One Month On

| | Comments (0)

It was four weeks ago last night I had my appendix out.  Still doing all right.  Still random stabby pains all over my abdomen though.

Meanwhile.

Wednesday a week and a bit ago we met up with EffanC for dinner at Malaysian Chapter.  They have a new menu but didn't put any effort at all into its presentation, it's just bits of paper in dodgy old sheet protectors.

Thursday was the usual pizza.

Friday the sweetie and I had sushi in town and watched the new Ghostbusters.  It's rated quite poorly on IMDB, but I thought it was a bit of nonsensical fun.  Kit and Pete came up for Kit's brother's wedding, so I gave them the keys during the day but we didn't see them at all Friday night.

Saturday Stu went off for a war game with Tom and Damien and I had a quiet morning. Kit and Pete surfaced well after lunch, possibly still over the limit, so I drove Kit to pick up her mum and took them to Kingston so Kit could try on wedding dresses.  In the evening Pete and Leisa were having a combined birthday thing at the Old Canberra Inn, so I drove them to that as well.  Kit still wasn't hungry so I suggested splitting a schnitty, as I don't like huge pub sized servings either.  Worked great, although Kit ate so little of it I ended up having most of it anyway hehe.  Inflicted them with our slide show.  Still too big, at 729 photos.  Still needs more culling.

Sunday Kit and Pete went home.  I just had a quiet day doing stuff.  Finished watching the Stepford Wives which I'd last seen in 2006 and started watching the day before.  We did some food shopping, and watched Fuller House and Discovery in the evening.

Monday I got up a bit early and went and saw the balloons.  Neil was operating the Square this year and not cooking.  Saw the beagle, mostly its butt.  Then came home.  Had a quiet but productive day.  Even pulled a whole heap of crap out of the spare room.  Including a huge pile to take to the Green Shed.  So can move in there again now, but still need to do a lot of organising.

Tuesday I bought some ten litre plastic boxes to store shoes that don't get used very often.  They stack nicely and are to replace cardboard shoeboxes that silverfish eat.  Trying to get rid of as much cardboard in the house as I can.  Had Turkish for dinner and watched Homeland.

Wednesday I got some more plastic tubs for shoes because I didn't have quite enough.  In the evening I prepped a big batch of steak/bacon/onion/garlic/mushrooms for the weekend.

Thursday was just MacGyver, but no pizza because we'd already had takeaway one night this week.

So there we are, all caught up.  Nothing particularly exciting in there.

Sydney Weekend

| | Comments (1)

Back on 8 February I headed up to Sydney to catch up with Mum for Christmas.  Just a few weeks late haha.

Drove up Friday evening (after having a random day off which was nice) and looked at some of Mum's holiday photo slide shows.

On Saturday morning we headed into The Entertainment Quarter for the latest Ryan McNaught Lego exhibition - Lego Cities.  We took the train to Central and a bus down Anzac Parade (where I think it's amusing they're putting light rail back in after it being gone for so long).

Central Station

Central Station

Except the Entertainment Quarter is huge and there was literally no information whatsover on the tickets about where to go.  Lucky we were early because we walked around for ages, and had to ask two separate people where it was.  Pathetic event management.

I'll leave the Lego to a separate post.

So we were done by 11am but it was a case of "now what?".  It was such a lovely day I didn't want to just go back to Mum's and do nothing.  We were in Sydney for heavens' sake!  Even if we just took a Manly Ferry and back it'd be *something*.  But then I thought, you know I've never taken the ferry to Parramatta before.  So we hopped on a bus to Circular Quay, topped my Opal Card, and hopped on a River Cat.  I decided not to sit outside in the sun (I came for a Lego show, so no hat, sunscreen or sunglasses, and did get ripped off by the pharmacy at Circular Quay just to get some sunscreen), so got seats on the left, fortunately the windows open!

I'll leave the ferry trip to a separate post.

On the way Mum called Pam and asked if she'd like to catch up for lunch (it was about 13:30 by this point).  So she met us at the ferry terminal.  Parramatta had been hit hard by the storm the previous night, and there were a lot of downed trees.  Pam's place (which is brand new, and they are the first tenants in the place) got heaps of water from leaky windows.  Note to self: don't buy an apartment in any new building until the building industry can get their act together - shoddy work is the norm on anything built since the building deregulation thirty years ago or whenever it was).

Tree blown down in storm

We wandered up to Church Street to look for some lunch (it's after 14:00 by this point).  I stipulated it needed to be a *light* lunch as I was going out for dinner.  So we ended up at Volcanos Steakhouse, where we thought we'd get a few starters and call it a day.  Except their starters were HUGE.  And then Pam said she doesn't eat cheese, after the things Mum and I ordered had cheese.  I wish she'd said that before.  #grunt.  If I'd known all that I wouldn't have got any more than two dishes, tops.  They were pretty good though!

Volcanos Parramatta Mozarella Sticks

Volcanos Parramatta Wedges

Volcanos Parramatta Cheesy Garlic Bread

After eating way too much, we headed for the station (the ferry is nice and all but it takes like an hour and a half).

Caught an inter-urban back to Central, and another train back to Mum's.

I had twenty minutes, which gave me just enough time to have a shower, then head out again.

Met up with Daniel and Fi at Redfern station and we walked down to the Duck Inn Restaurant and Pub.  I started with a delicious Grifter watermelon pilsner (Serpent's Kiss) that was perfect for a humid Sydney summer evening, and had one other that it seems I didn't check in, so don't remember which.  Could have been the Mismatch Lager, but not sure.

Duck Inn Beers

Because I had such a big late lunch, I was happy with just starters again.  And Daniel and Fi had spent the day down at Wollongong with Daniel's parents so didn't feel like too much either so that worked out.  And they all had duck in them!

Starting with confit duck loaded fries with fig, burgundy, thyme mayo, liquid gruyere cheese and scallions, which was amazing

Duck Inn loaded fries

And also steamed bao buns with shredded five spice duck, pickled carrots and daikon, coriander, chili and hoisin sauce, also amazing, and peking duck spring rolls served with micro herbs and soy infusion dripping sauce.

Duck Inn bao rolls and spring rolls

Was a lovely evening catching up with those guys.  I owe them a beer though!

Sunday morning I went to church with Mum, hoping to see the Cartans, as they're in their nineties now and times to see them may be limited..  But they weren't there.

So then headed off to Luc and Lizzi's to do a penultimate donut photo with Ryan, and ended up staying for lunch which was lovely.

Then headed for home.  I took a slight detour to go see Cordeaux Dam.  Again you can drive right up to it which is nice.

I'll leave the dam to a separate post.

And finally home.

Thursday morning I took the sticky tape off the two smaller incisions.  I was expecting a scabby mess, but no it all came off cleanly and there was just a little red line left underneath.  Put on trackie daks, which was first time I'd been out of pyjama bottoms since I got home.

Thursday night I got sick of lying on my back and sides and attempted sleeping on my stomach, but it still hurt a bit too much.

Friday morning I took the sticky tape off the larger incision.  This tape hurt more to get off, but again, the incision was clean.

Friday evening Jenn came over and Stu ordered a LOT of Turkish food and we had that and chatted and had on the second draft of the slide show - still way too long at 900 photos (but down from the 1300 of the first draft).  Very annoyingly, I'd put a whole heap of heat mats down on the table, but there was so much food it ended up sitting on the table, and did a heap of heat damage to the surface of the table.  It's really obvious in three places.  Not happy Jan!!

Friday night I was able to sleep on my belly more comfortably.

Saturday was approaching normality (still need to be careful) but had quite a productive day Getting Things Done.

In the evening we watched Discovery, and Sherlock Holmes (the Robert Downey Jr version).  It wasn't too bad, altho some of my gripes ("tomorrow" actually being the day after, a boat that size being able to sink in the Thames, and popping up from the Palace of Westminster at Tower Bridge) all made their way into the IMDB goofs page heh.

Last night the entrance smoke detector went off at 3:30 for no good reason.  We took it down and I stayed awake for like an hour but no smoke, so will need to investigate that today (could have been dust stirred up by all the wind - the kitchen bench was all gritty yesterday, or maybe a spider).  Edit: battery was at 7.5 Volts, so think it's probably worth changing the battery.

Today I'm in jeans for the first time in over a week.  Seems to be doing ok.

Saturday night Fiona made quite a nice chicken soup for dinner, they drank a whole lot of my wine, and we watched Kung Fu Panda.

Sunday Stu and Fiona went off to the bus depot markets for the morning.  In the afternoon Stu went to Serkan's to trade fish, and Fiona went for a wander.  So I prepared dinner while it was peace and quiet.

Did I mention that EVERYONE AROUND ME WAS SICK??  Stu had been sniffling all week but it got worse on the weekend.  And Fiona had the tail end of a cold and/or tonsilitus so I spent the entire weekend in a state of tension and wishing everyone WOULD STAY OUT OF MY AIR.  Because the absolute last thing you want when you've had abdominal surgery is a cough.  Not impressed.

In the evening they drank a whole lot more of my wine and we had roast pork for dinner and watched Kung Fu Panda 2.

Monday returned to peace and quiet and I tidied the house (very slowly and gently) in between stuff on Netflix.  By the end of the day I felt a whole lot better.

Watched Discovery in the evening.

Still can't sleep on my belly, and in fact have been having a bit of trouble actually getting to sleep - probably because I'm just not doing enough to warrant being tired at night.  Only took panadeine the first two nights, other than that haven't had any painkillers at all.  As Chrissie said after her c-section - pain is your friend - reminds you to take it easy so as not to rupture anything.

So Wednesday afternoon my bowels were feeling a little off.  Nothing unusual, can get that sometimes (all too often) if I eat too much bad food.  Or even regular food.  After dinner I was pretty gassy and burpy, moreso than usual.

But throughout the night it got worse rather than better.  Woke up at 4:00 in some discomfort.

No nausea, so unlikely to be food poisoning.

Oh wait, wave of nausea Thursday morning but overcame it and went to work.

Another one hit me at work but overcame that as well.

By the third wave I thought I'd let it have its way.  Maybe I'd feel better.

But I didn't.

So after feeling like crap I decided to go home at 10:00.

Lay down but couldn't rest - too uncomfortable.  I had a tiny piece of cheese and a little water but not really very much.

Late morning and I'm doing the doctor google thing.  Symptoms were edging towards appendicitis.  Even though I wasn't in any real pain, just strong discomfort.  But it did hurt when I poked around my appendix.  Decided not to eat or drink anything more "just in case".

So drove myself to the walkin clinic.  Stu had already paid for parking for the day right there anyway, so no problem leaving the car there.  It was probably about 12:45 when I got there.  Had to wait ages, and was feeling very uncomfortable.  Eventually they took pity on me and I think I might have got bumped up a position.  The nurse had a bit of a poke and thought that yes I should probably go to the hospital.  Called the sweetie and he drove me over to the hospital.

Had to wait quite a long time there as well, so it's well and truly mid afternoon by now.  Had explained my symptoms to the triage nurse on the desk, and eventually got seen by a doctor.  He did a bit of a history and poked me a bit, and then stuck in a cannula (in my very dehydrated veins, first go, to his credit) and took some blood.  Asked me for a urine sample (did I mention I was dehydrated?  and I'd peed when I arrived at the hospital, so that was a bit of a challenge).  He asked for mid stream but got end stream, there was so little.

So he comes back shortly after and says he's admitting me - yep, likely appendicitis.  18000 white blood count, elevated temperature and some of the classic symptoms.  Fun.

So I'm in a bed in emergency.  Eventually a surgeon comes by and gets all the details all over again (I've told the story four or five times today already).  They were considering a CT but decided not to (for unrelated reasons), and at 16:45 decided to load me up with fluids and do an ultrasound at 17:45.  By 17:35 my bladder hurt like hell.  How was I going to hold it in for another half hour (at least) ??  Then around 17:45 they were like, meh, not going to bother with the ultrasound, just going to do the surgery.  So I peed! Yayyyyy!!   (dude for ultrasound eventually turned up - at 17:55 - I really don't think I would have lasted that long).  I did get sick again though because I was so hungry (it's a thing I do, don't ask).  Nothing there though except bile.  Hurrah.

The sweetie had gone back to work in the afternoon, and went home to get changed.  I let him know where I was up to, that they were going to do surgery, so he thought he'd grab some dinner on the way in and then come see me before I went off to surgery.  Except maybe around 18:30 off I went, and never got to see him :(:(

Got wheeled through the hospital upside down and backwards, which is somewhat disorienting.  Went to the OR prep.  More doctors and nurses and anesthesiologists and told my story yet again.  They asked me to say in my own words why I was there, and I said "for an appendectomy" and the admitting nurse scolded me for my American usage - "it's appendicectomy didn't you know??"

Then in to the OR.  Everyone was gloved, but still *touching things*.  I'm sure that pen and paper isn't sterile... hrmmm.

Scooted over onto the operating bed and got poked and prodded some more.  Pain killers (they weren't wrong about making me light headed) and the next thing I knew was calls of Karen Karen Karen and it was all over.  A couple of hours later.  Couldn't feel any pain (figured that would change) and felt quite tired.

After about twenty minutes waiting for my heart rate to lower I got wheeled to my room for the night, and I'm like, where's the sweetie?  He was just outside! Yayy!  He'd called my mum and some family/friends to let everyone know what was happening, bestest sweetie ever.

So there's still more poking and prodding and checking obs, when I all I wanted was some food and to brush my teeth and go to the toilet and go to bed.  But everything operates on hospital time.  They'd wander off and it'd be ten or fifteen minutes before they came back.  So it was after midnight by the time I got to turn lights out.

Not that I slept very well.  I don't really like sleeping on my back but on my sides was too painful.  A teenager came in across the way in a lot of pain.  The lady next to me had all sorts of complications and also in a lot of pain.  Had my pulse and blood pressure read a couple of times.  At 4:00 when they came in for something I said I may as well go pee again.  Dozed but didn't really get any sleep.

The morning dragged on as well.  They said I could go home that day, but I got a steady stream of various people come by.  Breakfast (I was starving) wasn't til 8:45.  The sweetie came by at some point too.  But nothing much happened.  A bit before midday my temp was up a little and I was in a bit more pain, so I was worried I was getting an infection.  But likely it was just the panadol wearing off that I'd had at 5:30.  Time kept dragging.  Had a late lunch (probably too much food) but still waiting around to go home.

Finally FINALLY I could go at about 14:30.

Rested with the sweetie for a while, but didn't really sleep.  Then he went off to pick up Fiona from Jolimont, and they went and had beer and meat on a stick.  Well not quite.  They did to go to Bentspoke for beer, and to the multicultural festival for potato on a stick (and a couple of other things).  Because I'd had such a big late lunch I had popcorn for dinner.  Because, fibre!  Watched some old episodes of Naked Chef (man he was so *young* when he started, and Jules was just his girlfriend hehe).  Started watching Muriel's Wedding on Netflix, even though I have it on DVD.  Silly really.  Then Stu and Fiona came home.  They brought frozen chips so we heated some of those up.  But it did mean I went to bed a lot later than I wanted to.

Had some panadeine (from my stash before they stopped selling the stuff over the counter) and actually slept quite well.  Was able to sleep on my sides for some of the night, and slept in til about 7:30.

Today Stu and Fiona went off to do some food shopping and I watched the rest of Muriel's Wedding and Netflix and tried to select photos for the holiday slideshow.  I've been mostly just sitting up.  I was never a fan of lying on the couch anyway (hurts my back unless I get things just right), and it's a lot harder to get up from the couch.  This afternoon has mostly just been chilling.  Nice and quiet like.  I also found the web archive of Julie Powell's blog, so have been reading that from the beginning.  Not really sure why some people hated it so much.  It reads like someone just doing it for themselves, not out to make a name for themselves.  She does sound like she was burning the candle at both ends though!

My butt does hurt from sitting so much though...  normally I'm bouncing up and down a *lot* more!

So an eventful couple of days.  But of everything, from appendicitis, to surgery, to recovery, the single most painful thing of the whole experience was them taking off the sticky tape holding in my cannula!   (followed by holding my pee for the ultrasound that never happened :) )

End of January

Starting Australia Day.

Saturday: All The Things!  I renamed and resized all six thousand odd photos from the Canon from the holiday.  Watched Julia sans Julie.  Had a lovely lunch with the sweetie at Chong Co.  Did our food shopping.  Geotagged a lot of the Canon photos.  Watched Fuller House and The Usual Suspects.

Sunday: Began processing iPhone photos from the holiday, dealing with random changes in time zones and the fact that APPLE SUX (still raging at Apple randomly changing the date fields on my files).  Had dinner at Chrissie's.  Had Over the Hedge on cause Zac wanted to watch it, but Chris and I chatted and didn't really watch the movie.

Monday:  Had a good nights sleep.  Continued iPhone photo processing.

Tuesday:  Backed up the computer (and all that work on the photos).  Salmon for dinner.

Wednesday:  Zombie day on account of epic insomnia on Tuesday night.  Couldn't get to sleep.  Maybe it was the salmon?  Not the first time I've had salmon then not be able to get to sleep.  Got up to resizing and geotagging the iPhone photos.

Thursday:  Had F over for pizza for dinner, and watched bits and pieces of Stephen Colbert.  Appreciated the cool change!  Couldn't get into my computer before I went to bed.  It was swapping hard and the login screen was unresponsive.  In the end I got impatient with it and rebooted it.  But in the process corrupted the inboxes in Eudora :(

Farewell. Again.

1 February saw a bunch of us at Thai Ayutthaya to farewell Cath and Stewie.  Again.  :)

Cath and Stewie farewell. Again.

I'm sure we'll see them again, they're sure to be back at some point... maybe.. :)

Kit Talk

| | Comments (0)

So just when I was feeling like I might go to bed at like 20:30, Kit suggested a video drink.  So basically we just facetimed for an hour or so and it was almost kinda just a little bit like the real thing.  It was kinda nice actually.

Miss those guys.

Hot. Sweaty.

Stoopidly humid day today, which meant the cooler didn't work all that well.  At least it felt that way.

I was super busy all day too.  My todo list was over a page long.  I did do most if it though which was good.

Said goodbye to Kit and Pete, although I'm still feeding George, Petal and Vicki at least until tomorrow heh.

Stu chopped a foot of my hair off today.  Quite freaky to say the least.

We pumped and siphoned all but about 10cm of water out of the pool today.

We finished season 5 of Rake tonight.  I have to say this season was just too .. silly ..  I mean I know the other seasons were silly too but this just seemed a bit over the top.

Roosteroo

| | Comments (0)

Last weekend Kit pulled two containers of "Roo Stew" out of her freezer, made from some of her young roosters.  I was going to bring them home.  Except I forgot them and left them on the bench.  Which meant they'd defrosted overnight.  But we ate them this week and we were fine.

Last night Kit had defrosted two of her young roosters and was planning to feed them to the dogs, unless I wanted them, and I was like, I'll eat them!  So they're roasting now.

Sadly last weekend two young roosters met their fate and are now in the veggie patch, on account of Kit simply didn't have the time to process them.

Circle of life and all....

Tuesday we had dinner with Cath at Malaysian Chapter which was nice.

Thursday had lunch with Chrissie.  Nathan has two teeth!

Nathan teeth

This week I finally finished a project I started shortly after joining my new team a year or so ago.  I said it would take two years.  But it took only a bit over a year.  So we had a team lunch on Friday to celebrate.

Friday evening met up with Chrissie and went back to her place for dinner while Stu did some clothes shopping.

Didn't get a whole lot done on Saturday.  Had the feeling that there was too much to do so didn't know where to start so nothing much got done.  Le sigh.  We were all set to go out to the club in the afternoon but the sweetie got a migraine.  After an hour he was still feeling very delicate so we didn't go.  Which was a bit disappointing because we'd been going to help with the prep for the Christmas party.  Sorry guys!  Instead we had chicken kiev and potato gems and watched Death in Paradise and Cars 2.  I'd never seen Cars 2 before.  It was, well.. silly..  Although I did laugh out loud quite a few times in spite of myself.  Had a quiet drink with Kit and Pete before bed time.  Less than two weeks before they move :(

Today was just more bits and pieces and not achieving a whole lot.

Except.

We sadly said goodbye to our pool, and have spent the afternoon draining it off.  While I was getting the pool ready for summer a couple of months ago I noticed a patch of rust at the bottom of the steel below the skimmer box.  Seems the skimmer box had been dripping water into the gap between the two layers of the skin of the pool where they overlap at the end.  I tried contacting Swimart but they never even bothered to respond to my query.  So contacted Poolwerx instead and they sent someone out to have a look but couldn't really say how serious the problem was.  I contacted the previous owner of our house.  They bought the place in 1991, and the pool was a few years old at that point.  Which means our pool is around thirty years old!!  It's definitely had a good run, and we had it for ten years.  I was too paranoid to keep it, on account of the club pool splitting a couple of years ago.  Fortunately there was no damage at the club, but I was terrified that ours would split and damage the foundations of ours and/or Kit's house.  We had some great times in that pool and we're both very very sad to see it go.

Other than that..

Pretty quiet weekend.

Friday night we were going to go to Chong Co for dinner, but it was closed for renovations.  So went next door to Sushi Bay which was pretty decent.  Then saw Bohemian Rhapsody.

Saturday just the usual house work and All The Things.  Also went down to a seamstress to get a couple of dresses taken up.  Finished off some leftovers for dinner and watched Death in Paradise, before heading down to visit Kit who is back in town for the weekend.

Today I didn't do as much real work, just picking Lego to put into sets.  It's hard work because there's Lego everywhere but buried in bags in tubs so difficult to get at.  And the computer I'm using is my old computer which is pretty slow.  I've got five word docs open for five sets, and marking pieces off as I gather them, and noting which pieces are missing.  I've been at it for like a week and still haven't finished one pass through all the Lego.  And then I have to start all over again with the next batch.  It's going to take *forever*.

Where Were We?

| | Comments (0)

Thursday night: epic insomnia.

Friday: Kit came home for the weekend.  We didn't think she was going to come back because she had to go to Sydney on Sunday night, but she did, so we went down and said hi after dinner.

Saturday:  All The Things.  Although not really all of them.  Got some stuff done but not huge amounts.  In the afternoon we headed out to the club for the evening.  The pool was warm enough so it was all quite pleasant.

Sunday:  More house stuff, food shopping, Rake and Death in Paradise.  Oh and we also went clothes shopping and it didn't end in tears!

Struggling to stay on top of everything.  So.  Busy.

Stop the world, I want to get off!!

BBQs and Stuff

| | Comments (1)

Thursday night was BBQ at @CLBradley's which was nice.  Haven't seen them in ages (other than at Frank's funeral).  Chris and Glenda (and Junior) came too which was good but Neil and Doc couldn't make it.  Next time!

Pumpkin light at Chris's

Superlative soap

Champagne at Chris's 59th

Chris's birthday cake

Friday night was BBQ at Kit's for a farewell party.  It was nice too, and chatted about nothing to Tarun for a while too which was good.  The only problem was the drama.  The Kit-Serena drama, the Sarah-Serena drama, the Kit-Pete drama.  Sheesh.  I don't like drama.

Saturday was just doing All The Things.  Didn't even leave the property all day.  Had a pretty quiet evening, watched Up.

Sunday was just doing All The Things.  Didn't even leave the extended property all day.  Had a pretty quiet evening, watched Toy Story 3.

So a nice quiet weekend.  Got a fair bit done, although not as much as I would have liked.

On Sunday morning we went down to say goodbye to Kit.  She went down the coast after that to start a new job.  We'll see her a couple more times before they're down there for good.  Gonna miss those guys.  Gonna miss George.  Gonna miss feeding all our kitchen scraps to the chickens.  David will not miss Fonzie!

Friday David and Kat came to stay which was nice.  We couldn't decide what to have for dinner, so went to the shop for inspiration.  While staring at the fridge some random came in so David asked "what's for dinner?", to which she said, pasta with chicken, cream, sundried tomatoes, and D&K were like "can we come to your place?" haha.  Did pick up some stuff and made creamy bacony porky pasta.  After dinner we finished the jigsaw I'd been working on for the week (all that was left was sky that took a third of the jigsaw).  And we put on Flying High because Kat needed to see it.  Except she wouldn't watch it.  Oh well.

Saturday morning we started a new jigsaw before they wandered off.  Didn't have a particularly efficient day.  Did some food shopping but that was about all.  Thought we'd have a nice quiet evening.  Watched Wall-E (because we don't have Ratatouille).  After the movie I tried to use David's G7X in stars mode, but I couldn't get it to focus.  I completely lost it.  My brother can get the most amazing photos out of that camera, but I can't even operate it in point and shoot mode.  Such a failure at life.  Which was sad because the sweetie had come out to sit with my while I was doing stuff, which was really nice, but I couldn't deal and went to bed.  And then woke up at about 1:45am and stayed awake for the next three or four hours.  Hurrah.

Sunday I was pretty much a zombie, so again, nothing got done.  Such a waste of a weekend.  I shoulda gone petanquing.

David and Kat came back in the afternoon, complete with broken ankle.  Kat had rolled it on uneven ground on Saturday night.  They got it treated at Goulburn Base Hospital on Sunday on the way back here.  We finished the jigsaw we started on Saturday and watched some Good Place and had roast pork for dinner, and I slept a whole lot better.

Monday evening I think I managed to achieve more in an hour than I did all weekend.  Silly really.

Tuesday evening was hurty, which was remedied with wine and pizza, and a drink with Kit and Pete, one of our last ever at their place.  Sad times.

Turned on the cooler tonight for the first time this season.  I think it's going to be a hot one....

Wednesday night was a work trivia night.

We won.

Again.

Although we got a reprieve - before they announced first and second place they said that as an incentive to actually win, they were going to make the second place getters run the next one.  hehehe :)

Last night was bbq at Serena's for her birthday which was attended by her housemates and Anita.  Was pretty fun but didn't have a late night which was good.

Today is just doing all the things, although I've been going a bit slowly so not getting All The Things done, just some of them.

Long Weekend. Again.

I could get used to them.

Friday took a random day off and got things done.  Mostly planning and tax type stuff.  And got the pool looked at.  And went food shopping.  Watched Star Trek Into Darkness in the evening.

Saturday was more of the same.  In the afternoon went to Casey Jones for Wello's 40th birthday drinks/snacks thing which was quite nice. Stu had been out at the club and was originally planning to stay the night but decided to come home.  So we went to Scott's where the N-Gang was all having pizza.  Unfortunately it was a super late night as these nights often are.

So was pretty tired all day today.  Got stuff done in the morning though (including loading up the green bin and more tax stuff).  Spent several hours in the afternoon watching dad's WWII documentaries and finally finished checking Vic's Lego.  Just a little bit of filing of the last of the pieces and then it will be time to start collecting pieces to construct sets!

Watched Cheaper by the Dozen in a couple of parts over the weekend, and Finding Nemo tonight.

Fondue!

| | Comments (0)

Last week Aunty Di and Uncle Graham were in town, so went over to Chrissie's on Wednesday night for wine and fondue!

Grate up a bunch of gruyere and swiss cheese (Westfield Belconnen has NO delis now, so no emmental was to be had #epicfail #westfieldau).

Fondue grated cheese

Mix with some corn flour and nutmeg

Mix in corn flour and nutmeg

Add to a cup or two of heated white wine and stir

Stir til thick

Scoff the whole lot in short order

Serve

Long Weekend

So I flexed off Friday.  With no power and no internet there were no distractions, so had a super productive morning tidying the house, and I got behind the tv cabinet and tidied up and pulled out a bunch of stuff no longer in use and finally FINALLY put the PS3, Wii and new dvd player into the cabinet, so that's all much more betterer.

Then I picked up Neil and we went to Ryan McNaught's Brick Man exhibition.  As you do.

Then I came home (via work and a bit of supply shopping) and tidied up the rack which had degenerated into a massive mess, and pulled out my computer desk and tidied and cleaned behind that.

David and Kat came to stay and we did a jigsaw and got pizza for dinner (two nights in a row hrmmm).

So a super productive Friday.

Saturday wasn't as productive but did get a bit of stuff done.  Went out to the club in the afternoon and helped Fiona prep and serve dinner for sixty people.  These dinners are getting bit out of control...

Sunday morning was mostly food prep and a bit of tidying.  Had Nat and Andrew come over for our annual hanami lunch which was nice.  And then played Mario Kart all afternoon.

Went down to Kit's in the evening, took a bit of cheese that turned out to be dinner (big lunch, not hungry), but got talked into staying later and later.  Whoops.

Monday was still trying to keep up with All The Things.  Got some of it done but not all.  Later in the arvo we went over to EffanC's for drinks and dinner, and R&F came too which was nice.  Collapsed into bed for an early night.

Went over to Chrissie's for dinner on Friday.  It's been too long since I've seen them.  Didn't help that they were sick for like a month.  Aunty Di is coming down in the school holidays - mum you should get a slideshow together and come down.

Saturday was pretty much just house stuff all day.  I did make a lemon cheesecake that generally turned out well but needs a tweak or two on the recipe.  Just need to practise til I get it right ;)

Saturday evening we went over to Scott's so he could get a bit of practise with the pizza oven.  It turned out to be a slow process and by the time we got through three pizzas (two of them gluten free) we were quite full.  And there wasn't even enough cheese ;)

Sunday just more house type stuff.  Did some food shopping and cooked pork belly for dinner.  Still not convinced by the recipe I've used twice now.  Tastes good but the crackling goes bubbly (and takes effort not to burn) and just isn't as good (and doesn't keep as well) as my normal method.  Watched Snatch because the guys at work said it was good, but I wasn't convinced.  I even struggled to stay awake through some of it..

Tonight I finished labelling day 16 of our East Asia trip, only three days to go.  And then I did a 500 piece jigsaw.  In an hour.  Whoops.
