Fill Her Up Please

| | Comments (1)

This week wasn't as crazy epic busy as the last two weeks which was kinda nice.  I *almost* had time to go back and do some cleaning!

Monday I got home and turned the heater on and nothing happened - it was already warm enough in the house!  Monday's BBT featured the first rock paper scissors lizard spock which was pretty cool :)  I also worked on the trivia night and finished Neil's jigsaw.

It's happy flower season!!

Tuesday morning I was scanning Mum's slides and found one of her in a bikini on a beach in South Australia.  I sent it to Mum and said I was finding fodder for her funeral slide show ;)  She had a laugh as well and said she wants to see the slide show before she dies :)   Not that she's dying or anything but after the sudden loss of Diana and Graham I kinda felt like it's best to be prepared, just in case and all.  Chrissie's family couldn't do a proper slide show because they didn't have access to the house to even get the photos, so they ended up using quite a lot of Mum's photos at the funeral.  Wow that got dark pretty quick.

Also on Tuesday we tried out Yarralumla Kebab's new store.  I'd never been to their original store but had heard good things about it.  I went with the guys who knew the procedure which was good, because as a newcomer it was very confusing.  Turns out you have to know that you have to "fill out a form" on the kebab wrapper to tell them what you want.  But it was a complete shemozzle and we watched people coming in and standing in the queue from either end because it was so confusing.  We even saw people leave.  They need to have instructions or they will lose business.  Meanwhile the kebab I had was as big as my head, and I didn't have any dinner that night!

Got home and the house was 20C so there was no point turning the heater on.  Finished the first draft of the trivia night and sent it to Doc for vetting.  BBT had the first mention of coitus.

Wednesday I went over to Chrissie's for dinner and we had wine and toasted Aunty Di with some merlot and had a lovely evening.  Got home and Stu hadn't bothered to turn on the heater because it was so warm.

Thursday was tv dinners instead of pizza (man-sized chicken kiev's, but not super exciting).  Again, no heater.  Watched the first half of Twilight, which I last saw on the plane to Japan in 2009.

Friday was hurty overnight so zombie day due to lack of sleep.  Met up with EffanC (who had to put down dear little Celeste due to old age) and R&F for beer and pizza.  A few tears were shed over the sweet little cat, and then a very pleasant evening.

Pot Belly pizza

Saturday I spent all freakin day on the trivia night - doing a whole lot of reworks and edits after Doc's vetting.  Didn't even set foot out of the house all day.  Finished the second draft by dinner time, had pizza (we were thinking of going out for dinner but it was cold and the sweetie just wanted pizza (let's not even go into how much pizza we've had in our "no pizza week" week - pizza last Thursday, leftovers Friday, club on Saturday, leftovers Sunday, Tuesday with C, Friday at potbelly, then Saturday with leftovers on Sunday.  That's pizza eight days out of the last eleven.  hrmmmmm!) ).  Watched Brooklyn 99 and Octopussy (seriously what insane father calls their daughter "Octopussy" as a nickname??  Thanks Ian Fleming for that weirdness).

This morning I went mountain climbing then spent all day doing the slideshow and table rounds for the trivia night.

And there might have been pizza scrolls for lunch.

After getting the first pass of the slide show done and the filler rounds done, we went to Crace for food shopping, then came home and I spent the next hour or so prepping a lasagna with the last of Kit's frozen tomatoes.  It turned out pretty well though.

Is it bed time now?

Still in Shock

| | Comments (2)

Tuesday got the shock news that Aunty Di and Uncle Graham had been murdered, apparently by their son.  I went over to Chrissie's Tuesday night and we shared some wine and just tried to process.

Wednesday night I got off the bus where Tony gets off and we walked up the hill.  I finally had a look inside the little library, which turns out to be in an old dishwasher!  Picked up three James Bond books.  Cooked tacos for dinner, which turned out quite well, but we ended up eating too much.

Taco Wednesday

Thursday and Friday I had training which was pretty intense.

Thursday I was sick of pizza (we had it on Tuesday night at Chrissie's).  We ended up having leftovers.  Hurrah.  I watched You've Got Mail.

Kettle Greek style chips

Friday had pizza (hey, it was a different sort) at Pizza Artigiana, and did some food shopping.

Pizza Artigiana puttanesca and quattro formaggio pizzas

Saturday morning it snowed.

!!

Then we headed out to the club.  I did jigsaw while the meeting was on, then we had lunch with EffanC at the Lake George Hotel.  We didn't tempt fate (they wouldn't let me) to see if they could get the crackling on the pork belly right this time.  Instead we got a meal each, but could have easily done just two meals and shared.  The servings were huge.  Most of us conceded defeat and I took all the leftovers away in containers.

Lake George rib stack

In the afternoon I measured all the windows for curtains, and did a little photo culling.  Had the fire going which made the cabin all nice and toasty warm.  Talked to the mother type person and the brother type person in the evening and had leftovers from lunch for dinner.

Anyone care to guess what this is?

There was more snow overnight, still visible this morning.

The house was cold when we got home and my feet never warmed up.  At all.  All day.  They are still cold.

Started going through a book Doc gave me a while ago, gathering questions for our next trivia night.  Other than doing some washing, that's all I managed to achieve all day.  Watched The Terminal in the afteroon/evening.  Stu cooked a dal for dinner and we watched a Veronica Mars.

Bit of a crazy intense week.

Over Saturday/Sunday last weekened I watched The Breakup.  To start with I don't know why on earth she ever got together with him when clearly he was never going to listen to her anyway.  And I'd be just as ticked off as her at his behaviour at the beginning.  But then it all got a little childish and silly.

Monday night I got up to three quarters of the way through holiday photo labelling.  I finished sorting Death Star Lego into types of pieces.  Pretty insane.

Death Star Lego 10188 sorted

Tuesday I dug out my phone microscope lens to take a photo of the spelling mistake on our $50 note.

Responsibilty

I also thought I'd been sorting Lego Death Star 75159, when in fact the set I have is 10188.  They're almost identical.  Dumb Lego, dumb.  Also started watching Bridget Jones' Diary which I haven't seen in forever.

Wednesday morning it was a little frosty.  In the evening I finished labelling day 26 of the last trip and finished watching Bridget Jones.

Frosty clover

Thursday was whiskey night!  I was sensible and only had half nips of them all ;)

Whiskey night 2019

Friday I had a lot of fun playing with a new monitoring tool we have.  And we finished the jigsaw Lachie left for us.  Had a nightmare ride on the bus sitting in front of a youth smacking gum the entire way.  Smack smack smack smack smack smack smack smack.  Urgh.  I hate people.

Had a drink with the sweetie at Shorty's.  Which was quite loud and the table next to us was full of drunk people.  hrmmm.

Shorty's

Then we went to Kimchi.  Or Chez Kimchi actually.  What's with that?  They trying to do fusion French/Korean or something?  What *was* a fusion, or rather a hot stinking mess was the menu.  It was all different styles as you went through it which doesn't work well with my brain.

Kimchi mess of a menu

Kimchi mess of a menu

Kimchi mess of a menu

And a bunch of things were labelled "spicy" but no indication of *how* spicy.  I don't mind some spice, but not really hot spice, but trying to get that information off a menu is problematic in most places (I like menus that have a chili rating on each dish).

Anyways, the condiments came out and we were hungry so scoffed these, they were pretty good.

Kimchi condiments

Next up were "Modeum-Gunmandu" - Assorted pan-fried dumplings.  Ok, but two of the ones I had were cold in the middle.

Kimchi dumplings

Then "Dolsot-kimchi bokkeum bap" - Kimchi fried rice in a hot stone bowl.  This was pretty good.

Kimchi fried rice

And finally "Snow cheese chicken" - Snow on the branches of the fried chicken! (Cheese).  This was pretty good too although I was getting too full to enjoy it as much as I would normally have ;)

We loled at the Engrish on the door on the way out

Kimchi Engrish

Saw this in the Canberra Centre and thought it looked pretty cool.

Coloured pots

Then we had a look in Muji - kinda like Japanese Ikea.

Didn't turn the heater on when we got home because there seemed little point when we were going to bed soon anyway.  But it did mean the house was *cold* overnight.  6C in the study according to the min/max thermometer!!  Yikes.

Saturday was at work all day watching graphs.  Nothing particularly exciting happened, although we did have a couple of complete mysteries we'll need to solve.

Stu made up a vegetable stock in the slow cooker, and cooked cheesy polenta for dinner.  The polenta would have been nice enough as a side, but as the only dish I was practically gagging by the end of it :(  Watched Live and Let Die in the evening.

Today was a nice quiet day.  Did a bit of housework, a bit of Lego inventorying, and food shopping.

Lego pinks and blues

Watched Bridget Jones Edge of Reason, which I didn't think I'd seen since seeing it at the movies with George in 2004, but according to the blog I watched it in 2007 as well.

Bread before dinner

Stu cooked a mushroom risotto in the slow cooker for dinner, which actually turned out pretty good.

Mushroom risotto

Watched Brooklyn 99 (first episode of season 3), then cleaned the kitchen and blogged.

Remind me to email the mother type person ..

Ok so it's been really freaking stinking hot since we got back (and apparently before we got back as well).

In January there was a week where we had 40C days for like four days in a row.  Hottest January on record.  Our cooler was going nonstop for a couple of weeks straight.

The blue periwinkle went a bit crazy while we were away.  This was about five weeks of growth.  I ripped it all out and have been keeping it down, but is going to take a lot of effort to kill..

One month of blue periwinkle

It got over 50C in the parked car on 18 January..

We had a very nice sunset on 27 January.  I was at Chrissie's and Zac called me to come look.  It was all over social media that night.

January sunset

We have had a *lot* of thunder storms.  On 30 January one went over, but most of the lightning was cloud lightning rather than ground lightning.  It flashed *a lot*.  I even captured this on my phone.

Today we had a dust storm.  I'll append a pic here when I download them.

This week I finished processing the random camera photos - rotating, renaming, resizing, geotagging, filing into days.

We've also been watching Tidying Up with Marie Kondo.  Stu read her book a year or two ago and had a brief burst of enthusiasm keeping his clothes tidy.  Yeah that didn't last.  I'm a hoarder at heart.  Sentimentally attached to everything.  Makes it hard to let stuff go...

Survived the week.  Just barely.  Stu is still sick.  This week felt very long.  Guess that's what happens when you go back for a full week after a long holiday.

Couldn't get to sleep last night.  Too damned hot (the cooler works to an extent, but isn't aircon).  And too much lightning.  I stress over it hitting the house and frying all our electronics.  So bit of a zombie today.  But did delete a whole bunch of stuff that had never been deleted cause people didn't clean up properly.

Just call me Sadie.

Felt pretty blah tonight.

Le sigh.

So this year has been *crazy* weatherwise.  Summer just would not end, having 30C days all through March.  April was pleasant.  I didn't start wearing my jumper until we got back from New Zealand.  Then in two weeks it was so cold I needed my jacket.  Two weeks from summer to winter.  We completely skipped autumn!

Had a very quiet weekend.  Other than food shopping I didn't leave the house.  Had a huge todo list and slowly worked my way through it, although probably only got two thirds of it done.

Saturday night after Homeland we watched The Goonies, which neither the sweetie and I had ever seen.  Sunday night was epic roast pork.

Epic roast pork

Hurty woke me up after 12:30 and then hung around for the next four (FOUR!!) hours :(

So I was pretty much a zombie today.  The worst was the after lunch slump where my legs were so restless I had to go for a walk because I couldn't sit.

But.

Rain!!

Hot. People.

This morning we headed out for brunch (the Scottish Restaurant! shhh!!) and then did a small bit of food shopping.

And then it was midday. Hrmmm.

Cleaned out and decluttered a couple of shelves in the kitchen which was all I achieved today.

The other day Chrissie asked if they could come by today for a swim (on account of stoopidly hot weather this weekend).  This morning Ben and Sarah if they could come by this arvo for a swim.  Then Annie asked if they could could come by this arvo for a swim.

You know me and people.

Sigh.

So I refused to organise anything.

On account of I HATE organising people.  So I didn't.  Stu organised for Ben and Sarah to come by around dentist time, and Annie from 4pm.  I never did hear from Chrissie.  So it all worked out in the end.  Had a nice swim with Ben and Sarah when they were here, and Annie brought cake for Lily's birthday and we sat around watching stoopid YouTube videos while the storm passed over (and later while all the girls were in the pool).

Even though this was like the hottest day of the year, the sweetie convinced me to turn the oven on to make these nachos - just corn chips topped with cheese and grilled for about five minutes.  Served with Stu's homemade salsa and sour cream.  Soooo good!

Nachos

Tonight we watched a new episode of The Good Place, and Discovery.  I'm thinking about going to bed, but I have this awful feeling I'm going to get insomnia tonight.  Of course going to bed early and stressing about it is almost guaranteed to make it happen.. but if I stay up later and then get it I'll just lose all that sleep I could have had.. hrmmm...

Also the cooler has been trying to keep up with the heat and doing a quite reasonable job of it..

Ok not literally.  But I did need to put a jumper on today.  And I feel like I may need an extra doona tonight.  Yipe.

Where were we?

Wednesday James was in town for work so we caught up at Bella Vista for dinner.

Friday night we watched a bit of tv, then I put up our Christmas tree.

Saturday was pretty much all just house stuff and food shopping.  Didn't have time to do any of my jigsaw but did fully dismantle the Life jigsaw back into baggies (we only dismantled it enough to get into bags on assembly day).

Life jigsaw in baggies

In the evening Anita came over and she talked all night.  Did a super yummy pork belly for dinner and got plenty of leftovers.  (I did burn the top slightly when grilling it at the end).

Pork belly

Oh did I mention I had insomnia *again* on Friday night?  This time I woke up at 3:30am and never got back to sleep.  After getting up a couple of times to eat something because I was hungry, I finally gave up around 6am.  So I had a relatively early night Saturday night because I was exhausted.

Sunday was a bit of house stuff and a fair bit of jigsaw.  I also went cherry picking.  This is the biggest crop of cherries I've ever gotten off our tree.  They don't taste super great, and the dark purple juice will stain your whole mouth purple, but hey, phytochemicals!

Cherry picking

In the evening we went over to EffanC's for cheese for dinner (yumm ;) ) and to watch The Room.  Yes, that one.  Ok I'd never heard of it, but everyone said it was supposed to be like one of the worst films ever made.  They certainly weren't wrong.  It was terrible.  It was so terrible it was *hilarious*.  Fun times :)

Tired Eyes

| | Comments (0)

Crazy weather today.  It was fine this morning.  At lunch time it was still fine, but the ground was all wet.  After work it was raining, but by the time we got home it there wasn't a cloud in the sky and the moon was out.  And then it started raining again.

Tonight by the time we'd gotten home, done my washing, had dinner, watched the obligatory episode of Voyager, then Survivor, scraped some grout in the bathroom and finished labelling the first day of photos of our last trip, it's suddenly 10pm.

And my eyes are tired.

I hate Mondays.

Weekendy Bits

Friday night we got pizza to celebrate the sweetie's birthday and watched the new Total Recall.  Putting aside the ridiculous issue of a transport system that can traverse the earth's core in 17 minutes, it was basically just a massive CGI fest that had a lot of nods to the original but never quite achieved the same level of awesomeness.  I liked the "two weeks" scene, that was pretty funny.  Otherwise it was pretty average.

Saturday morning hurty kept me awake for an hour or so in the early morning so had a lazy start.  Other than cleaning, we went to Bunnings to get a grout saw and more grout, and the markets to top up our food supplies.  In the afternoon I had a couple of goes at scraping grout, but it's pretty tedious.

Saturday evening were all set for a quiet night of watching videos, but then Serena invited herself over, then Kit came up, and Pete came over as well.  So went and bought some cheese and crackers and cooked some sausages and had a mini party.

Today I did more grout scraping in little bursts.  I also started actually labelling holiday photos.  Maybe I'll get all my photos labelled before I cark it..  hmm yeah right!

Tonight the sweetie cooked pork larb for dinner, and we watched Voyager (we're over half way through season five), and Survivor.  Also it seems that Chromecast will keep on casting, even when everything it's attached to is off.  Hurrah.  It had been going all night and all day, and we didn't notice til we went to play Voyager.  Whoops.

The weather was a bit crazy today.  At one point it was actually quite a bit warmer outside than in, so opened up the house for a while.

Shutdown

Monday would have begun our week off.  Except it wasn't really a week off for us.  Well not that we could fully relax anyway.  But, I did get stuck into the house work I wanted to do.  Monday I cleaned out the spare room cupboard and organised everything in there.  Had sausages for dinner.

Tuesday I cleaned out most of our bedroom cupboard, although we still didn't find Stu's fitbit.  Kit cooked us some ribs on the bbq for lunch which was nice.  In the afternoon I cleaned out the ensuite cupboard.  Chris and Zac came up for a swim, then Chris Bell came over as well.  With Dumpling Inn apparently closed for the break, we did a big pickup from Chong Co instead.

Wednesday I cleaned out one of the kitchen cupboards which had been annoying me for a while.  That one is a lot more organised now.  Cooked up some pasta for dinner, and we watched Wag the Dog, which seemed a bit far fetched for me.

Thursday morning I didn't really get anything useful done.  Went out during the day to Bunnings then to the chemist and had lunch, and finally our food shopping.  Did a bit of sorting of stuff in the afternoon.  Mum took us to the Labor Club for dinner with Chris and Zac.  Had a swim in the pool afterwards.

Overnight I woke up at around dentist time and couldn't get back to sleep til around 5am because I was just too hot.  The cooler was working really well before Christmas, but this entire week has been stoopidly humid which means the cooler is pretty much useless.  No fair.

So Friday was a slow start.  Mum went home, then got stuck into sorting the year's receipts and other such things.  In the evening Ben and Serena came over for a swim, and we got pizza for dinner then chatted for a while.

And so now we're up to the last day of the year.  I still have a few more bits and pieces I need to blog today.  There's *heaps* of stuff on my todo list that I wanted to get done this week but couldn't because it was too hard to concentrate.  But at least I have another couple of days left which I might be able to get some of it done.  The ftp backup of my blog is *still* going :/  I did manage to do an sql dump of it all though which was good.  123mb, although a huge chunk of that is the search terms that people use on the sidebar.  Go figure.  Might see if I can delete some of that.

Edit:  deleted nearly nine years of activity history, and the sql dump was cut down to 25mb :)

Not Home

So it feels like I haven't been home in days.

Saturday work most of the day, a bit of touristing, and dinner was salmon at Chrissie's.  Today out all day on a massive photo project which involved thirteen locations, 261 photos and 14000+ steps.  So tonight I collapsed with a couple of beers, some chicken kiev, and a bit of Survivor.

Oh, it rained a little bit on Friday night.

Snow

It snowed in Canberra last week.  I woke up (a zombie due to lack of sleep) and walked out into the kitchen and thought it was a super heavy frost before realising it was snow.  That woke me up somewhat!

Then last night we had the warmest overnight July night temperature in recorded history.  Craziness.

Tonight I only geotagged some of day 24's photos, and didn't do any fish tank rescues, but did attack the piles of crap next to my desk.  Still a long way to go.

Spine

| | Comments (0)

My lower back has been hurting a lot today :(  Meant today I hardly achieved anything, other than a bit of work on the trivia night.

But stepping back a bit.

Thursday I *finally* got another one of my firewalls in and working.  Not really any dramas to sort out afterwards which was good.

Friday the sweetie took me to Smoque for dinner, and then we had a quiet night and went to bed at 10:30.  But was too hot and uncomfortable to get to sleep.  Until 4am :(:(:(:(  I'm thoroughly sick of all this hot weather :(:(

Smoque wings

Saturday Stu had to go to the club for a committee meeting, and we spent much of the afternoon in the pool which was nice.  EffanC came over for a while last night and we watched random things on YouTube.

Today was just discomfort from my spine.  Watched an interesting documentary on the Last Days in Vietnam tonight which was really good.

Hot Zombie Day

| | Comments (0)

Didn't get to sleep til quite late.  Woke up at 5am.  Got maybe half an hour more sleep after that.  Was a zombie most of the morning.

Did a whole heap of data entry today - putting a stack of device information into my whizz-bang database.

Tonight just suffered in the heat.

Dear summer: it's autumn now.  Go away!!!

Stinkin' Hot

| | Comments (1)

I'm completely sick of this heat.  Woke up at 3:20 and couldn't get back to sleep.  Maybe got another hour or two's sleep.  Zombie day today.

Tonight was beer and pool.  And Chrissie and pool.

Still Hot

| | Comments (0)

Tonight consisted of beer, pool, Chrissie over for dinner, pool, Kit and Ben over for pool, and now bed time.

Dear summer: please piss off now.  Seriously.

Hot

| | Comments (0)

It's too damned hot.  Couldn't sleep last night.  Too hot.

Washed my hair tonight.  Maybe a wet head will help keep my temperature down for a while ..

So what else happened.

Saturday night we picked up EffanC and went to Scott's place.  We were very late getting there.  It would have been a nice night, except I was overheating and the music was turned up to a level that killed my enthusiam to talk loudly over it.  Ended up being quite late home too.  At least we had a very nice salad for dinner that C made (and lots of yummy cheese!).  Had a swim when we got home to cool off.

Sunday I was pretty tired on account of not getting enough sleep.  Didn't get a whole lot done.  The heat was too miserable-making.  Did manage to do food shopping.  Kit came over briefly to dip her feet in the pool.  Had salmon and salad for dinner.

George is a spud

But last night I couldn't get to sleep *forever* - too damned hot, even with the fan going at full speed.  Dear summer, it's the middle of February, feel free to bugger off and bother someone else.  Felt like a complete zombie today and all the stoopid got to me and made me grumpy.  Also panicking slightly about my firewall project and getting it done in time.  Even our resident expert is not sure what is going on.  We did make one of them work nicely today though, so just need to figure out what *that* means.

Tonight cooked up a bunch of stuff for dinners/lunches during the week.
