Lifehacker posted a utility a while back called Exif Date Changer.  I used it to great effect on Sandra's Japan photos last night, to add 17 minutes (actually to remove 43 minutes from actual time) to bring all her photos into sync with the rest of ours.

Also used Renamemaster to add camera info the file names of Nat and Andrew's photos, so I know who took a given photo (for credit if/when I post them :) ).
I've had that song in my head since last night.  Can't possibly be because we watched The Meaning of Life last night could it..? :)

A couple of weeks ago, Neil and I decided we needed to have a Monty Python night.  We'd get some Monty Python Holy Grail and watch the movies.  So had him and a couple of Davids over.

And there was much rejoicing.

Altho the others didn't drink nearly enough.  Damn that whole having to drive home thing :/

Epic Tired

Can't keep my eyes open for some reason.. can't possibly have anything to do with the fact I only got about 1-2 hours sleep last night..?!

Is nice to be home.  Nice to have the big screen and nice keyboard.

Facing the reality of life is not so fun.  Especially the idea of going back to work tomorrow.. :(
Cause I'll never remember them next time.

  • SNMP is part of add/remove programs or whatever the equivalent is in Vista
  • SNMP is configured through the services control panel
  • You have allow computers you want to connect to SNMP in the security tab of the SNMP service properties
  • You have to allow your firewall software to allow the connection from the other computer (in my firewall this was in at least two places grrrr)

Stu and Dave and I toddled along to the Darwin exhibition at the museum today.  It wasn't too bad, but a lot of reading under not great lighting and lots of peoples to negotiate.  Spent around two and a half hours there.  Admittedly I actually learnt rather a lot, not having known too much about the story behind Darwin's life.

Of course I had to go look up the connection between him and the city, and sure enough, wikipedia notes that the city of Darwin was in fact name after Charles Darwin.  So there you go!

Tonight (after several vodkas and radiator fluid) watched an old video of Knight Rider (the recent pilot/movie).  Man it was lame!! I mean I used to love the old tv series, but the old series was exceedingly lame after repeat viewings in recent years.  But this telemovie was even lamer, if such a thing were possible.  And the voice of KITT (Knight Industries THREE Thousand) was just *wrong* !!  For some reason I found the cameo by the Hoff majorly cool!  (that's how lame the rest of the thing was!)  Maybe that's why the rest of the series was never broadcast here......
ok so maybe you can get some good deals there.  But I've been to all of two or three computer fairs in my life, and the last two (this year) have been epic fail.  Not the fairs themselves.  But the products for sale therein.

First there was the usb hub.  $12.  Works intermittently.  Will work for a while, then things will just drop out.  Device has to be disconnected and reconnected.  Since it's way up the back of my computer/work desk, this is too impractical for words.  Pulled it out and now it's gathering dust.  Epic fail!

Then there was the VGA to DVI converter dongle.  $9.  Makes the monitor not be able to display white, no matter how much I fiddle with the settings.  Pretty sure this monitor worked perfectly on my last computer.  Probably epic fail!

The rack-mountable patch panel we got that day actually seems to work.  Win!

The airwolf remote-controlled helicopter.  $28.  Bought batteries for it yesterday.  The remote control console doesn't even switch on!!  Epicest fail of all!!!

There's also a ps/2 to usb mouse dongle I got for $3, but haven't tested that yet.  I'm guessing with three out of four failures so far, the probably of it not working are pretty high.

Which is why I will never again waste $3 on computer fairs.
So this morning we (read: Stu) got up early and we wandered off to Nat & Andrew's (where the parking situation is very UNuserfriendly) and then off to the Farmer's Markets.  There wasn't much there this time of year (altho the chickies were still there so we said hello to them) so we didn't buy much.  Played with Natto's ocarina which was a lot of fun - really must get a couple!! and everyone else looked up ecclectic medieval instruments on YouTube.

Then took out the last batch of stuff from our storage unit (after lunch at Fortune Box).  We've had the place for so long it feels kinda weird to let it go.

The afternoon was spent doing "housy" stuff.

Tonight we watched the second part of Tinman (with Iron Chef and Rockwiz in the middle - felt very hungry while Iron Chef was on so cooked up the last of the Christmas turkey with garlic and honey - so yummm and Rockwiz wasn't the same without Julia) over a few drinks..  But I swear it ended just too suddenly .. I was expecting Askedelia to take over the kingdom as a "good" queen and DG to go home to Kansas or wherever .. but it just stopped so suddenly - the stoopid voiceovers starting even before the credits music had started... :(

So I've had quite a lot of cointreau tonight on account of having sold out of all our cheap alcomohol... really must go have a yokult before bed......

Not sure where the Life on Mars reference came from, maybe a link to Ghost Whisperer or something.....

2008 Year in Review

2008 was certainly a momentous year in the life of Kazza.

The first big news story of the year was that I got married to Stu in April.  I spent several months planning the thing, and planned pretty much everything myself.  In the end, the day went pretty successfully and everyone seemed to have a nice time.  I got the wedding I wanted for the most part, although I did get very stressed out by the reception venue, and they ruined the enjoyment of the reception for me.

Following the wedding we took off on our honeymoon, spending a night in Japan, then a month touring Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic.  Took six and a half thousand photos between us and generally had a blast.  Lots of places we'd like to go back to!

The other really big news story of the year is that we bought a house here in Canberra.  And seemingly at just the right time - right in the midst of the world financial crisis which was very scary, but the subsequent drop in interest rates will save us something like $12000 per year!!!  We still have a couple of messy rooms, but are very much enjoying the house and we've had several groups of people stay with us.

Work has been a bit variable.  The first couple of months of the year I was still feeling very overwhelmed by the place, yet didn't have too much to do so was very lost.  After the honeymoon I was put on call, which meant learning a lot of things by being thrown in the deep end.  I was also dumped on severely with work, and found it very stressful from time to time.  Can't see any sign of letup any time soon :(  After a particularly crap day one night in July, I starting drinking with the guys earlier than usual and finished relatively late, which really launched the weekly drinking sessions (which up until that time had been a lot shorter and quieter).

Other travelling included the trip over new years last year to visit Chay and David, a weekend at the coast with Scott and Kerry, a weekend in Sydney in March and another in July to attend my Nana's 80th birthday party, visit James and George, and see Stu's grandmother and aunties.  Two days and ten hours of driving was pretty tiring.  Chay and David came down just after Christmas to stay, which meant we spent two new years in a row with them which would have been cooler had I not collapsed in a grumpy/depressed heap.

In fish news, we cut the number of tanks from fourteen down to seven.  Fourteen was far too much work and fish were getting severly neglected.  Seven is a bit more manageable but we may still cull further.  Moving all the tanks to our new house was definitely not fun, but we got most fish moved with only a few casualties.  One of my original angel fishies is still alive, making her six years old now.  She has appreciated the big water change of the move and laid several batches of eggs after the move.

Eating out, we tried a few various restaurants.  We discovered Satis in Watson in the middle of winter.  Satis is vegetarian and we have been there three or four times, although not since we moved.  Then there is the Kingsland vegan restaurant in Dickson which is fantastic.  Have only been there twice, but will definitely be going again.  And Fortune Box in Gungahlin is still a favourite shopping day lunch spot.  Bella Vista in Belconnen and the Dumpling Inn in Jamison are favourites as well.  Fanciest restaurant we visited all year was Watersedge on Lake Burley Griffin.  This was two weeks before the wedding after I'd had my hair and makeup trial, so we got dressed up and went out for dinner.  Was very nice, but of course very expensive!

We tried to see Stu's brother every week for a "sci-fi" night.  We watched all of Firefly, Serenity and some Battlestar Galactica.  But towards the end of the year this all got too hard.  Hopefully we'll do something next year.

Movies seen this year:
  • Juno - pretty good, if a little unrealistic
  • Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull - fun but too ridiculous and too much on the "yeah right" scale
  • Appleseed Saga: Ex Machina - very well done, but hard to keep up with the subtitles and watch all the action
  • The Dark Knight - good movie, but dark and very long
  • Quantum of Solace - ok, was too tied to the last movie
  • Australia - very enjoyable, but very long (really it's two stories back to back), so don't know how would stand up to repeated viewings
And finally, a few other snippets:

  • This blog had its 5th blogiversary and was celebrated with a new design
  • Visited the Planetarium before it closed and met Andrew
  • Little Squishy was born
  • Went to the balloon fiesta
  • Bought an Eee PC
  • Set off fireworks on cracker night
  • Went to a six-day SANS course
  • Got excited by snow falling in Canberra!
  • Went to an astronomy night at Mt Stromlo
  • Went to two trivia nights - one with Nat and Andrew, and one at work
  • Had the house wired with cat 6 by my brother and Shane and Chris
  • Took the booze train to Tarago
  • Played Zone 3 for the first time and actually won a game
  • Big family Christmas with all of Stu's family and Kerry's family
So that's about it for another year.  Hoping to be a little more organised next year and more relaxed about life...
  • put up the Christmas tree tonight while watching Harry Potter
  • had a thoroughly crap week at work, and to top it off, I'm on call all weekend
  • the house is a mess
  • have a big todo list for the weekend
  • our shopping list of stuff for the house is huge
  • there's an ABBA singstar which comes free with Playstation 3.  We are seriously considering getting it.
  • life is all too hard sometimes

So I lied

Stoopid getting home two hours late from work after having a crap day and then watching tv after having dinner and having to do all the washing up and fighting with Optus' website then suddenly it's 11pm.

Life sux.
