Other Charging Stuff
The "brick" for my iPhone, the battery charger for the Canon and the charger for the video camera (which had a long cable).  As well as the charger for the laptop.

Cables
I got a super cool tiny little iPhone cable which I used to charge the phone off the laptop (and transfer photos).  It's 10cm long - great for travelling!  A ~30cm figure eight cable, also a good short length.  The cable for random camera.  HATE Sony and their proprietary cables >:(  Why can't they use mini or micro usb???  A mini usb cable used to charge the GPS.  It's fairly long, I could have taken a super short one, but I'm used to carrying that one with me everywhere, as it lives in the camera bag.

Other
A small mouse, my jetstar in-ear headphones that work on planes as well as regular devices, and a 12V usb double adapter.  Couldn't get the adapter to work in the hire car we had, don't know why.  Didn't need it though as the GPS was built into the car and there was an iPod dock in the glove box (and I wasn't running the GPS on my phone this time as I had the Photomate).

So this is what it all looked like packed up.

Travelling Tech

Where was I?

If you're a lurker you may not have known that for the past two months I've been travelling around Israel, Jordan, Egypt, UK, Europe and Japan.  Actually you might have had some idea from all the beer of the day photos I posted ;)

There's no photos yet, but the text is all up at http://kazza.id.au/eurasia_2012/

Hoping to return to regularly scheduled programming from now..

Carousel

Friday night I got stuck at work til nearly 8pm, so the sweetie came and picked me up and we got takeaway from the Dumpling Inn.

Saturday was mostly just house cleaning.  Kirili came over for beer and pizza and check out what she brought me!  (she must have heard about how I was drooling all over the one she has on her desk at work that I saw last time I visited Stu there).

Lego Carousel
We talked a lot about travel (she's only like 25, but has spent months and months travelling the world on various trips - way cool!), had a super yummy pizza from Crust, and just watched some tv.

Today was mostly trip planning.  Roasted some veggies for dinner, including some stuff from Kath's farm.
