May 2010 Archives
Actually this was week before last .. been seeing a lot of balloons lately
Last Sunday morning I made pancakes for breakfast
Thursday morning took photos of fish
And saw a big Dong
Friday there were four gak gak birds lined up in a row
Saturday we had a pastry and coffee at Knead
and then did our food shopping afterwards.
I did a jigsaw
And did a bunch of UK planning.
Didn't end up going out for dinner, which was a bit sad-making. Watched Toy Story 1 and 2 instead.
Today it was miserable again, so stayed inside all day. Did a whole lot of nothing, played a game of Ticket to Ride Europe, and cooked dinner. Which is still cooking :)
But I have absolutely nothing interesting to say, and I've run out of holiday to link to.
Had the little brother come and stay for a few days while he worked on a train. But he was in so late every night we barely saw him. And had several very late nights. Oops.
Now that I've blogged every day for a month and linked all my Europe photos, don't know were to go next ;)
I did find something exciting tonight.. when I first setup this blog on this new host two and a half years ago, I could never figure out why the email notifications for comments on my blog didn't work. Well it turned out they did, but they were being bounced because this host expected I was also hosting the MX record on the server, which I wasn't. So tonight when I was poking around at the mail on this server tonight because I actually want to bring the MX record across, I found all those emails!! Epic squeeeee!!!!
Two years ago today we had a little bit of an explore of Heidelberg before heading back to Frankfurt and spending two days flying home. Would have been nice to spend a bit more time in Heidelberg as we didn't get to explore the castle at all.
Overall the honeymoon was pretty darned good. I just wish I'd planned it better. Because I spent so long planning the wedding, I hardly did any honeymoon planning at all. We basically chose what cities we'd be going to and for how long, the first two places accommodation, and that was it. We did most of our planning once we arrived in places, and booked the next accommodation from the previous place. So there were things we missed because we just didn't know about them. And some bad weather in the alps didn't help much either heh.
A bit over a month ago I noticed the last entry of the honeymoon blog that said:
Hopefully it won't take two years to do like my USA photos did... ;)
Yeah. So I'm actually a long way behind even that, because all I managed to do was pick photos for the blog. Nothing has been labelled or geotagged. Oops.
See the entire honeymoon blog on one page (temporarily anyway).
So it seems fitting that two years after the last day of our honeymoon, I booked our next holiday!! To Japan and the UK later this year :)
So was pretty excited tonight to watch them do Masterchef in Hosier Lane, where we stood just a few weeks ago! Stu says we should actually go to Movida next time :)
Was happy enough with the result of Survivor: Heroes vs Villians. Would rather a hero had won heh. But at least the person I didn't want to win didn't get any votes!! In your face!!
Two years ago today we had a lovely drive up the Romantische Strasse, stopping in Nördlingen which we loved (and shot at the end of Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory) and Dinkelsbühl (much more touristy) and ending up in Heidelburg (would liked to have spent more time there).
Last Saturday night, the sweetie and I went with Neil and Windy to see Spamalot.
We had dinner at P.J. O'Reilly's first cause we had Entertainment Book vouchers which gave us a couple of free meals. I had chicken kiev which was pretty average compared to others I've had. But the beers were nice.
Spamalot was *heaps* of fun!! They referenced both mine and Neil's tshirts (Ecky ecky ecky and the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch). The singing was great. I even got to sing "I have to push the pramalot" hehee. One girl distracted the boys with her great .. tracts of land .. hehehee :)
Thoroughly enjoyed it :)
Two years ago today we toured Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein castles!! Had been wanting to do that for twenty years so was extremely cool. In the afternoon we went up Tegelbergbahn which was pretty cool too. Then headed for Augsburg.
Only posting this cause I haven't gotten around to downloading my phone pics from last night ..
We saw this at The Scottish Restaurant the other night.. we all got a giggle out of it..
We saw this at The Scottish Restaurant the other night.. we all got a giggle out of it..
Two years ago today we had an epic squee day in the Austrian Alps, finishing in Füssen and seeing Neuschwanstein!
This morning we headed out to Cafe Injoy for breakfast. Lots of sparrows there to keep us company.
After breakfast we went out to feed the fish, but their water is so disgusting I don't think they could see the bread we were throwing them.
So I fed the pigeons instead. They even sat on me to eat, and I caught a couple of them just because I could.
Then we walked down past some pretty leaves
and past the George Harcourt which is being expanded at the moment
.. to the National Dinosaur Museum! I've had Entertainment Book vouchers for there for the last couple of years so thought we should use em some time. It wasn't a bad little museum, and it even had some real specimens (Stu was most excited by the Ediacara Hills specimens of pre-cambrian fossils). It was $11 each, but was buy one get one free with the voucher, so only $11 for the both of us.
I assembled the vertebrae/spine plates cause there was noone else around :)
Stegosaurus and pterodactyl
Ediacara Hills jellyfish
Ediacara Hills Ovatoscutum
The time was wrong on this cute dinosaur clock
Two years ago today we headed into the Black Forest, had a look at the world's biggest cuckoo clock, stopped at the very pretty Titisee, and ended up and Lindau and the beautiful harbour there in the evening
Hoping I'll get some sleep tonight (after being awake for two hours last night cause of hurty).
Got a little bit more work done today but nowhere near as much as I'd have liked.. oh well..
Two years ago today we left Stuttgart and went for a bit of a drive through the north of the Black Forest area. Had an accidental stop in Calw which turned out to be the highlight of the day. Baden Baden was too un-user friendly to enjoy and the afternoon was a complete disaster because we had no plan. Worst day of the honeymoon.
So I spent the entire day today trying to do my morning routine (and deal with on call daily crap). Felt like I was spinning my wheels and not actually getting anywhere.
Still, it was the end of on call tonight which meant plenty of beer and then dinner out with the boys :)
Two years ago today the sweetie and I went to Legoland Deutschland!! Which was an epic win day :):):) And people do you have *ANY IDEA*.. I mean *ANY AT ALL* how hard it was to cull down my photos from that day???? I took 550 photos that day, and that was severely hampered by how much memory space I had at the time. I cut it down to 58 for the blog...
Walked around Lake Ginninderra in 58 minutes today. Adductors hurt a bit and feet a bit sore.
Oh yeah, and I got to meet the UK CEO of the company that has caused me so much grief over the past year. Fortunately he acknowledged the product had some serious flaws that they were working on as a matter of high priority.. hurrah!!
A couple of cool links:
Two years ago today we left Salzburg for Munich, then picked up a hire car and drove to Ulm. Quite bummed that we didn't spend any time in Munich.. next time!!
And I haven't hung out my washing or taken out the rubbish .. doh...
Two years ago today was a rainy day in Salzburg, so we went to mass, then out to Hellbrunn, and finally back past Schloss Frohnburg - the palace that was used in The Sound of Music!
So we had some leftover ricotta (from the meal in which we had to use the leftover pastry sheets) and some spinach, so thought I'd experiment.
Found a recipe online, and adapted it slightly (used more potatoes, and added tasty and parmesan cheese to the mix).
They turned out pretty well - quite tasty, although I think they'd work better as a side dish to something else than a whole meal unto themselves.
Two years ago today we did the Panorama Tours Sound of Music Tour, followed by our own Sound of Music tour afterwards. Was a great day :)
As far as I know nothing of any great significance happened today. So nothing new to add to my collection of May 16 events. Oh well.
The cherry tree has lost a lot more leaves this year than at the same time last year...
This was my 2743rd blog entry in seven and a bit years..
Today in between crapfullness to deal with for work, I finished assembling all my Toy Story Lego ..
Buzz Lightyear to the rescue!!
*I* am your father!
This isn't flying, this is falling with style!
To inifinity and beyond!
A good soldier never leaves a man behind!
Toy Story Lego!
Two years ago today we left Vienna and headed for Salzburg, wandering around the old town and exploring the fortress, was a great day :)
Went out for breakfast this morning to Black Pepper, then feed the birdies by the lake and then did some shopping at the markets.
This arvo was cleaning house all day and making Lego.
This evening Nat and Andrew came over and we watched some tv and played some Buzz and Wii. And got the worst Pizza Hut pizza *ever* !! Will be writing a letter to Pizza Hut tomorrow about how epic crap it was (nearly two hours wait and it was cold when it got here :( ). But otherwise a fun night.
Some photos of today will be updated when I get around to getting them off the camera...
Two years ago today we visited Schloss Schönbrunn in Vienna, then the Wiener Riesenrad (big Ferris Wheel).
Willy Wagtail and Masked Lapwing
Two years ago today we explored some of Vienna, wasted half the afternoon doing our washing, and walked a looong way along Donauinsel
There was a Kingsley's Chicken frequent customer card on the pool table tonight. Which of course gave me cravings for Kingsley's. I've had Kingsley's once since I moved to Canberra, and that was at the Windys. So I had to go in myself and see what was there for myself. We got some chicken and chips and gravy .. yummmmmmmm!!! :)
Two years ago today we left Prague and headed for Vienna
Crappy crap day today :( Usually I'd be hanging for tomorrow afternoon, but instead I'll be dreading it.. *sigh*
Two years ago today we wandered around Prague. Prague is a very beautiful city but we found it incredibly touristy - gaudy tourist stores everywhere, and money change stores in between every other one. And hoardes. Oh the hoardes.
Some really cool salt crystals at the bottom of the fish water change bucket..
Two years ago today we wandered around Dresden all morning before hopping on a train to Prague
Yesterday was another glorious Canberra autumn day, so we went out for a little walk. As you do.
Two years ago today we left Berlin and went to Dresden, then straight out to Meißen to visit the porcelain museum, and had a look at the old town too.
So we had a bunch of spinach we had to use up, and some ancient frozen pastry sheets in the freezer. So last weekend we got some ricotta.
Today I mixed up the spinach and the ricotta and stuck it all in the pastry sheets.
I've never made pasties before, and by the time the pastry sheets were defrosted enough to separate they were too raw and doughy. So it had potential to be a big disaster. But in the end some turned out and only some were too sticky to work with... and they turned out really well :)
Other than that our Sunday consisted of doing not much, and a nice walk around the neighbourhood.
Two years ago today we explored some more of Berlin, looked at the Reconciliation Church on Bernauer Strasser, visited Potsdamer Platz, the Brandenburg Gate again and the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe
When we were in the taxi to AGIMO yesterday we noticed how lovely the autumn colours were at the moment on the trees around the lake. So after brunch at Gus', we met up with the Windys down at the lake. I took over three hundred photos. Oops.
Two years ago today we headed out to Potsdam and cycled around some of the palaces, then had a swim in Wannsee.
Had an interesting afternoon at AGIMO this arvo hearing about Funnelback (after stopping in for lunch at Caphs in Manuka - I had a caesar salad which was nice enough except that it was completely devoid of any parmesan cheese :( )
Then got a lift into town with the Windys and visited Stu's new office which I'd not seen before.
And then we headed out to dinner at Debacle. I had a Stiegl and a Franziskaner, and Stu had a Pilsner Urquell and a Franziskaner Dunkel. All very nice. For dinner I had pork ribs which were epic nommmm and Stu had a completely gross pizza (anchovies, olives and chilli - yuk!!)
Two years ago today we visited Checkpoint Charlie, walked along the East Side Gallery and went up the Fernsehturm. So much more we could have seen but were tired and a bit stressed out.
Me little brother and co were in Longreach today. So friggen jealous. Think might need to take a road trip or something next winter...
Meanwhile... two years ago today we saw some of the remnants of the Berlin Wall at Bernauer Strasse, visted the Brandenburg Gate and the Reichstag, wandered through the Tiergarten and up the Victory Column, looked at the Kaiser-Wilhelm Memorial Church and Schloss Charlttenburg and took more photos of everything on the way back..
This is Annie's family's new kitty.. apparently her name is Daisy but it gets called Titty .. she doesn't seem to like people too much .. must get terrorised by the kids too much..
Two years ago today we left Cologne and headed for Berlin...
Had a crap afternoon today. Had to talk for an hour straight which was incredibly draining, then got depressed about having my partition lowered and the log transfer situation. Henrch made my day though (in a good way) which saved the day from being a complete disaster.
Then the storms rolled in. I thought I'd try and beat it on an early bus. Only got wet a little bit.
Two years ago today we continued to explore Cologne - having mass in the cathedral, then wandering down the Rhine and visiting the Chocolate Museum, before more wandering around, then out for dinner at Osho's Place.
Nothing really that interesting to say about today. Work was busy, although I didn't get nearly enough done :/
Came home and apart from watching an episode of Survivor only managed to achieve one thing - getting photos online for our day in Cologne two years ago, where we walked up to the top of the cathedral, went on a walking tour of the old town, and did our washing.
Yesterday was a blissfully quiet day. I don't think we even left the house. Did some computer work in the morning, and some jigsaw, and cleaned the pool (while the sweetie had a migraine :( ). Finished the evening off with a little beer, some tv and jigsaw.
Today we got up and ready then headed out for breakfast at Black Pepper, then did our shopping, then headed out to Yass for much nomms.
Noah's joints are a little freaky..!
And suddenly the weekend is over??? How rude!!
I don't think I've done one of these in about three years...

Two years ago today we caught a train from Frankfurt to Cologne via Mainz and marvelled over the cute villages and castles along the Rhine River, and were awestruck by the Cologne cathedral.. was a very good day..
Some time ago, DC and I had been talking about the idea of a "cake in a mug" (after we saw it in Lifehacker or some such) and how his friends had been experimenting with it. Well after their last coast trip away, this is the definitive recipe they've come up with:
- 4 tablespoons sugar
- 4 tablespoons self-raising flour
- 2 tablespoons cocoa
- 1 egg
- splash vanilla essence
- 3 tablespoons oil
Mix the dry ingredients and then the wet ingredients in a greased mug (I didn't do the greasing, that was too hard)
- Mix in 2 tablespoons of chocolate chips (I plonked a bunch in on the top, they ended up sinking to the bottom anyway)
Microwave on high for three minutes
Serving suggestion: serve with ice cream (which the sweetie did)
We used wholemeal sr-flour - which gave it a bit of a rough texture - probably would have been improved with refined sr-flour.
But it was pretty darned nomm for so little effort :)
And while we're here... two years ago today we flew across the wilds of Siberia and ended up in Frankfurt Germany..
