Spring

| | Comments (0)

Yeah so spring is nearly over.  And I've been accumulating photos to post for months, because I'm a slacker.  Here's a bunch of photos celebrating spring.

Pelicans come inland to breed.  I couldn't see this one's partner though.

Dad always called these things swanlings.  Because he was weird.  And I call them that too.  Because I'm weird.

After our Queensland trip I started bringing my lunch into work most days so I could control my sodium intake.  But that left me with the problem of not getting out and about for a bit of a walk.  So for quite a while, Aquila and I were doing Ingress missions to get some exercise.  We ran out of local missions though, so that's fallen by the wayside a little (and me being off sick for a week certainly didn't help).
This was taken on one of the mission days.

Saw these mystery flowers on a walk one morning.  No idea what they are.  Cause I'm dumb.

More mystery flowers.  These things are from bulbs and pop up in our yard every spring.  No idea what they are.  Cause I'm dumb.

Usually we associate storms with summer, but we've had more than our fair share of thunderstorms this spring

Sunflower seedling.  It's quite a bit bigger than that now.

These things only flower for like a *day*, but the plant keeps on pumping out new flowers for several weeks.  They're weeds around our yard, but I can't bring myself to pull them out.

Can you believe these photos are taken on a *phone* ???

I'm pretty sure I've never seen these flowers in our yard before this year, so no idea where they came from.  Or what they are.  Cause I'm dumb.

I do like azaleas but I think they take too much water and as such have no place in Canberra.

Storm

Didn't get to sleep til well after midnight last night.

Then the storm woke us up at 5:20 when the power tripped.  I didn't really get back to sleep after that, so it was a bit of a zombie day.

But it was ok, because nothing too much was happening.  I had ~280 emails, but around 200 I could file or delete immediately.

We had lunch at Outback Jack's, and I shared a wings/ribs platter with someone, so I didn't feel stuffed which was good.

This afternoon I went and visited a 12 hour old duckling (well it was trying to break through its shell for 36 hours, so don't know when you start counting).  So cute.  And so are the chickies who can flutter now.

Weird day today.  Next to no sleep, maybe a couple of hours.  Power tripped during the storm.  Got home and reset everything.  Then everything turned off again.  Bit of a bang.  Looked out the window to a little plume of smoke rising into the sky.  Things don't work when people let the smoke out.  So figured out how to open the garage door manually and headed to ANU with Theatre-Buddy-Dave to see Fiddler on the Roof which we'd seen advertised at work.  It was a pretty good production and my legs weren't even too restless.  Parking at ANU is mental.  Was glad I was super early getting out of the house, cause otherwise I would have been super late.. Power wasn't off for too long which was good.  Was half expecting it to still be off.  So that was good.

Eighteen months ago today we explored the Scottish Highlands north and west of Fort William.

Depressing day today.

So much so that even with a fridge full of healthy food we ordered pizza.  And waited over an hour and a half for Crust to deliver it.  Shoulda gotten Dominos.

At least three brownouts tonight.  Stoopid storms.  We need to replace the batteries in our UPS.

And saw this bunny hopping around the front yard.  Stu didn't believe me, he said it was a rat.  I thought so too until I saw it hopping.

Wherein proving my camera has better eyesight than me - it was practically invisible where it was.

Super tired from getting to bed too late too often this week.  No photos to blog.  Crazy crazy crazy at work.. one disaster after another so things are getting left by the wayside :/

Change came through Canberra tonight which brought relief in temperatures.

But poor fricken Queensland.  No sooner do they get past the worst of the floods when they get hit with cyclone Yasi!  At least they're about to be .. it's still off the coast at the moment..

But that image gives you no idea of the scale of this thing.  Check it out if it was superimposed on other parts of the world:

Gah!

Hold on tight Queensland!  We're thinking of you..

Part 3 of the Coppins Crossing series.  Here's some of the clouds from the incoming storm...

All but the very last one are just regular photos, no HDR.  The last one is HDR on the iPhone.

The storm brought some pretty impressive hail to Canberra's southern suburbs, although only rain to the northern suburbs.

Had an ok Friday today.  Got some stuff done and may have even had a win (will find out next week if we did or not).

This will be part one I think.. will give me material for another blog entry or two that way ;)

DaveO the other day asked if I'd been out to Coppins Crossing, because the bridge was damaged and could make a good photo-op.

Sure enough, it was a bit of a mess...

Saw this cute little birdie too.. no idea what it is..  I might have sent it into the RiotACT but they're getting much better bird pics so probably won't bother (besides this is almost full pixels).

I've never photographed lightning before.  I didn't really succeed tonight either.  Out of 150-odd photos, I only got two with lightning in them ..   Of course it didn't help that most of the action was to the north of us, but our only really safe view is to the south.  I was on the balcony for a while until a bolt 300m away changed my mind..  Of course I saw plenty of stuff either in between photos or while my camera was "processing" .. wonder if I can turn that off..
