So Saturday for lunch I had some leftover honey mustard chicken that I'd cooked during the week.  And forgotten to put in the fridge that night.  The kitchen stays pretty cold in this house, but I still tempted fate and had it for lunch on Saturday.  Sunday morning about 1am my bowels weren't too happy with me, and it was *probably* that.  And other than not being about to get back to sleep for HOURS, I was fine.

Stu went to work (again!) and I grouted the other half of the shower.

Then some photo stuff and started a new Wasgij jigsaw.

Late in the afternoon Kit and Pete invited me down for a drink and to soak in the last of the afternoon sun.  Then played a few games, then came home for an early night.

Tonight I continued labelling the first day in Shanghai from our trip last year.  Made super difficult because China offsets its street maps from its satellite maps for "security" reasons by several hundred metres or so.  Silly really.

Where were we?  A week and a half ago..

Friday afternoon I took an early mark from work and came home and watched The Lion King while finishing off that section of the jigsaw.

Saturday was alternating between housework, photo labelling and photo filing.

Sunday Stu went to work; Chrissie came over and we grouted one of the walls in the shower.  Also photo labelling.

Early this week I finished labelling my New Zealand photos - only took two months! (normally it takes years).  I also calculated that if I label 500 photos a week it'll take me about five years to label all my holiday photos.  Doable I think..

Wednesday I had to come home so Rheem could look at the broken valve on the hot water tank (remember I noticed it was broken one year and twelve days after the tank was installed).  The guy took one look and asked "is that all that's wrong?" heh.  Two minute job to put a new valve on (and he left me a spare in case it happens again).  *Hopefully* they don't charge me for the callout, on account of it's the second thing to go wrong with that heater in its first year.

Friday I went over to Chrissie's for gozleme for dinner.  We were going to watch a Lego movie but it got too late.

And yesterday was pretty must just cleaning and tidying the house all day, on account of having all of Stu's family over for dinner.  It was all very nice, except for Violet being super stressful jumping all over everything and everyone and touching and poking everything. Had lots of pizza and watched Austen Powers.

And so ends the first half of the year.

Where were we?

Friday night went over to Chrissie's for a roast chicken dinner and lemon delicious for dessert which was lovely.  I can't believe Nathan is four months old already.. I've barely seen him!  I'm such a slack friend...

Nathan four months

Afterwards we were invited over to R&F's for supper which was nice as well.

Scott brought these.  Can't remember what they were called, but they had little syringes of frangelico you injected into them.

Saturday I hopped in the car and headed for Sydney.  Made it in time for lunch at the New Golden Emperor Chinese Restaurant in Kirrawee for Mum's birthday lunch.  It was pretty average.  You know you're in a western Chinese restaurant when you don't even get chopsticks.  Still, the $8.30 lunch special which included chicken and corn soup was pretty good value and the serving sizes were huge.

New Golden Emperor chicken and corn soup

The other Karen and I got the $9.30 satay chicken and satay vegetables and mixed the two to get a better mix of meat/vegetables.  This is just the chicken dish.

After lunch we went back to Mum's and Aunty Di and Uncle Graham (not my uncle/aunty) and June came over as well and we had a couple of games of Five Crowns which was a bit of fun.

Mum and her cards

Everyone left around 5pm and we were like "now what?".  So we went to Vivid.  As you do :)  I'll put pics for that in a separate post.  It was pretty crowded and the sweetie would have hated every second of it, but it was good to go be a tourist in Sydney again and get photos of pretty lights.

Sunday morning we went to church, where there were cakes for Mum and Elizabeth's birthdays.

Mum and her cake

Then headed an hour and a quarter across the other side of Sydney to Uncle Ken and Jeanine's place for lunch to celebrate Ken's birthday.  Various members of Ken and Jeanine's extended families were there - over twenty people outside for lunch!

All the news reports and locals (except Ken) were complaining about how freezing it was, but it was an absolutely glorious day and NOT cold ;)

Then we went back to Mum's and I came home.

Monday I was pretty depressed because I didn't get any down/home time over the weekend.  It's only Wednesday but this week has felt *very* long :(

Thursday night Hao was in town so we caught up for dinner.  Went to Alice's for dinner, and Koko Black for dessert.  Good to see him again, this time only six years since I saw him last.

Friday night was Enterprise (we're into season three now) followed by Flying High.  Love that movie hehe.  Then a bit of Cards Against Humanity with Kit and Pete.  Because there was only three of us, after a few rounds we introduced a "dummy hand" - putting cards at random into the mix to give more options to choose from.  For a while the dummy hand was doing better than me!  Silly really!

Saturday Stu had an appointment in town in the morning so I went in with him.  Dropped off a huge bag of used coffee pods, and got a bit annoyed because they'd moved and I had to carry the heavy bag further.  Then did a few Ingress missions.  Then bought a new jigsaw with the gift voucher Ben S had given me a while back.  Came home and organised some stuff then started the next section of the Disney Behemoth jigsaw.  The bag I pulled out at random was The Lion King.  Dinner was a complete mashup of pretty much all the leftovers left in the house.  A very random meal but it least it got rid of most stuff in the fridge.  In the evening watched Enterprise, Homeland and Trumbo, a movie about a Hollywood screenwriter who was a member of the Communist Party and had to work under false names due to being blacklisted.  We quite enjoyed it.

Today I woke up with a bit of a sore throat.  Hope I'm not getting sick.  Have been alternating between computer stuff, house stuff and jigsaw.

More of that

Thursday night I got an alert for a three star passing of the space station, so went out with Lachie, followed by Jim and Connor.  They were all suitably excited to see it fly over :)

Friday night the sweetie had an eye appointment after work so we had dinner at Happy's.  Headed to the swim night after that, followed by nibbles and soup at EffanC's.

Saturday was Junee.

Sunday I tried to get through some of my todo list but didn't make very good progress.  Went to EffanC's for leftover nibbles and soup and we watched Fight Club, which I hadn't seen for a very very long time.

The other weekend I made Not Quite Nigella's Asian style beef cheeks again.  If anything they have *too much* flavour haha!  This time I did it on the stove so I could turn it up to high at the end to reduce it.  It stays pretty watery in the slow cooker.

This is the ingredients.  Two packs of beef cheeks from Coles, which I chopped into quarters and browned, but you don't have to do that.  An onion, garlic, a squirt of ginger paste (that didn't kill us after the great fridge power loss of 2018), half a cup of orange juice, half a cup of light soy sauce, a cup of water, a quarter cup of Shaoxing wine (I used dry cherry instead), peel of half an orange, chili to taste, and I used a good dose of Chinese five spice instead of star anise.

Beef cheeks ingredients

Cook on low for a few hours

Near the end add two tablespoons of sugar and two tablespoons of dark soy sauce, turn up the heat and reduce the sauce.

We got invited out with EffanC that night so had to package up all of it, although it was very tempting to scoff some of it anyway!!

Beef cheeks

And speaking of beef cheeks.  On Wednesday night Pete convinced Kit to go out for dinner for her birthday, so we tagged along.  We went to The George for dinner, and I ended up having beef cheeks to compare them with mine.  Quite different flavours but still very tasty and fall apart tender.

Wednesday night I ran another trivia night.  This was the one we were meant to run in March but had to cancel due to lack of interest.  This time we had twelve tables, so turned out to be a pretty good night.

On Thursday night I went down to Kit's after dinner, and we ended up playing a travel version of Trivial Pursuit which was a bit of fun (you can "buzz in" to have a go at answering the question if the person getting the question doesn't answer it right).  I won the first game fairly quickly but took a lot longer to win the second game because they kept stealing my cards :)

Sunday morning up bright and early and walked up Black Mountain with Cath and Fiona and Heather.  12000 steps by 10:30am, but then I only did about 1500 for the rest of the day.

Tried to get stuff done for the rest of the day, but didn't get very much done.

In the evening met up with EffanC for dinner at the Labor Club.

Monday was plugging away at the todo list.

Tonight I tried to deal with the "you have a tax debt" notice I got posted recently.  Turns out the tax office couldn't be arsed sending paper notifications of tax bills, so all I've gotten is cryptic "you've got mail" messages from mygov and finally a posted overdue notice.  I couldn't find pdfs of my payg tax bills, just a summary page.  Absolutely ridiculous.  I was filled with rage at how useless ATO and their website is.  Not happy Jan!!

In a strange twist of fate, the sweetie and I were in both Australia and New Zealand on Anzac Day - had a quick hop across the ditch to celebrate our tenth wedding anniversary - making the most of the last of the Singapore Airlines direct flights to Wellington - in fact our flight back was the second last one.

Since we've been back I've been meaning to blog, but I'm a slacker.  I wanted to rant about the poor customer service from Netflix, and praise the fantastic customer service from Willow.  I've been busy at work but not crazy busy, in fact had time to clean things this week which was nice.

A bunch of us ended up at Rob and Fiona's last night for chilli which was nice (and not tooo spicy!), and I inflicted them with not just our New Zealand slide show, but Japan 2009, Hong Kong 2013 and East Asia 2017.  Oops.  :)

I've processed all my New Zealand photos (renamed, resized and geotagged).  And other than food shopping that's about all I've managed to achieve this weekend.  Well that and cooking half the afternoon.  Cauliflower bake and teriyaki chicken for dinner, and cheese balls for snacks.

Fondue!

Last week Aunty Di and Uncle Graham came down to visit Chrissie, so I went over and we had a fondue night which was a lot of fun.

We did a cheese one that could have been a tad less runny but was still good

And a chocolate one (with cointreau) that Chrissie wasn't as fond of (next time we'll use a different liqueur)

Pizzas and Photos

Sunday was a pretty quiet day.  We were going to go food shopping but then the sweetie got a migraine.  In the evening David dropped in, and we went over to Scott's with various others for home made pizzas in his pizza oven.  That was a bit of fun.

Crazy busy at work at the moment.

And when I'm not busy at work I'm busy doing things like Lego sorting and photo labelling.  I've been powering through labelling our East Asia holiday photos.

On a whim tonight I wanted to see any photos of Queen Mary 2 and Quantum of the Seas side by side to compare the height of their passenger decks above sea level (after a woman went overboard on a cruise on the Pacific Dawn the other week) and found this!

What's so exciting about that?  Well, I was there!  Look!  Can you see me? :)

I was actually on our balcony watching proceedings and watching the drone buzzing around the ship and wondering if I'd ever see the footage (I looked on Youtube for ages).  And just like that I found it :)

This was the drone:

Bit of a crazy week.

Thursday after drinks the sweetie and I tried out Yat Bun Tong for dinner.  We got some xiao long bao and other dumplings and shallot cake which were all nice enough.

Friday we met up with Damien and Amanda at the Dickson Dumpling House, for more xiao long bao, more dumplings and a shredded duck and noodle dish and a tofu dish (where I bit into a piece of chili and it *hurt*).

Friday night I could. not. get. to. sleep.  Lay in bed for three hours before finally falling into a restless sleep.

So Saturday I was a complete zombie.  Couldn't concentrate on anything and my eyes were aching all day.  So I did what any sensible person would do - had a couple of glasses of wine and went to bed early.  Got nearly nine hours sleep and feel a *lot* better today!

Butt cheeks?

Had some security training this week, which was ok, aside from not really actually learning anything, but they thought it would be a good idea to remind us of all this stuff anyway.  Got kicked out of the building early on Friday so went and had a drink with Neil at the Labor Club, which we haven't done in forever.  The training course was catered, so dinner Friday night was leftover wraps (I won't mention that we had pizza *twice* this week hrmmm!! - on Tuesday because Stu had had a crap day and then on Thursday because Kit bribed him to get him to come down and offer some advice on an assignment she was working on).

Saturday was mostly just sorting Vic's Lego (it's not the sorting that's taking the time, it's checking Every. Damned. Piece. for fake ones).  I did pop out to get a UVB light bulb and basking globe for Stumpy.  He'd had a heat lamp at Chrissie's but no UV, so wondering if that's why he's been off his food in recent months.  In the afternoon I slow cooked Lorraine's Asian Style Beef Cheeks which were fricken awesome (and pretty healthy except for all the soy sauce which won't do my blood pressure any favours).  I still think I may need to add some cornflour to the sauce to thicken it, otherwise do it on the stove so can turn up the heat at the end to reduce the liquid down.  We also watched Return of the King, which took All. Night. to get through.  Even though we started only just after 6pm we didn't get to bed til after 11pm.

Exhausted

Crazy busy week this week.  Short, but exhausting.  And no chance to relax this weekend, way too much to do.

Had lunch with the Chrises and Glenda today which was nice, although I ate too much and was struggling to stay awake.  Had a late dinner and now going to collapse into bed.

Long Weekend

| | Comments (0)

So relatively nice long weekend.  Did a lot of Lego sorting (every day), a bit of food shopping (Saturday), finally cracked 8192 on 2048 (Saturday), Ben over for roast pork (Saturday), some cooking (caramel slice and beef stew on Sunday morning), killifish study group meeting at Serkan's and then dropped off some stuff at Stu's and the kids (Sunday), saw the balloons (Monday), a Bunnings run (Monday), a couple of episodes of Homeland, several episodes of Enterprise and about fifteen episodes of The Addams Family.  I was hoping to do a bit of shower grouting, but that wasn't to be.  But I did get some work done on the trivia night (but again, not as much as I'd hoped).

Another day of getting things done.. well, and doing crap for other people as well hehe.

Went down to Kit's for dinner (pizza was calling) and a couple of drinks and now an early night.

Last night made pizzas and got a lot less carbs in the process.  Then had a couple of drinks at Kit's cause we haven't seen them in ages.

Super busy day today.  Watched some Enterprise and had leftover chicken for dinner.  Then Lego sorting in front of Who Framed Roger Rabbit, which David gave me years ago for a birthday present (in 2003!).

Monday

Quiet day.  Was still sad from the news of last night.  Had lunch with the sweetie which was nice.

Tonight was just Monday usual crap, and then took Chrissie's car back.

An hour of Lego while watching Addams Family, then bed time..
