November 2008 Archives
He was coming down to Canberra for the week to work on a train, so last night came over to stay the night. This morning we thought maybe he could have a look at the adsl link which is a bit flakey, and maybe replace a light fitting for us.
Instead he invited his friends over (Shane and Chris with Lowie in tow) and they wired the whole house!!! Cleaned up the incoming phone line, cat 6ed the study, lounge room, spare room and bedroom, with everything terminating to the garage where we'll get a proper switch setup, as well as fixing up the aerial and wiring up the downstairs room with an aerial outlet...!! omigosh!! We were so excited - this was so much more than we were expecting of the day! And we did end up getting the study (dining room) light fitting replaced, a compact fluorescent dimmer installed (only $10 for dimmable compact fluorescents these days, although you do need a trailing edge dimmer not a leading edge one like most currently are), and the other dimmer moved to the living room chandeliers. Totally f-ing brilliant!
Of course having so many people in the house all day was pretty draining, so we ordered pizza and watched the first couple of episodes of Californication season 2. And then I had a meltdown because my computer wouldn't connect to the internet. We replaced the cable (that was working previously) and all seems well, but it was just too much to bear at the time.
And we didn't get anything else that we'd been planning to do this weekend done, but hey, who's complaining..?? :)
Someone from work came over and took away a bunch of our boxes.
Damien came over with lunch and to see the house. Stu and Damien talked for a couple of hours about work.
Then we went over to Damien's new place which was like going back in time to the seventies. And we thought our house was bad. Omigosh. Orange glass. Original shag pile carpet. Original appliances. It was all very amusing and needed to be documented :)
Did a big shopping run, since only did fruit and veg last weekend. Have a fully stocked fridge again.
Babysat Jake so Scott and Kerry could go to the movies. Spent the evening remoting to work to fix a mail problem, and building a lego ferry while watching Mythbusters, Iron Chef and Rockwiz.
Then into work to move a few files off a c: drive on a server that was sending alerts every twenty minutes cause it was low on disk space.
So very very tired now..
- put up the Christmas tree tonight while watching Harry Potter
- had a thoroughly crap week at work, and to top it off, I'm on call all weekend
- the house is a mess
- have a big todo list for the weekend
- our shopping list of stuff for the house is huge
- there's an ABBA singstar which comes free with Playstation 3. We are seriously considering getting it.
- life is all too hard sometimes
Amongst seven people.
What was even scarier is that we ate it all :)
One of the first things that my myriad of browser windows reloaded with was this.. snow on Untersberg!!
One of the things I *don't* like about the new house, is the number of spiders. I've seen lots of them, all different species. The worst of course was the smallish huntsman that was on my computer desk (!!!) This one of course had to be evicted. Stu doesn't like spiders either, and there was much squealing on my part, but we eventually captured it and took it outside.
I'm going to find a brush of some sort, or maybe just use a broom, to regularly brush down the outside areas to keep them clear of cobwebs threatening to terrorise me when I walk through them...
- first sunrise photo (out the window, of sun rays over Mt Ainslie)
- first thing for the house (dish rack from Howard's Storage World)
- first walk (round the new neighbourhood)
One of the things I really really love about this place is the view. From the kitchen there's an amazing view out over Mt Ainslie which I adore. We'll have to go up it again soon and see if we can see this place from there :)
Also one of the nearby houses either feeds the big parrots, or has a tree that they love, because there's always galahs and cockatoos around. Love it!
Gosh what a week.
I think I blogged briefly about the moving. It was a lot of hard work and a bit stressful. Two Men and a Truck were ok, but the younger dude wasn't very professional and didn't take a lot of care with our stuff, and I don't know that I'd want to hire them again.
We were due to have an inspection of our old place on Thursday arvo, so both of us trekked out there to meet them. However they "assumed" that we wanted the inspection on the Friday since that was our last day, and didn't bother to show up. Pretty pissed off about that. Anyway, they came back the next morning without us, complained about some of the long grass at the front (prolly fair enough), and a cobweb in the living room (!?) yet didn't say a thing about the filthy disintegrating curtains.. go figure... Apart from that they said everything was excellent. So at least that's a bit of a relief. No more rental inspections ever!!!
I've spent evenings here and all day yesterday trying to get this place sorted out. Kitchen is mostly done now. We tried the dishwasher for the first time yesterday. (I've never had a dishwasher, so this is very exciting). It was a bit fiddly and didn't start working straight away. Stu fiddled a bit and eventually got it going. We also setup the amplifier and associated paraphernalia yesterday. *And* we did a big food shop. Finally have a fridge full of vegetables, which I've been craving for a week. Got very sick of fast food for a while there!
What's been with the weather this week? It suddenly got *cold* ! Top of only seventeen yesterday. Not good pool weather! heh. I shouldn't complain, it'll get hot soon enough and I'll be wishing it was cooler :)
Pretty much all moved. House pretty much all cleaned. Nat and Andrew came to the rescue for a few hours yesterday which was appreciated beyond measure. Carpets being cleaned this morning. Inspection tomorrow. Back at work, but very stressed about it (stoopid deadlines and don't know what I'm doing). ADSL tech made Stu wait around all Friday afternoon, then didn't bother to show up :( No idea if/when we'll get internet at home. *sigh*
Things may be a little sporadic for a while...
Very long, tiring day. Most of it spent dismantling and transporting fish tanks to the new house. We did the big angel tank, the 2' kribbie tank, the 1' kribbie tank, the 1' guppy tank, and took all the fish out of the 4' (all except about three little babies (a couple of multies and a juli), which proved too painful to catch). I might have a go later and put em in a container. We still have the 2' tettie tank and the macquarium, as well as the 4' itself to go. Other than that, about a trailer load or two of other bits and pieces was all we managed to transport today.
Three men and a truck coming tomorrow morning. Still lots of furniture not clear enough for them to take yet :(
- Puddle vacuumed and christened
- Tax submitted
- Todo list printed
- $20000 transferred
- Stomach purged
- ADSL *not* installed :(
