Day 1 - Friday 28 February - Canberra to Adelaide

The sweetie very kindly gave me a lift to the airport on Friday after lunch.

No flight out of Canberra would be complete without a photo of this fountain!

Canberra Airport really needs better space after security to put all your bags back together after going through security.

When I'd tried to book seats for this leg I couldn't get my usual window seat down the back because all the seats were taken.  Sure enough the whole back of the plane was filled with kids. So I had to sit up the front - in front of the engine!  Bit of a novelty heh.  And quieter too.

The back of the plane was fully booked out so I had to sit in front of the engine!

Of course someone behind me and the dude next to me were sick and sniffing and coughing and not wearing a damned mask.  Have people learnt nothing from covid???

The flight out of Canberra was great - taking the usual flight path round the north/west of the city giving a great view.

Arrived in Melbourne and wandered to my next gate.  Then realised I'm a total IDIOT because when I booked my seat for the next leg I didn't look at the layout of Adelaide airport and picked a seat on the right side of the plane (easier to hold the camera) and not the left.  IDIOT IDIOT IDIOT IDIOT IDIOT.  Would have had a perfect view of Adelaide city on the approach.  Sigh.

Got to Adelaide a few minutes before Mum.  Had a look at the arrivals board to see which gate she'd be coming in at and saw her get off the plane.  May have stopped at The Scottish Restaurant for a small fries because I'd only had a super light lunch and I was starving and it was still quite a while to dinner.  Grabbed our bags and walked All The Way up the back of the rental car place to pick up our car.  Annoyingly the satnav subscription had expired so I had to use my phone.  Also annoyingly there was no USB-A socket, only USB-C which did me no good at all.

The GPS subscription in the car had expired. So I had to use my phone.

Pam called us while we were getting organised so we talked to her for a while about the plan for tomorrow.

Then had to figure out how to use the car - specifically the handbrake which was a tiny button and counter-intuitively pulled up to release and down to set.

Got to the hotel no problems.  Traffic in Adelaide was relatively light, even for a Friday night.  The hotel car park was "full" so had to park at the motel they own next door.  For $15/night.  If I'd known they weren't going to charge until the end of the stay (I thought I paid up front) I would have parked on South Terrace for free.   Oh well.

Room was nice enough, with good aircon that made it lovely and cool.

Had a quick look around on my phone and headed out to find dinner.  There's really not much along South Terrace, but found Fasta Pasta Italian restaurant that wasn't too far away.  It was ok but definitely not great.

Crown was my Uncle Geoff's favourite beer so had one in his honour, and made a point to find out Graham's favourite beer.

After dinner we walked all the way back to King William Street mainly to see how long it would take if we wanted to take a tram into the city.  But also to walk off dinner.  And see what options were around for breakfast.  Hint: nothing.
