Haven't blogged much this week.  Mainly because nothing much has been happening.  This weekend was pretty much just jigsawing and cleaning the house.

Kore came back on Friday night with new boyfriend Rhys? Rees?  in tow.  We started watching Monty Python and the Holy Grail until he had to leave.  Stu took Kore to Sydney yesterday and she flew out this morning.

The UPS overloaded last night, possibly as a result of the storm.  So that meant pulling out my computer desk, which made the perfect opportunity to give the area a proper cleaning.  So study still has a bit to go on my side, but is much cleaner.

Also last night, National Lampoon's Vacation was on telly.  So of course I had to watch it.  Because it so totally reminds me of my Legoland failure in London a year and a half ago.  What I'd forgotten was that it was filmed at Six Flags Magic Mountain - which I've been to, and they went on the Colossus and the Revolution, so that was pretty squee.

Cooked lots of veggies for dinner tonight.  A few leftovers, and still a bunch of other veggies in the fridge.  Now to cut down the salt .. and exercise more....

2011 Year in Review

So the year began with a small pool party at our house, with beer, pizza, games and good friends.

We didn't travel much this year.  Well, we did a bit, but no big international holidays.  We did a long weekend trip to Queensland in July to visit Chay and David which is always nice.  The only other flying I did was for some training for work in Melbourne.  We went to Dave's coast house in February, April, June and November.  Again, always great weekends away.

Did several trips to Sydney throughout the year:
  • In August for my birthday to see a John Williams concert and visit friends and family
  • In September to play tour guide to Dave2 and be a tourist in my home town
  • In December to repeat the tourist trip with Kore

And a few smaller trips - to Yarrangobilly Caves, Parkes for The Dish 50th Anniversary open day, and Jindabyne to see the dam spilling.

At work I actually had a good beginning of the year.  We got some new staff and for a few months I had time to step back from project work and get some operational stuff done.  But then Phil went away for three months and it got super busy again - doh!  Had a bowling night in June where I *didn't* come last!  Team Blank went to three trivia nights: we came third in April, second in August and first in November!  Of course that means we need to plan the next one!  Planning to have that in March next year.  Had a Hollywood-themed ball in October that I was sick for and was pretty miserable the whole night.

Speaking of sickness, it was one of the worst years I've ever had.  Had a cold in February, with an ear infection and conjunctivitis as well.  Got pretty severe gastro from Violet in March.  Another cold in May and another in August.  And then two months of various colds/flus/ear/eye infections from September to November.  Finally healthy at the moment, but it hasn't been a great year :(

Didn't see as much of Nat and Andrew this year.  The default activity for Saturday nights was watching Buffy and Angel with DaveC, so it took energy to do anything different, hence it didn't happen very often.  We did have a couple of Singstar/video/games nights though.

Not a lot has changed on the fish front.  We (I) made a rule some time back that we wouldn't buy any new fish until after Stu's Japan trip next year.  So numbers have been slowly dwindling there.  We had another heat wave that required regular dumpings of ice to keep tank temperatures down.

Although we had a couple of record lows in winter, the days were generally warmer, and the pool only froze over a couple of times.

The only new Lego this year was a few Harry Potter sets.  Just trying to remember if the Toy Story 3 Lego came out this year or last year.  It certainly didn't all get put away until just the other week!  We went to the Lego Brick Expo in Woden which was pretty awesome.  Also saw Nathan Sawaya's "Art of the Brick" exhibition in Sydney this week.  And an unexpected bonus of lots of Lego displays at the Aquarium yesterday.

Only real toys this year were a new random camera, and a little Eee PC for use when travelling (and in fact I'm using it now!).  I had a play with a macro lens and an L series lens.  Still using my original lens though.  On my phone I played with HDR and Instagram apps, as well as doing my first time lapse videos of Lego building, jigsaw building and clouds.

I had a lot of fun with origami this year - making several "phizz" balls of various sizes.  Also some smaller geometric shapes (technically not origami).

I did some big jigsaws this year (and a stack of little ones).  I did my 3000-piece one that I've had for years but never made.  And then the first quarter of an amazing 24000 piece jigsaw!  Hoping to do the next quarter early in the new year.

After the big La Niña of last summer, got to see Bendora Dam overflowing in January, as well as the aftermath of the floods at Coppins Crossing.  Watched the progress of Cotter Dam and went to an open day in April (didn't go to another open day in November because it looked like they weren't preselling time slots and that didn't work very well at the first open day I went to).

In culinary adventures this year, I tried my hand at quite a few new recipes (and a few old ones).  These were mostly desserts - Anzac Biscuits, Violet Crumble cheesecake slice, Apple pie, Caramel slice, Melting moments, Chocolate dipped fruit, Christmas cookies, Gingerbread.  That was a lot of fun and will continue next year.  Also did quite a few slow-cooked dishes, and rediscovered the simplicity of roast vegetables.  Another new favourite of ours this year was okonomiyaki, thanks to Lisa.  I also tried crocodile for the first time (it was a bit tough) and had my first McFeast (pretty good).  Our favourite restaurants are still Black Pepper, the Dumpling Inn and Bella Vista.  Tried a few new places as well including Courgette for our anniversary, Rice, Alice's and Kingsley's.

Shows seen this year:
  • Weird Al Yankovic
  • Folk Festival
  • Much Ado About Nothing
  • Jesus Christ Superstar
  • John Williams at the Opera House
  • Za Kabuki
  • Floriade Nightfest

Movies seen this year (at the movies):
  • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Part 2)

  • Hook by Geary Gravel (and got a comment by the author!)
  • Lord of the Rings trilogy
  • Mallorean series by David Eddings
  • National Velvet by Enid Bagnold

Other Stuff:
  • Got lots of my photos onto the RiotACT
  • Saddened by the Queensland floods
  • Lots of scanning of old photos
  • Got a GPS and had some fun

  • Watched Amazing Race Australia
  • Did the Mount Majura to Mount Ainslie walk
  • Missed two lunar eclipses (4am the first time, clouds the second time)
  • Met Fiona again (x2), and Lisa and Chris
  • Radio silence in July when our internet went out for two weeks
  • Skiing in July
  • Trivia night for Stu's work
  • Geotagged UK photos, but didn't get them all online
  • Walked up Mount Taylor
  • Stu's sister bought a new house in Canberra which makes visiting somewhat easier
  • Hanami party in September, would have been better a week later
  • Two games nights at Mishi's (only played games on one of the nights)
  • Blog got screwed over (again) by my hosting company
  • Saw the Queen
  • Saw Air Force One come to land at Canberra
  • Got some cool photos of lightning

As usual I don't really make new years resolutions.  I think if anything I'd still like to try and spend less time on the computer - eg two hour chunks in the evenings.

We're having a quiet party in our hotel room tonight.  Just a little champagne and nibblies in our room.  The thought is to watch the 9pm fireworks from the hotel pool, and maybe go out at 11pm to see the main fireworks from Lavender Bay....

Happy New Year!!

Kylie, Debbie

Had another work Christmas party on Wednesday.  Came home pretty depressed that it wasn't the weekend :/

So put on Kylie's Showgirl DVD I'd borrowed off Chris a while back.  I have to say I was a little disappointed.  The whole act was quite wooden (on Kylie's part) and over choreographed.  Very little *energy* and she's not even that great a singer.  Until near the end when she did some of her very early songs.  The variation of "Locomotion" was, er, interesting, but it wasn't til she dumped her rent-a-dancers and was just herself being a bit more relaxed doing "I Should be so Lucky" that I actually enjoyed it.

Last night watched "Singin' in the Rain".  I couldn't help but just watch Debbie Reynolds.  She does look a lot like Princess Leia in places :)
Headed down to the coast for the weekend.

It was pretty much a case of the usual - eating junk food, eating pizza, drinking beer (and a sparkling shiraz), going to the shops for the paper, going to Myrtle Beach for a swim, jigsaw, wii, crosswords, kenkens, and of course, going in the spa :):)

Also had a play with the new Eee PC and got some stuff setup on it, including the GPS software so that made me happy.

On the walk to the shops, I took my new "random" camera to have a bit of a play with it.  Generally I'm happy with it (especially for macros), however its noise reduction is very aggressive, to the point where it almost looks like one of those "paint" filters in Photoshop where big gloops of colour are the same and picture quality is lost.

On our drive to Myrtle Beach we had to stop and wait for the bridge over the Clyde to open/shut.  But we were so far back in the line of cars we didn't get to see it :(

A nice walk through the trees to the beach

We were actually worried that we were going to get rained/stormed on at the beach - this big storm was brewing to the west.  However it moved to the north and the beach stayed in the sun.

These are some of the clouds on the way back.

After playing sports resort on the Wii if you just leave it it goes around the various sports locations and shows your Miis hanging out.  Weird..

Of course the suckiest part of going down the coast is having to clean the entire house before you leave.  All my dreaded tasks (cleaning toilets, vaccuuming) and no way to escape.  Especially when it's so humid.  Blah.  Jumped in the lukewarm spa at the end to recover.

Also the boys both had colds which means I'm pretty much screwed...

But otherwise, a lovely weekend.

So had a pretty decent weekend.  Went out for brunch yesterday morning - into Civic and tried "Cafe Garema" which used to be "My Cafe" (which had given us pretty appalling service once so hadn't been back).  I had eggs benedict (my favourite cafe breakfast) which were pretty good.

The rest of the weekend alternated between doing this jigsaw (5 hours, 37 minutes worth) -

Raining cats and dogs jigsaw
and lots of housework, gardening (whoever had the idea to graft ornamental cherry trees onto aggressive root stock should have been shot), photo sorting, "life" paperwork, and finishing my lifetime list of flights (I've been on eighty planes in my life! (a few repeats)).

Cooked a heap more veggies for dinner tonight - a riot of colour!  Had a small amount of leftovers.

Capsicum, zucchini, mushrooms, red onion, carrot, potato, sweet potato, with fresh oregano and rosemary, olive oil, balsamic vinegar, salt and pepper.. yumm!

Sorry this entry has *heaps* of pictures... Give up now if you're not interested :)

So Friday afternoon I left work super early and headed off into uncharted territory (Lachlan Valley Way - which I don't think I've ever been on in my life before!) and headed north.

Lachlan Valley Way
It's a three and a quarter hour drive to Parkes, but amazingly pretty (compared to the Hume Highway to Sydney which is quite boring for a lot of it).  Had the road to myself for a lot of it, and the sweetie had given me some podcasts to listen to, so was a great drive.

Well that is until the bugs got so bad I couldn't see out the windscreen anymore..

I arrived at my motel at 6:40pm, and had to wait while they tried to find the room key.  Had just barely enough time to dump my stuff and go to the loo before Tony and family picked me up to go to dinner.  We went to Bellas in town which had good reviews.  And we all agreed, the food was delicious.  Although I did eat too much and it meant I took forever to get to sleep!

Watched a bit of The Mummy Returns while waiting for dinner to settle.

Saturday morning it was foggy.  The motel also had a couple of police teams staying the night, apparently to cover the roads to Bathurst.

We were going to have breakfast at Tony's motel, but they don't do breakfasts on weekends.  (?????????)  Lame. So went into town and found an open cafe, and I had bacon, eggs and a hash brown.  It was bigger than I expected but did keep me going all day.

So off to The Dish!!

It was still foggy, but that made for some cool photos.

We wandered through the visitors' centre and joined the queue for the telescope tours.  I think we had to wait maybe three quarters of an hour?  The queue length really didn't change the entire day.

They did have astronauts on segways, classic cars arriving, and Einstein to keep the crowds entertained..

The tour was pretty cool.

We got to climb up a temporary staircase on the outside to the outside platform.

There were even some real astronomers doing some real observing.  Well so they say, I don't know what sort of results they would have gotten with all the people around with mobile phones and video cameras, and moving the dish around all the time..

And finally out the front door

Next we had a wander down the train tracks past the old Kennedy Antenna (not in use anymore)

Past the earth-air heat exchanger.  This is where they take outside air, then pump it underground for eighty metres to get the air to a constant temperature and into the twelve metre dish they have setup for testing for the Square Kilometre Array (SKA).

Then headed back up and had a look around at the classic cars.

One of them gave us quite a surprise - it had wallaby joeys in it!!

Then it was time for the official ceremony.  So they brought the dish down till it almost touched the ground.  So low in fact that it nearly took out a bottlebrush tree as they swung it round.

They attached a banner to The Dish and raised it up during the official speeches by Prof Phillip Diamond (head of CSIRO Astronomy and Space Science) (I think) and Dr Megan Clarke (Head of CSIRO).

They also had one of the sopranos for the night's opera lead a chorus of Happy Birthday (Helen Barnett I think)

Then Jess went off to make some Sandtastic art, so I wandered around and took photos as the sun was coming out.

There were a bunch of people there from the Central West Astronomical Society, some of them with telescopes pointed at the sun.  Which has some super awesome sunspots going on at the moment!

Sunspots
Then had a look in the receiver room.  I never realised that they actually change the receivers all the time!  Takes them a few hours to change them over.  Dad would have loved all this stuff - he would have understood what the dude was talking about :) These are some of the receivers actually in use at the telescope!

Finally we headed back through the visitors' centre to have a look at the displays.

This is a panel that they made up for the movie The Dish (2000) and donated to CSIRO afterwards.

We stopped at a couple of lookout places on the way out.

Then into Parkes to see the War Memorial.  It's supposed to be a lookout, but it was all locked up and nothing there to say it ever opened.  What's the point of a lookout if you can't go up it?  Too many trees around to have any views of the town, so that was a bit fail.

Parkes War Memorial
Then headed to Forbes for a late lunch.  There were like two places open in the entire town, one of them being Subway, so that's what we had.  Then filled the car with petrol and headed home, arriving a bit before 7pm.

So yeah a super fun day away.  Pity the sweetie bailed (still feeling too sick).  We might have gone to Dubbo for the Sunday, but those plans had to be cancelled.  Thanks Tony/Heather/Jess for putting up with me! :)

My dessert challenge this weekend was "Melting Moments".  They turned out pretty well, although the shortbread is pretty dry/floury, I've never been a huge fan of shortbread.  Still, they were liked so that's the main thing.

Melting Moments

Melting Moments

Ingredients

Method

Biscuits:

250g butter, cubed, at room temperature

1/3 cup icing sugar, sifted

1 tsp vanilla essence

1 3/4 cups plain flour

1/3 cup cornflour

Filling:

60g butter, at room temperature

1 tsp vanilla essence

1 orange, rind finely grated

2/3 cup icing sugar, sifted

Preheat oven to 160°C. Line a baking tray with non-stick baking paper.

Beat butter, icing sugar and vanilla essence in a medium bowl with electric beaters until pale and creamy.

Sift together the flour and cornflour, add to the butter mixture and mix with the beaters on low speed until just combined and a soft dough forms.

Lightly flour hands then roll the mixture into small balls. Place on the prepared baking tray about 5cm apart. Use a fork that has been dipped in flour to flatten each ball to about 3cm in diameter and 1 cm thick.

Bake in preheated oven for 15 minutes.  Repeat with the remaining mixture.

Beat the butter, vanilla essence and orange rind in a small bowl with electric beaters until pale and creamy.

Add the icing sugar and beat until combined.

To assemble biscuits, spread the base of a biscuit with filling and then join with another biscuit. Repeat with remaining biscuits and filling.

Sydney 360

When we went up Sydney Tower last weekend, I took a vertical shot out of each window of the tower (all eighty-odd, with a few extra to overlap).  Then I stitched them all together in the best panorama I've done from the tower.

Home!

Home after a long weekend in Sydney, playing tour guide for Dave2!

Was a great weekend being a tourist in my own home town.

I might have accidentally taken 2263 photos ..

So will try and sort them out soon and get some sort of blog entry or three up for it :)
