First Friday Five

In the same vein as This or That Tuesday, we have the Friday Five.

1. What did you have for breakfast this morning? If you didn't have breakfast, why not?
I had sultana bran. You know I really hate it when people ask me "Where do you live?" and "What do you do?".. I reckon people should ask more original things. The example I used at my Catch Phrase audition was "what did you have for breakfast this morning?", which was also the icebreaker for the group that did the Harbour Bridge Climb when I went. Yeah yeah stoopid story.

2. What's your favorite cereal?
Favourite? Perhaps Crunchy Nut Cornflakes, or Sultana Bran

3. How often do you eat out? Do you want that to change?
For dinner probably every other week. It's ok; I like eating out, saves cooking, but costs more

4. What do you plan on having for dinner tonight? Got a recipe for that?
I've already had dinner. Had calamari/prawns/crab from a fish and chips shop for Ryan's 4th birthday

5. What's your favorite restaurant? Why?
If Subway counts as a restaurant then that. Otherwise I don't know - maybe Touch of Thai on Glebe Point Rd, or Tums Thai in Randwick - bizarre really since I can't eat very spicy food (too hot!)

Queen Z

It's official: my danios are crazy.

They can't sit still for a second, they're constantly darting around the tank and chasing each other. They go absolutely ballistic when there's food to be had - they devour a pinch of flakes in no time. They'll even all gather round my finger and nibble it if I put it in the water.

There's one fish that's bigger than the rest and I think it's a female because of the shape and colouring. She has decided that the top 1/3 of the tank is her domain, and chases out any of the other fish that come anywhere near. I've decided to call her Queen Z.

My first fish!

Long-finned Zebra Danio
I couldn't wait any longer, I had to get fish this weekend :)

I dropped into our local aquarium today and was served by a *kid* ! He picked out 8 Long-Finned Zebra Danios for me. I also picked up a couple of plants and some flakes for the fish before wandering back up the hill home.

I let the bag sit in the top of the tank for a little while (while planting the plants and rearranging the others a bit), and then added a little tank water to the bag and removed some of the bag water. I did that a couple of times over a bit over half and hour before letting the fish swim out into the tank.

They went totally nuts, swimming around, exploring their new surroundings and chasing each other. They also refused to sit still long enough for me to take a decent photo of them. The pic up the top is the only decent one I got! I also gave them a tiny pinch of food, which they devoured within a minute. I'll give them more next time after they've settled in a bit.

Now the fun part begins - the joys of the ammonia/nitrogen cycles.

I went to Franklins (actually Food for Less now) today to buy a Kambrook timer, and as luck would have it, they had some nice 30L storage buckets. I bought two buckets - one for dechlorinating water, and the other for when I siphon off water during a water change. I've mostly filled one of them for my first water change, which I'll do in a day or two.

I set the timer to turn the lights on at 11:30am, and off again at 10:30pm. That's a lot of daylight, although my ordinary room lighting didn't seem to have supported a large growth of algae (ie, none) so it should be ok. Hopefully the fish will cope with the long days.. it'll be like summer all year round :)

The plants I planted last night look quite happy, they've straightened themselves up nicely and are heading for the tank lights.
