The rest of the weekend

| | Comments (2)

heh, it seems I've used that title before :)

Saturday.
Unpacked 13lb of lego I got from Canada in the post this week. There's a couple of cool space sets, but the rest of it is just classic lego, not terribly interesting. Took over three months to get here by surface mail - yuk!

Then went out for Thai with J&G and a bunch of their friends (which is impressive in itself since neither of them will eat spicy food). Experienced the joys of going to places alone.. after being held up behind an accident for fifteen minutes, so was running late, then had to navigate as well and try to find out where I was actually trying to go to, then had to park right in front of everyone which meant I hit the curb - twice, and after all that couldn't drink because I was driving. Except then James offered to drive my car home for me, so I finally relaxed and enjoyed the night. Which went very late. Didn't get to bed til 2am - whoops.

Sunday.
Today after church (through the pouring rain) and a bit of a chat to Stu, I cursed undergravel filters, as I had to pull the entire tank apart to clean it. Pulled out the undergravel filters and am going to stick to power filters. This was after the second tiger barb died, probably due to fetid conditions in the tank.

And tonight I went to the parents with Dave & Yvonne for dinner. After dinner we played Scategories (which mum won) and Star Wars Trivial Pursuit, which is a heck of a lot harder than I thought it would be. We didn't use the dvd because mum was watching telly, so just did all the questions from the cards. I declared the game finished when Dave finally got all six wedgies (I had five). Think I need to watch the movies a few more times. And read the books. And watch any making of specials (one of the questions was what did they mix with glass beads to make fake snow for Hoth). Much fun to be had with that game methinks. And I kept getting annoyed at Dad & Dave getting easy questions all the time. Oh, and if in doubt answer "Obi-Wan Kenobi" - it's seriously the answer to half the questions in the game ;)

Gingerbread House Night

Had our church Gingerbread House night tonight. As always was a lot of fun, and was good to catch up with Cynthia.

I decided to "render" my house this year. It's a bit messier to put together, but a bit easier to stick lollies on. My actual design was somewhat boring (as I'm not creative at all), but I did make my house "stand out from the crowd" so to speak, by attaching battery powered led lights to the eaves. And the effect was, well, to put it mildly, spectacular. Looks like the thing had festoon lights on it. Very very cool.

LTO2

And on another lighter note from yesterday, we replaced an LTO with and LTO2 tape drive in a server and it actually worked!! Using an old version of Backup Exec and everything. Surely not!

Drank probably too much last night.
But it was all good ;)
Good food, good wine, good company.

Although as a consequence I didn't sleep very well and really feeling it now heh
Think will go to bed soon - as soon as Stu goes
:)

Exhaustion

Gosh it's been a long day. I can barely keep awake.

Got up early and went into work. They were planning a power outage, so we thought we'd take the opportunity to re-lay all the power cabling in the server room, since all the servers would have to be off anyway. It actually went really well. Working by the light of an emergency room light, a rechargeable lamp, and a head lamp, we totally cleaned up all the power cables in the room. Installed a new UPS as well, and a new PDU, and a couple of serial port extension boxes.

Came home at lunch time and started cooking dinner (a beef stew - you need all afternoon to cook it properly). Then talked to Stu for a bit, played my recorder, monitored the dinner. Then the parents called up to invite me over to dinner, but I said I was already cooking it, so they came over here instead.

And they only just left. Showed them pics from various trips to Queensland and Yass and the aquarium, and Luc's renovation photos, all 1400 of them. Then had to burn a cd of my USA pics.

Watching Harry Potter, but can barely keep awake and still need to clean up the kitchen some, and wash my hair.. urghh

Well actually it'll be Thursday. So I had Monday on a Wednesday, Thursday will be on a Friday, and my Friday will be on Saturday. Spent all of my Tuesday (Thursday) planning for Friday (Saturday).

Are you all confused yet? :)
I am :)

Makes them slightly easier to bear :/
Caught up with lots of crap at work. It's amazing how quickly it piles up.
And then got home to a big bill from the tax department. Knew the refund was too good to be true.

Reality Sux

Just put my boy on a plane. So now it's back to reality. And reality sux. Truly.

Very very lazy morning. Let Stu sleep in til 11:30 (!) before getting him up and taking him to the aquarium at Darling Harbour. He quite enjoyed it, as I thought he would. Then it was home for pizza for dinner, and then off to the airport. And so endeth another lovely long weekend.

(just having a play on my tenor recorder which arrived today off ebay - sounds really nice, but really hard to play the lower notes cause my fingers aint big enough!)

No internet!

I spent most of today without internet! Without even a mobile! I felt terribly cut off :)
But had a lovely day with Dave & Yvonne and The Child (and Stu of course ;) , swimming and 4 wheel driving (in my laser, it was a bit hairy!), and barbequeing and just generally relaxing. Feeling extremelly tired now though. And a detour at the M5/M7 interchange was a bit stressful. But got The Child dropped off safely and now about to crash in the general direction of a bed.

Yass continued

Another pleasant relaxing day. Slept in a bit, had breakfast, got ready, went shopping for food for lunch. Then went to a park and Scott and Kerry and Jake came up from Canberra and met us there. After lunch wandered back to Annie and Stu's and watched Finding Nemo (again). Then a siesta, then dinner, then spent the whole night doing a five way sudoku, and was making progress on it when I discovered I'd made a mistake with it and the entire thing was ruined. Grunties. Also watched an interesting doco on the Columbia disaster. And now it's time for bed :)

Myass

So my day began at 6:15 with a wake up call to my boy. Decided to get up and get ready, and glad I did because I was quite busy all morning cleaning and doing myself up heh :) Picked up Stu from airport, then meandered down to Yass. I really wanted to get a photo of the My Ass (er, M Yass) sign but they seem to have replaced it or removed it because we didn't see it.

Arrived in Yass and met Annie and Stu who were lovely and Noah and Lily who were cute as :)

Had a late lunch before going for a walk around Yass. Watched Finding Nemo with the kids, then had some yummy Vietnamese for dinner then just relaxed in front of the telly. Now Stu and I are catching up with the world on our Blackberries heh :) All in all a pretty good day.

Risk management

| | Comments (1)

For once we had a meeting today that was actually pretty interesting. All about risk management and what sort of things could happen that would prevent us doing our work and providing the services we do, and the impact any such interruption would have on our users.

At one point though, there was the question of what would happen if something so horrendous happened that our unit was shut down because of it and outsourced back to central IT services. And I started freaking out about what if a server got hacked and I ended up losing my job over it. Especially since I'm the bunny responsible for the darned things. It was rather an ominous thought.

But it was also a good meeting in terms of just making us think about things some more, and what we could do to address the issues in the future.
