Small note to myself - all photos in New York are three hours out (up until Sunday night) because I forgot to change the time on the camera. Oops.
Had a long day today. Last night we stayed up very late (1:30am) watching a double episode of Star Trek Next Gen (Unification I and II).
Got up at 7:20 so we could make it down to Battery Park by 9:30. Caught the ferry over to the Statue of Liberty which gives you a great view of the city. Even though we were on the second or third ferry of the day, it still took well over an hour to get up to the crown.

Had to wait quite a while to get up - the line moves *extremelly* slowly up the stairs - you certainly don't get exhausted going up! The windows in the crown are *tiny* - they're much smaller than I thought they would be.

After coming down we wandered about the island before catching the ferry back. Decided not to stop off at Ellis Island - maybe another time.

Back on Manhattan we got back on one of the Big Apple Tours tour buses and did a 2-3 hour tour of Brooklyn etc. I sat outside to get better photos but it was *freezing*!

It was almost dark by the time we got back (4:45pm) and we were starving! (no breakfast and not much lunch - just a $2 hot dog), so we had some food.
Then we walked down to Times Square where I took some photos.

I was amazed how many big production shows are running at any given time in New York. In Sydney you might only get one or two at a time. Here there's probably at least ten!
Another crazy thing about New York is there's no alley ways in the main grid bit of the city. So all the rubbish for all of the stores just gets dumped out on the footpaths. Makes the place really dirty and untidy looking.
Then headed back to the hotel. On the way back we happened to be outside the theatre that David Hasselhoff was performing at - and he was there signing autographs! Talk about being at the right place at the right time! Got a couple of snaps - not very good.

By this time it was 6:15pm but I did not feel like just watching tv all night, so dropped into a theatre playing Rocky Horror show - and got a ticket! A $30 ticket right on the side - but the theatre was very small so it was actually quite a good seat. The show was very well done. And I had to resist the urge to grope Rocky's butt when he was standing *right next to me* !
Felt more alive today after eleven hours sleep :)
This morning we went on a Gray Line "Deluxe City Tour" of San Francisco.
We drove around a lot of places and got lots of information about the city. Saw (or heard about) quite a few things that I didn't get photos of, for example Dolores Street which has a building dating back to the 1700s; redwood houses built in the 1800s on 17th Street; a purple house that glows in the dark. Apparently the average house is $503k, and a 1 bedroom place is $1800 to rent! 864k people live in the city, but many more commute from further away. Apparently there are 2986 restaurants in San Francisco!

Quite surprised this one worked at all - was taken from the opposite side of a tour bus through the window
They took us up to Twin Peaks where we got a great view of the city. We got on the wrong bus when we were done - oops! But were able to get on the other one of the pair of buses that was touring.

When the tour was done we were dropped off at Fisherman's Wharf. We had a bit of a wander through Pier 39 of Fisherman's Wharf. Very touristy.

By chance we met up with a guy that Pete used to work with, so we went and had lunch at "Bubba Gumps", based on the movie "Forrest Gump". It was "only" $11 for lunch, but with the Australian dollar being only 50c US, it doubled the price, making it over $20 - a lot more than I wanted to spend.

We were just having lunch in this restaurant on Pier 39 when they got these guys to stand up with ice cream on their heads and everyone sung happy birthday to them.. weird stuff!

After lunch we were running late and missed our scheduled ferry to Alcatraz. Oops. Fortunately we were still able to get out there. Did the audio guided tour which was quite interesting. They give you these walkmans which give you a self guided tour round the prison block, pointing out where things happened, who inhabited various cells, details of various escape attempts etc. Then wandered around and caught the last ferry back.

Then we walked back from Fisherman's Wharf to the hotel. We had a *huge* pizza for dinner - whoops. Still have two pieces of it left. Might eat it tomorrow, although no way to heat it up. We're supposed to be hiring a mustang tomorrow. Hrmm.
