Day 8 - Friday 6 March - Naracoorte and Mt Gambier

Awake for a while at various points in the night but not too bad. Still a slow start though and out the door a bit after 10. Sadly it seems I'm sick. Bit of a sore throat/cough/sniffle. Shoulda worn a mask in Melbourne. Sigh.

We headed north in the morning, our first stop being Bool Lagoon (saw a couple of emus on the way but didn't get a photo).

First up we walked out to the Gahnia bird hide near the entrance. On the way we saw a snake which was pretty cool. The bird hide was just a wooden fence with holes in it, nothing like the wonderful Ian Mitchener bird hide we went to yesterday. But other than a couple of magpies in the area we saw pretty much nothing.

So then we tried the Copperhead bird hide. At least this one had a roof, but no chairs and nothing to see.

Then drove up to the top of the Big Hill to confirm there was no water anywhere in the lagoon. So we declared the whole place a bust. We did talk to a dude and his grandson who were looking around too.

So instead we headed over to Naracoorte Caves. We just managed to get tickets for the Alexanda Caves tour at 13:30. Had some snackages while we waited.

Alexandra Caves is very pretty. The coolest thing is all the straws at the end.

We did the roof top walk, but it was pretty boring and you can't go into any caves on that walk.

Then went into the "museum" which had maybe a dozen actual fossils but then a big room with a big diorama of prehistoric animals. Not really what I was expecting. Oh well.

On the way back to Mt Gambier we dropped into Kalangadoo. When I was in high school I went to the CRA National Science Summer School and my "buddy" was Meg from Kalangadoo. So it was kinda cool to see her home town. It was actually quite a pretty little town although not much there apart from the pub.

Back in Mt Gambier we went down to Valley Lake again to redo some photos (and Stu did some bird watching). Then redid a couple of the lookouts over Valley Lake and also Blue Lake.

Then to Coles for supplies and back to the motel for beer/dinner/gps/photo stuff. We left the bath mat on the floor in the morning and they replaced it which was nice.
