Fifty-one years ago this weekend the parental type people came down to Canberra to celebrate the opening of the Canberra Youth Hostel.

Mum took two photos up Black Mountain - one from the top, and one from the lookout part way up.  Unfortunately we'll be busy on the weekend so I won't be able to get the fifty-one year recreation, so you'll have to make do with my photos from 2016.

From part way up..

I love how Parkes Way just isn't there in 1968, and there seems to be a lot more trees around now..

So kapgar posted some pics from 1995 the other day and challenged the net to do the same.

So here's one of mine with a comparison to current day.

The first was taken at my boyfriend at the time (Hao's) 21st birthday in Melbourne in 1995.

The second was taken at my neighbour at the time (Kit's) graduation day in Melbourne in 2018.

Yes.  That is actually the same blouse.

Como Hotel Fire

Twenty years ago this morning we were woken up by siren after siren screaming through our suburb at something like three in the morning.  We got up and looked out the front windows and saw orange in the sky north of us.  We thought it might have been the Como Primary School.  We got dressed and headed into the night.  As it turns out, it was the historic Como Hotel engulfed in flames.  Built in 1878, destroyed 3 November 1996, and rebuilt five years later keeping the original brickwork and facades.

Dark

Another mostly cleaning day today.  And looking at things and finding more things that *need* to be cleaned, cause I can't help myself.

Watched some Homeland tonight and then Zero Dark Thirty.  It's a bit choppy and slow to start with, but picks up towards the end.  Very long.  But we both liked it.

And I've been freaking out about this photo I scanned yesterday, taken almost exactly thirty years ago..

Anzac Day Weekend

| | Comments (0)

Generally had a quiet weekend.  Stu was still sick (yeah two long weekends and three days leave in between and he was sick the entire time :( ).

Friday I did a bit of house cleaning and watched Four Weddings and a Funeral in the afternoon.  I might have also made some Anzac Biscuits.

Saturday we celebrated our anniversary by going out for brunch at Pulp Kitchen.

I put dinner on to slow cook (beef stew nommm).  Didn't do much at all in the afternoon (that I can remember).

Enjoyed our dinner and watched Twister together in the evening.

Sunday I did a bit of stuff around the house then went to the War Memorial to see the model of Gallipoli, except the whole section is undergoing a big renovation at the moment til the end of the year :(  So had a bit of a wander around and had a play with Dad's camera there.

Thirty years ago today, we went up Sydney Tower.  Here's Mum's scanned photos, along with some of mine from 2011 for comparison.  The view south is probably the most dramatically different!
