So we went into town yesterday to have brunch, get Stu a haircut, buy me some replacement ratchet straps for my roller blades.

And we accidently bought ourselves new toys.

That is to say, we had intended to get Stu a video camera.  I hadn't quite intended to buy a camera for myself.  That is, I'd been thinking about it, but hadn't fully decided what to get.  So it wasn't as fully researched as I'd have liked it to have been.

So the new toy.  A Canon 500D with an 18-135mm lens (28-200mm equivalent) - which is pretty much what I had with the Sony.  The idea of having to continually change lenses while travelling still puts me right off - one of the big reasons I went with the Sony last time.  So this lens is a decent compromise.

If anything the focus is a little soft, but still possibly clearer than the Sony.  Certainly the colours are better and less chromatic aberration.  I gave it a bit of a workout today at the Lego Brick Expo at Woden.  Generally did fairly well.

One disadvantage of using a real viewfinder is that it doesn't give you a guestimate of the exposure.  With the Sony you could get a pretty good idea of how the photo would turn out even before you took it.  No such luxury with the Canon (except maybe with the live view thingie).. gonna be a bit of trial and error methinks.

The image stablising is pretty nifty though and seems to work fairly well.

So this is the fifth real camera I have owned.

My first was a Ricoh film camera I got for Christmas in 1991.  It was a great little camera and took quite decent pictures.  Unfortunately it was stolen along with my bag in 1996, along with half a roll of undeveloped film that included such events as my birthday outing to Phantom of the Opera.

My second camera was a Hyundai.  Yes I know.  I was in an altered mental state the day I bought it, having been told off by someone previously.  So I wasn't thinking clearly and was sucked in by the sales guy on the day.  Stoopid stoopid stoopid.  This camera was very average, but I used it up until I got my first digital camera.  Pretty sure the first photo on it was of my brand new second hand (and first) car.  Ended up giving it away on Freecycle some years ago.

My third camera was my first digital camera - an Olympus C-900 zoom.  My Uncle Graham bought it for me in Singapore for ~$1500.  This was a fantastic camera.  1.3 megapix, 3x optical zoom.  I used it for five years and was totally happy with it.  The main problem with it was not having any control over exposure settings, so it didn't do well with the colouring in sunsets etc.  Loved this camera, still have it stored away.

My fourth camera was my Sony DSC-F828.  OK I really *really* loved this camera.  ~58500 photos taken on it.  Three overseas holidays.  8 megapix, which was ahead of its time (I got it in 2004 and it was several years before 8mp camera became the norm).  One of the best features of this camera was its ability to bend the camera body, which made taking photos from waist height, and over the head, extremelly easy.  I am going to miss that sorely.  Really the only reason I'm upgrading at all is for better photos in low light.

Technically "random camera" is Stu's camera.  I bought it for him for Christmas in 2005.  It's also a great little camera, that's pretty easy to hold onto and take photos of "random" stuff when just walking around - it was used in Japan a lot this way.

Not sure if the iPhone counts as a camera, but I do take quite a lot of photos on it (it somehow seems more socially acceptable to pull out a phone than a thumping big black camera).

And finally the 500D.  Still only about a third of the way through reading the manual.  Still have a lot to figure out how it actually works and how I can get the best results out of it....

Holidays

Two years ago today we had a little bit of an explore of Heidelberg before heading back to Frankfurt and spending two days flying home.  Would have been nice to spend a bit more time in Heidelberg as we didn't get to explore the castle at all.

Overall the honeymoon was pretty darned good.  I just wish I'd planned it better.  Because I spent so long planning the wedding, I hardly did any honeymoon planning at all.  We basically chose what cities we'd be going to and for how long, the first two places accommodation, and that was it.  We did most of our planning once we arrived in places, and booked the next accommodation from the previous place.  So there were things we missed because we just didn't know about them.  And some bad weather in the alps didn't help much either heh.

A bit over a month ago I noticed the last entry of the honeymoon blog that said:

Hopefully it won't take two years to do like my USA photos did... ;)

Yeah.  So I'm actually a long way behind even that, because all I managed to do was pick photos for the blog.  Nothing has been labelled or geotagged.  Oops.

Anyways.

See the entire honeymoon blog on one page (temporarily anyway).

So it seems fitting that two years after the last day of our honeymoon, I booked our next holiday!!  To Japan and the UK later this year :)
http://xkcd.com/657/  - I sooo want to print this out poster sized
http://www.toiletmap.gov.au/Default.aspx - every country should have one of these!!
http://shop.lego.com/HolidayShop/festivefun.aspx - inspired me to dig out some Lego on the weekend

Day went very quickly today.  Not sure why.  Maybe cause was "playing" with some more fun stuff rather than having to deal with too much crap.

Went for a walk with the sweetie tonight and did some gardening and trivia night research.  So pretty successful day really.

Sorting

Further to my pondering about photo management, I was thinking I could maybe use Picasa locally to manage some of my more "miscellaneous" photos.  I already have directories for "big" things, like holidays, weddings, various work photos etc.  So I thought I'd expand on that a bit and do some broad categorisation of photos that are a bit more specific.  And then what's leftover could be labelled/tagged/albumified/whatever.

So to that end I started going through my monthly directories of photos pulling out various bits and pieces.

While watching the last episode of season one of Monty Python.  Only three to go :)  (and later watched the pilot of Fringe - surprisingly with no ads!)

Picasa 3: Fail

So I thought last night I'd give Picasa another go.  I'd previously downloaded Picasa 2 and hated it, but hoped 3 might be better.

Not so much.

The primary reason for using it would be not only managing my ridiculous number of photos (approaching 100k), but geotagging and sharing holiday photos.

Well the first road block is a total lack of ability to create subfolders.  There's a deal-breaker right there.  Doing holidays in a flat-file structure like that would be utterly ridiculous.  It's pretty clunky as a management interface for photos, I didn't find it all that user-friendly.  Altho the geotagging worked quite nicely with Google Earth.

The amount of online storage for a free account is also pretty small - only a gigabyte.  The Europe photos that I wanted to upload are 140mb.  So that's 14% gone on one trip.

So I think I'll be sticking with conspiracy for now (2gb used there :) ).
(For anyone that's interested, I did find a good comparison of Picasa web folders vs Flickr)

Mortgage

Finally updated my spreadsheets for the last couple of months of my Sydney loan tonight.

In the seven and a half years I had the mortgage I paid $78k in interest, and interest rates went up 17 times from 2002 to 2008.  They started to go down again right at the end - just in time for our new mortgage heh.  My old mortgage had a higher than average interest rate, but there were no fees, no charges on using any atm, no charges on withdrawing cash from the credit card account, and elegant simplicity with the way the interest and credit card worked.  Their internet banking (or lack thereof) sucked donkey balls though, and the only improvement in the eight years was to allow Bpay.  The interface never changed and I was never able to transfer money to other accounts.  I was with Homeloans Ltd with finance from ING if anyone cares :)

The charts looked pretty cool, with dips and peaks where things like small loans to/from relatives, holidays, termination payouts etc took their toll.

And the interest rate graph for the same time period looked pretty scary..

So now we start all over again .. :)

Bridge of the Gods

Was watching the finale of the Amazing Race tonight and started squealing with been-theres.. This time the Bridge of the Gods in Oregon.  Teams had to find the bridge then go up and jump off it with a flying fox - insanely cool.  Had to get Stu to pause it so I could show him my pics (vs Google Maps).. :)

Bridge of the Gods

Seriously.  It's the best time of the year.  In Sydney it meant quieter roads and less traffic.  In Canberra it means a quiet and peaceful bus trip.  My bus this morning had two whole people on it when it got to my stop, instead of the usual 30 or so noisy kids.

Bliss!!!
