AWW Children's Birthday Cake Book - Stove

In a team meeting a while back Con mentioned that he had the "Stove" cake out of the Australian Women's Weekly Childrend's Birthday Cake Book as a kid.  I filed that away and when it came time for his birthday, I made it.

Start with one butter cake, this one baked at 160C for 25 minutes.  I made this on the Wednesday night.

Turned out to cool.

Next morning was time to assemble and decorate.

You're meant to cut a 10cm, an 8cm and a 10cm section, but that would have made the proportions all wrong (my pan was like 27cm long not 28cm), so pretty much just eyballed it.  Use a bunch of toothpicks to hold the back piece on.

Looks pretty good.  I could possibly have trimmed that middle bit slightly.

Then I had to make some icing and coat it.  This is where the wheels fell of slightly.  I really shouldn't have agreed to a lift from Chrissie, as she has a set start time and I didn't want to make her late, so I had a deadline, and it was going to be a struggle to meet it.  So it's a rushed job and there's crumbs all through the icing.

You're meant to use green musk sticks, but I couldn't find any.  I also didn't have time to be fussy about trimming them and lining them up nicely.  I couldn't find any string licorice (I'll probably have to buy the stuff online) but I did find some in wheels, which I hastily cut in two to make the hotplates.  The frying pan I made out of cardboard on Tuesday night so had that ready to go (I couldn't find any toy utensils small enough to work).  The oven door is missing a handle and tea towel because I simply didn't have time.

But given how rushed it was I'm amazed that it actually turned out as well as it did!
