Yass evening

| | Comments (0)
Had a nice quiet house day today.  Late this arvo we headed out to Yass, despite the second migraine for the sweetie in two days :(

Pink flowers

I got to take a whole heap of photos of the chookens

.. before moving in the wrong way freaked one of them out and she flew over the fence and onto the balcony then the garage roof..

Chooken on the roof
Annie made a delicous lasagna, and then we all watched Nanny McPhee.

Took a photo of a very yellow looking blue moon..

And that's mars there on the bottom left... (really!)

Woke up early this morning (6am) and couldn't get back to sleep.  So got up early and saw this..

Tonight I juiced about a dozen lemons (the slightly older ones).  There's still a dozen left!  Anyone want any lemons?  We have them coming out the wazoo at the moment..

Tonight after drinks we went over to Damien and Amanda's then out to The Dumpling Inn for dinner. Was a very pleasant meal and evening. The Dumpling Inn was the emptiest I've ever seen it - usually it's packed to overflowing...

I was actually online to have a look at an old script and bit of SQL code which stopped working when I transferred my hosting off Godzilla a couple of years ago.  I took a while to remember the sql password and figure out what I needed to change to access MySQL on the new host.  Finally got the address book scripts to work, but the birthday script wasn't ordering correctly - it was ordering by item key, not what I'd said to order by.  Figured it out tonight - it had some extra ' characters that it didn't need.

Check this out:

  $SQL="select id, firstname, lastname, birthday, month(birthday), monthname(birthday), year(birthday), dayofmonth(birthday), ceiling((TO_DAYS(NOW())-TO_DAYS(birthday))/365.25) AS agenext from addressbook where ceiling((TO_DAYS(NOW())-TO_DAYS(birthday))/365.25) is not null order by month(birthday), dayofmonth(birthday);";

So it pulls out a bunch of data from a database including the person's name and their birthday day/month/year.  Then it figures out the age they are turning next by looking at the date now and the date of their birthday and dividing by the number of days in the year.  The .25 on the end is important, as MySQL uses this for years, and the calculations could be out by a day on the day of the person's birthday if it's wrong.  Then it orders it chronologically.  Perl is used to put it all together into a neat table which has the person, their birthday, and their age next birthday in a table, ordered correctly, on the fly.

I'm sure there's probably better, less hacky ways of doing it, but I was pretty impressed with it at the time (feel free to put down how you'd do it in the comments :) )

Happy Australia Day/Invasion Day, whatever you want to call it.  My ancestors set foot on this country two hundred and twenty-two years ago today!

We celebrated by building some more Expedit shelves :)

Didn't have any lamb in the house, so ended up having beer and pizza for dinner. It seemed a vaguely Australian thing to do.. altho the pizza not so much ;)

Today Stu sold ten of our adult multis to Jem Aquatics (and got $6 each for them).  And then he went and bought ten Tropheus duboisi fish.

They refused to eat anything Stu tried to feed them tonight.  But they do look kinda cool, and they were following each other round the tank ..

The poor little multies look a bit terrorised though (even tho the duboisis are vegetarian)

Spent a good chunk of today moving the rest of the books into the garage, and building more shelves...

Such a stinking hot day today!!  Actually it only got to about 36 which wasn't as bad as during the week or last week.

After lunch Bring It Home delivered all our Ikea shelves.  Stu wanted to build one, so I started clearing out the books from the shelves.  It's going to be a long process!  Got the easier books moved the garage, but have been going through Stu's books which have all gotten mixed up after two moves and putting them back into categories.  In the end he built all three of the Billy shelves, and I got maybe a third of the books moved to the garage or sorted out.

Lots of shelves in the garage

Had an extremelly refreshing swim before heading out to Bunnings to get some brackets, and then do our food shopping.  While we were shopping a change came through, and temperatures plummeted (it's 17C now) and a nice strong wind blew all the hot air out of the house - hurrah!!  So I sit here freezing, but need to leave windows open to reboot the temperature in the house.

Had these for dessert - nomm!

Is this thing on?

Yesterday was a day of mostly downs.  Just too much crap.

Today was a bit better.  Even had some down time to catch up on things like cleaning out my inbox...

Stinking hot today.  Bushfire weather (hot+dry+strong north-westerly wind).  Sweated most of the night then cooled down in the puddle.  Then it rained.  Was quite strange since I'd just been looking at the stars minutes before...

The sweetie wants to get an air conditioner for the bedroom ... can't say I blame him in this weather.. the heat is making it impossible to sleep .. even with the fan on high...

Mostly ups

Had a much better day today.  Released to prod for 2/3 users without any dramas.  So actually had some of the day to catch up on stuff that's being neglected.

Had a big lunch at Wok It Up, so was thinking I'd have a smaller dinner.  Except James was in town so we went to Bella Vista for dinner (had the lasagna tonight) so ate too much - oops!  We've decided it's a conspiracy - whenever James comes to town Stu is almost always feeling sick :(  After dinner James came back here and we played a couple of games of Monty Python Fluxx and then the boys did some boring computer stuff :)

Check out this cloud we saw today..

The Dark Side

| | Comments (3)

Well I did it today. I turned to the Dark Side. Still getting the hang of it and a bit frustrated with the iTunes store connectivity. Or maybe it was just our wireless being flaky.. Who knows. Anyway I have my Flight Control fix now so it's all good :)

Work was much better today too. Made progress with testing and think we found the limits of what the product will do (which isn't much). So came home not completely stressed/depressed for a change.

And for the first time since I upgraded Movable Type I can blog from my phone!

Where was I?

Saturday was a nice quiet day at home.  At night went out for Chris H's 50th.  Was a good night, had fun.

Sunday had another relatively quiet day.  Windy&co came over for a swim, but I spent all of two minutes in the pool before the kids' splashing pissed me off too much :/

Today was the dread of back to work.  Started off craply, but improved marginally when we figured out the testing problem.  Still not getting great results and the pressure of getting to production is wearing me down :/

Got home very late, but the sweetie cooked dinner so actually felt somewhat peaceful for the evening.

Generally crap day.  Finished completely craply at work.  Potty came over and we had pizza and watched Harry Potter (and the Half Blood Prince).  Then I went and hung the washing out and got depressed about work all over again *sigh*

Drained Take 3

Is it home time yet?

Another up and down kind of a day.  Awoken at 5:20 by the hurties, but managed to get back to sleep with pain killers.  Mostly productive day between grumpiness with Certain People.  Got called a wanker by some bitch at drinks.  Got a lift to Gold Creek with Kingsley (even though the bus beat us ;) ).  Had fish and chips for dinner.  Played lots of recorder and a bit of glockenspiel.  Very sleepie.

Drained Take 2

Up and down kind of a day.  Mostly good though.  Had a pretty productive morning and was in a pretty good mood until Certain People came along to hassle me for not doing things their way.  Good afternoon though.

Then Arian & Co came over again and we got Dumpling Inn takeaway and enjoyed the pool which was still very warm.  And the change FINALLY came through!! Hurrah!! :)  Put some more ice in the fish tank (it was up to 32C) and with the cool air coming through it's down to 29C now.

Heat and being sociable and a late night has completely drained me :(

Had Arian&co over for dinner/swimming tonight.  Had pizza.  They built a computer.  We all sweltered.  The fish tank got up to 31C before we dumped the ice we had into the tank, which brought it down a degree.  Hoping to heck it cools down enough overnight so we don't have a repeat of last February.

Accidently broke my blog this arvo while trying to make another database work, but didn't realise til just now.. so sorry if you tried to comment.

House is looking incredibly bare at the moment.. most stuff that has been lying about has been packed up into the spare room.  The idea being that the less stuff there is out, the less things that can be broken ...

It's stoopidly hot.  And no breeze tonight, so the place is still stifling :/  Hope the fishies will be ok tomorrow...

Yes, it was as good as it looks :)  Even the sweetie thought so :)

Last night was going to be the last night I had up my Christmas lights for the year, so the last opportunity to have some fun with them.  They're 100Hz, so dotty.  I'll have to setup the incandescent ones somewhere one year to get solid lines.. :)

This trip was organised last year, and they wanted us to come for a whole week, but we both would have gone stir crazy, so just went down Wednesday morning to Saturday morning.

Arrived around lunch time, and made ourselves some toasted sandwiches.  The house is huge - lots of living space, three full bathrooms, but only four bedrooms.  Very well equipped though.

Living room
Some time after lunch some of us headed down to the local beach (the little one at the north end of Malua Bay area).  Went for a snorkel and saw lots of cool fish, and then had a good long swim with a giant stingray - was awesome!  Then it decided to swim away, so I couldn't keep up with it :)

Came back for beer o'clock, and had a couple of awesome roasts (pork and lamb) for dinner.  Unlocked all the cups on Noah's DS, and later we watched Star Trek.

On Thursday it was quite overcast.  It was Lily's birthday so we went to Mogo Zoo (see separate link for pictures).  Note to self:  don't try to go to any of the keeper talks next time!  All the hoards of people were mostly doing the same thing in the same order, so you just couldn't move in the place.  The pathways are all so narrow and it was stiflingly humid and a bit rainy and so we all got peopled out very quickly.  So much so that we didn't even have the energy to see all of the zoo.  Headed back to the house for a big lunch of stirfry and chicken kebabs.

Got completely bored out of my brain in the afternoon.  Was totally kicking myself that I didn't bring jigsaws or other things for me to do.  And whenever I went anywhere near the Wii, all the kids would jump up and want to play too (even when they were all otherwise occupied).  Since there were only two wiimotes, it wasn't very practical to play with more than two.  It was all a bit frustrating.  Had a bit of a meltdown and went and hid for a while.

Later in the afternoon sat around and nibbled junk food while having a little party for Lily.

Lily party

Had some beer, then they got chinese takeaway, but we were all still full from lunch and the party that we didn't get much.  Tried to teach Potty Monty Python Fluxx but he just didn't "get" it so that was a bit of a fizzer.  Had some wine and watched some of Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, and started to feel better.

Friday we headed down to the Tomaga River with the boat.  Except Stu and Annie kept on driving past the turn off, so we thought they'd missed it.  Waited and waited for them to realise they'd lost us and turn around but they never did.  So we went driving to try and find them.  Eventually we saw them and thought they were following us, but then they turned off *again*.  We couldn't understand it and it was very frustrating.  Eventually we gave up and went to the river.  The others turned up shortly after - turns out they'd just decided to go for a drive.  It would have been nice if they'd told us they were going to do this so we didn't stress out about it :/  Not happy Jan!

Went for a little putter up the river on the boat with Potty

Stu and I swam across the river to get to the sand flats on the other side, but hadn't considered how hard the shallow muddy reed beds would be to get across.. oops.  But saw lots of shell fishy thingies, and a soldier crab (a dog had scared all the birds away).  Crossed the river again downstream where there were no reeds :)

We left some time before the others, and couldn't get the key to work on the front door (it does work, but is very fiddly).  Wandered around the back of the house to see if there was another lock it would work on, only to find the back bathroom door wide open .. oops..

Nibbled on some random food.  Later in the afternoon Potty and I went snorkelling again, but it was quite rough, and lots of churned up gunk in the water, so couldn't see much (not that there was that much to see anyway - most of the fishies must have been in hiding).

Finished off the beer.  Kerry made pizzas for dinner, but none of us were particularly hungry.  Watched Flightplan on tv.

Saturday morning was pack up and go home.  The fridge was still *full* of food - probably enough for another week :/  So of course half of it got thrown out :/  I won't mention the dishwasher incident.  *sigh*  Was only too glad to go home basically.  Although we did stop into The Scottish Restaurant so Stu could get some brunch.  Finally home around lunch time.

Seven Year Itch?

| | Comments (5)
So as of today I've been blogging for seven years  (!?!)

I didn't realise seven years ago what I was getting into.  But now that it's been going for so long, I'm almost dependant on it.  I've been blogging for nearly 20% of my life, which means I have a brilliant record of the crap that I've done.

Thanks to everyone that still continues to read my boring drivel, I think I'll be around for a while yet :)

A couple more books

| | Comments (5)
Late last year I finished another couple of books.

First, "Watership Down", by Richard Adams - a bookcrossing book I picked up a few years ago.  Not too bad, but a little slow going (picked up at the end).  It's a bit meandering, and just when you think it could stop they just keep on going.  And I realised they were going to need does before they'd even left, you wonder why they didn't (they were male *rabbits* for heavens sake!)...

Also, "On the Banks of Plum Creek" by Laura Ingalls Wilder.  So *this* is the book they based the tv series off.  They're in Minnesota, with the house seen the tv show (with the upstairs attic room for the girls), and where Nellie Oleson is.  Turns out (from the beginning of the next book) they only spent about five years here from when Laura was eight to thirteen.

One of these days I'll have do a road trip across the prairies of America.  Like Australia's wide open spaces, I imagine it's a little hard to comprehend how vast they are.  I did get a hint of it in 2000 when I flew from San Francisco to New York.  This was taken over Nebraska somewhere, and I was amazed at how endless the plains were...

Two days into the new year and I've already forgotten to post for a day!

2010 here we come!

| | Comments (0)
So yesterday morning I hopped in my car and drove to Sydney.  Apart from overheating slightly when going at 110, my car worked fine - hurrah!  Saw four police cars out and about.

Arrived at James and George's a bit after 2pm.  Played some Wii Olympics with the kids until other people turned up.  Then had a very pleasant afternoon/evening of chatting/drinking/eating/eating/eating/playing/present opening.  Watched the fireworks at midnight (only thirteen minutes worth - ripped off!) and went to bed.  Not really sure how well I slept - it felt like I was awake most of the night because the mattress was very soft, but I don't feel like a zombie today so must have gotten reasonable sleep.

But was a bit sad cause is the first New Years Eve I've had since knowing Stu that I haven't been with him :(

So this morning I came home again.  Almost got sideswiped by a Suburu turning off Pennant Hills Road, but he was doing the speed I wanted to go, so followed him all the way to the Southern Highlands (he turned off before I got to Sutton Forest maccas).  Only saw three cop cars.

So that was my very boring New Years.  Almost went to bed without blogging tonight but decided to try and keep up last year's resolution to try and blog every day where practicable.  We're also going to weigh ourselves every day (we have Wii Fit Plus now - there's some cool new activities on it to do).  Other resolutions?  Just the usual - trying to be more organised around the house - with cleaning and maintenance and the fish and plants etc etc.  We'll see how we go.. :)

Happy 2010!! :)
