In a strange twist of fate, the sweetie and I were in both Australia and New Zealand on Anzac Day - had a quick hop across the ditch to celebrate our tenth wedding anniversary - making the most of the last of the Singapore Airlines direct flights to Wellington - in fact our flight back was the second last one.

Since we've been back I've been meaning to blog, but I'm a slacker.  I wanted to rant about the poor customer service from Netflix, and praise the fantastic customer service from Willow.  I've been busy at work but not crazy busy, in fact had time to clean things this week which was nice.

A bunch of us ended up at Rob and Fiona's last night for chilli which was nice (and not tooo spicy!), and I inflicted them with not just our New Zealand slide show, but Japan 2009, Hong Kong 2013 and East Asia 2017.  Oops.  :)

I've processed all my New Zealand photos (renamed, resized and geotagged).  And other than food shopping that's about all I've managed to achieve this weekend.  Well that and cooking half the afternoon.  Cauliflower bake and teriyaki chicken for dinner, and cheese balls for snacks.

This is my new wallpaper - Belconnen from the air

Crazy Weeks

Such a busy week this week. Absolutely crazy.

Took an early mark tonight and came home and played with Lego for a while before Jenn came over for dinner (vegeterian gyoza).  Jenn brought over a few of her Tequilas she got from Mexico last year for a taste testing which was pretty cool.  After dinner we played a game of Carcassonne (I won, oops).  Such a pleasant evening.

Ok day, relatively busy.

The little brother and then Leanne came over for dinner.  Just did spaghetti with bascaiola sauce (cream, bacon, garlic - no mushrooms on account of my brother doesn't like mushrooms).  Nice enough, if a little carby and veggie-less (we haven't been shopping in two weeks).  Although I then did find the epic zucchinis in the fridge we got off Kit that I need to use soon.

Having a moment now on account of whenever I open my mouth people switch off and don't listen.  Hate that crap.

Wednesday night we had Zac come and stay with us because Chrissie had to go to Sydney for a conference.  We watched Aladdin, which he'd never seen! *gasp* !!

Thursday night we had Ben over for dinner.  Had evil cheese and bacon chicken roast and watched documentaries on Lego and Boeing's Everett "megafactory".

Friday night we did the visiting.  I'd had a crappy day so really didn't feel like socialising, but Kit and Serena had had even crappier days so we all tried to help each other feel better.

Also I'm getting really tired of insomnia (get it, arf arf).  Twice this week I've gone to bed at reasonable time, but then woken up in the middle of the night for hours.  Partly temperature (too hot with the doona on, too cold with it off), partly my brain not shutting up, but mostly just my spine never feeling comfortable :/

Friday night we took Chrissie out for her birthday - she now joins me in knowing the meaning of life, the universe, and everything.  We went to the Dumpling Inn and had some of our favourites (shredded beef peking style and three cup wine chicken) and some dumplings (still can't compete with Din Tai Fung).  Went back to her place afterwards and Kit came down as well.

Dumpling Inn dumplings

Dumping Inn three cup wine chicken

Dumpling Inn fried dumplings

Dumpling Inn shredded beef peking style

Lacked motivation this weekend.  Had a big todo list, but barely any of it got done.

I did manage to clean the kitchen and the spare room.  And did some washing.

Other than that, about ten hours on the jigsaw.  And all I've got to show for it is some sorting (about three hours), the edge, and a tiny bit of the jigsaw proper.

Ominous skies

Well, also went for a longish (well it took ages, but that was cause of the kid and the dogs being special, it was actually only 4.85km) walk with Chris.  And the sweetie cooked dinner and did *heaps* of work in the garden.

FQ Topic: Scenario

FQ1: You've been given a million dollars to donate to a worthy charity! Which organization would benefit from your generosity and why are they deserving?
um, probably the Red Cross.  They just seem to always be there when needed.

FQ2: You've testified against the mob and have to leave the country! Where do you go to start your new life, and what new career will you pursue?
Probably Europe.  Career?  Travel blogger? :)

FQ3: A movie studio has given you carte blanche to develop a sequel to a film of your choice! What's your sequel going to be about and who's starring in it?
Harry Potter during the years after the books finished.  There's still so much more to those stories that could be told.  Since it's still so close to the original movies, you could get all the original actors.

FQ RE-BLOG: A tragic computer malfunction has erased your current blog so you decide to start over again under a fictitious identity. Who would you become and what would you write about?
Blerf.  I have enough trouble writing about *reality*, let alone fiction.

FQ Topic: Funny

FQ1: What's something you find humorous, but probably shouldn't?
Stoopid people doing stoopid things

FQ2: What's something that others find funny, but you don't?
There's Something About Mary.  Stoopidest. Movie. Ever.  I barely raised a smile the whole way through it, yet the rest of the cinema was cacking itself.

FQ3: What actor/comedian/personality always makes you laugh? What movie? What book?
um.  I dunno.. maybe Robin Williams?
movie - Flying High!
book - maybe something by Roald Dahl.

FQ STAND-UP: Tell us a joke or funny story.
This was always my dad's favourite joke.  Because I've heard it so often it's the only joke I really remember.  This is a brief version cause I couldn't be bothered embellishing it :)

So there's this little old lady who's lonely and goes into a pet store to buy a budgie to talk to.  But when she gets it home the budgie starts swearing its head off.  The little old lady takes it back to the pet store because she can't have a swearing budgie in the house.  But the pet store guy goes, "whenever it swears, just put it in the freezer for ten seconds - not to long otherwise it'll freeze".  So she does this.  As soon as the budgie starts swearing, she takes it and puts it in the freezer, counts up to ten, then takes out it.  The budgie is shivering and asks "If I got ten seconds for swearing, what did the chook do??"

FQ Topic: Olympic

FQ1: Which Olympic events are your most and least favorite?
Most: maybe gymnastics or diving
Least: boxing

FQ2: In what Olympic competition would you have the best shot at a gold medal?
No chance at all in anything.  The only sport I've ever played was hockey, but I was never very good at that.

FQ3: If you could add or invent a new Olympic sport, what would it be?

FQ PITCHMAN: Propose why your home town should host the next Olympic Games (your choice Summer or Winter).
My *home* town?  Sydney?  We did that in 2000 and Juan Antonio Samaranch declared it the best Olympics ever.
Canberra on the other hand.  Well we do have some national sport centres, but we're probably a bit too small to host an Olympics.

FQ Topic: Culinary

FQ1: In addition to the dearly departed Julia Child, who is your favorite food personality?
Peter Russell Clarke!  Where's the cheese!?  ok so it's been thirty years since I watched anything of his..

FQ2: What meal would you have this culinary genius prepare for you if they asked?
Anything with cheese!

FQ3: If they refused, and you could eat at any restaurant you wanted as a consolation, which one would you choose?
Gosh.  Um.  I've still never been to Tetsuya's but always wanted to try it..

FQ KITCHEN: Share with us a favorite recipe or cooking tip.
Recipe: other than roast pork, one of my favorite recipes is potato bake - sliced potato, cream, cheese, bacon, cheese, garlic, more cheese
Tip: you can never have too much cheese!

FridayQ: Ego

Didn't get to do this last Friday on account of being down at the coast

Friday, August 13th 2004...   (it was Friday the 13th last Friday too)

FQ Topic: Ego

FQ1: What is an activity that you can do better than anybody else you know?

FQ2: What is a subject where you are smarter than anybody else you know?
hrmm don't know about that one.  In my last job I often found myself in a position where there were no other "experts" in my team so I was on my own trying to solve problems.  This job is quite a bit different because there's so many people in IT that there's almost always people around that know more than me, which is great because I'm pretty dumb.  But I suppose there's a few geeky, "kids" things, like Lego or Harry Potter that I probably know more about than any of my adult friends.

FQ3: What is a trait you possess that makes you superior to lesser humans?
Attention to detail, meticulousness, ok anal retentiveness.  Good for some things, like doco or paint-by-numbers, but is probably annoying to a lot of people (especially the ones that don't meet my high standards ;) )

FQ FICTION: Which of your many stellar accomplishments should be recorded in the history books? (Can't think of one? Make it up!).
Gosh.  Um.  Too hard...

FQ Topic: Childhood

FQ1: Where did you live out your childhood years?
Como, Sydney, Australia

FQ2: As a child, what was your favorite toy, book, television show, and cartoon character?
Toy?  As a little kid it was "Ducky" an elongated rubber duck thing.  In 1983 I made "Cutie" - essentially a pompom which I still have and travel the world with.
Kazza and Ducky  Cutie on Lake Galilee
Favourite book?  I didn't read many books, I found reading long stories tedious.  I liked TinTin and Asterix comics.  Choose your own adventures.  Horse books.
TV show?  I remember lots from my teenage years.  As a child?  Probably my earliest memory of a favourite tv show would be Whacky Races.  I was always Penelope.  We used to watch it with a kid from our school, Cosmos, before we went to school.
Cartoon character?  Dunno.  I liked Warner Brothers cartoons later on, and Inspector Gadget..

FQ3: Charm us with a favorite childhood memory...
Here's a whole blog of it...

FQ PHOTO-OP: Show us a photo of just how adorable you were as a child.
meh.  This was me on our front balcony.

FQ Topic: Criminal

FQ1: If you could steal something and be assured of getting away with it, what would you take?
Probably a few million dollars so I could invest it and live off it so I wouldn't have to work anymore.

FQ2: If you could vandalize something without fear of being caught, what object would you deface?
Blues Point Tower
Ugliest building in Sydney, if not for its design but the location which makes it stick out like a sore thumb.

FQ3: If you could trespass someplace where you were not allowed and nobody would find out, where would it be?
The next Soyuz rocket to the ISS.  I've always wanted to go into space..

FQ REDEMPTION: Time to redeem yourself for the above stated criminal activities! If you were allowed to write a new law, what law would you create?
Outlawing stoopid people?

Looks like I never did this one last time..

FQ Topic: Decorated

FQ1: How have you decorated the walls of your living space (photos, posters, works of art, etc.)?
Not much.  We're total slackers.  We've been in this house over six years and we've only hung like half a dozen things.  Actually Stu has.  All I've got up is a Lego mosaic.  Most of the walls are still bare.

FQ2: How have you decorated your body, both intentionally (piercings, tattoos, etc.) and unintentionally (wounds, scars, etc.)?
I have my ears pierced.  And a few small scars.

FQ3: How have you decorated your computer's "desktop"? Post a snapshot if you want.
My computer at work cycles through several holiday's worth of photos at random.  At home I have a photo of the earth at equinox 2013 taken from APOD.  I used to use my own photos but most of them aren't any good.

FQ PROJECT: Decorate your blog today! Create some art with an online Etch-a-Sketch (like the one here) and post a snapshot of your efforts (or, if you're not an Etch-a-Sketch fan, draw us a picture using whatever you want).
Ha.  I'm not creative at all.  So here's a sneak preview of what I'm working on at the moment.  Art without the creativity!!

FQ Topic: Stupidity

FQ1: Admit it, sometimes you are not the sharpest tool in the shed. What's something stupid you've done recently? (The FridayQ doesn't count!)
It usually involves drinking a little too much and feeling a bit under the weather the next day

FQ2: Children do idiotic things all the time because they just can't seem to help it. What's something stupid you did as a kid?
Jumped up too fast from being on the floor playing with my brother - because mum was coming in from outside and I was meant to be getting ready for school.  I pulled a muscle in my leg and it made it hard to walk for a few days.

FQ3: Sometimes, being a bit of an idiot is required (or fun!). What's something stupid you will be doing in the future?
It usually involves drinking a little too much and feeling a bit under the weather the next day

FQ OBSERVER: People are morons. Without naming names, what's something stupid you've seen somebody else do?
How about the guy the other day we saw swerve across two lanes of traffic to take an exit..

FridayQ: Suggestive

| | Comments (0)

FQ Topic: Suggestive

FQ1: Suggest something to read, something to watch...
Star Trek VI by J.M. Dillard, probably my favouritest book ever.  And Veronica Mars.  Totally awesome show.

FQ2: Suggest someone to admire, someone to stare at...
The sweetie!  One of the most wonderful people I know.

FQ3: Suggest someplace to go, someplace to avoid...
Go? Europe, Japan, Hong Kong, where do I even start? heh
Avoid? I can think of a few places I've had bad travel experiences at, but nothing enough to say don't go there.  That I can think of.  I'm sure I'll think of something later.  If I do I'll add it here.

FQ PROJECT: Suggest an itinerary for somebody visiting your city by listing the five must-see attractions of the area.
Well it depends a lot on what you're interested in.  For me I like towers and high places, so I'd suggest Mt Ainslie (free) and/or Black Mountain Tower.  Probably a tour around Lake Burley Griffin to see all the public buildings and the carillon.  Questacon is a favourite of mine because I'm a science geek.  The parliament houses if you're into that sort of thing.  And there's plenty of galleries if you're into that sort of thing.

FridayQ: Vent

FQ Topic: Vent

FQ1: What's the one thing above all others that drives you insane... that one dreaded event that causes you to completely lose your composure and want to kick, scream, and beat something with a big stick?
Just one??  Probably people pushing in.  It makes me hate all people and want to destroy them with fire.

FQ2: Is that all? Surely there is something else that will cause you to freak out! Here's your chance to vent and list a few other things that make you go nuts...
People making a mess, people not doing doco, people being cruel to animals, people not indicating, gravity, crap vendor support, stoopid people, anally-retentive people, people that make fun of my hobbies and interests.

FQ3: When you've been driven crazy by something or someone... and are barely containing your frustration... is there anything you can do that will make you calm down, dispell the rage, and be happy again?
Rant on my blog, have a few drinks and rant to colleagues, rant to Stu.  Ranting is a thing with me I think.  Sorry.  Or I might go and do a jigsaw.

FQ DARE: Admit it, you're not perfect... what is something you do that drives other people crazy?
Probably my ranting/complaining.

FQ Topic: Liar

FQ1: Lie about where you spent your last vacation.
Went to the moon

FQ2: Tell an untruth about your last romantic encounter.
With Jason Isaacs.  Gosh it's been over ten years since I've had a crush on a movie star.

FQ3: Fib about the last gift you received.
One million dollars

FQ DARE: This time tell the truth on all the above!
Well last vacation was Hong Kong and Taipei.  Last "romantic" encounter I'd say the nice drive the sweetie and I took last weekend, which was not necessarily romantic in the traditional sense of the word, but was just a really nice time together talking about life and stuff.  Last gift would have been Christmas presents I guess.

Compare with last time ...  looks like I had a lot more energy to think about it last time.  Also, I didn't forget this on Friday, it's just that we went out straight after work and pretty much was out the entire weekend..

FridayQ: Gadget

FQ Topic: Gadget

FQ1: What's your favorite electronic gadget that you own? Which gadget do you wish you owned but don't?
Tough choice between my phone and my camera.  Both of them go *everywhere* with me.
Only gadget I'm thinking of at the moment is a dash cam, but I don't drive nearly enough to make it worthwhile.
Actually I know - a quadcopter that does video you can watch live.  I want to fly vicariously through one.

FQ2: What gadget do you wish somebody would invent so you could have one? Which gadget do you wish had never been invented at all?
A teleporter.  This was especially a thing when Stu was living in Brisbane and I was in Sydney.  But even now commuting and travelling would be sooo much easier with a teleporter.
Never been invented? Can't think of anything really ..

FQ3: Do you consider yourself an electronic gadget junkie? How many gadgets are around/on you right now?
Not really.  I don't have to have the latest and greatest.  On/around me *right now* would be my phone, the camera in my bag, pedometer in my pocket, computer I'm typing this on.. maybe lasers and whatnot around my desk..

FQ DARE: Reveal a trendy gadget you bought, but are now embarrassed to own/have owned.
Had something here but deleted it so as not to offend anyone.  Nothing really.

FridayQ: Musical

Friday, June 11th 2004...
FQ Topic: Musical

FQ1: Do you play any musical instruments or have any musical talents? Whose musical talent would you most like to have?
I learnt to play the recorder as a kid, and the very basics of keyboard.  I have a *tiny* bit of musical talent that I got from my dad.  But really not very much.  I remember one of the most amazing things I ever saw by a talented musician was called "Five Notes".  It was at a show and she asked for five musical notes, and then a list of composers.  She then proceeded to improvise a tune based on those five notes, in the style of five different composers.  Just amazing.

FQ2: What was the last musical event you attended?
Gosh that took a bit of digging up!  It would have been Phantom of the Opera on my birthday in 2013.  The last band I saw would have been 1927 in 2012.

FQ3: Give it up... to which musician would you most like to have an "all access pass" for the night?
Traditionally David Bowie.  But then he got old, and he straightened his teeth - boring!

FQ DARE: Reveal a musical artist or group that you are embarrassed to like.
I think I probably said Abba last time, although that's not that unfashionable anymore.  Maybe Katy Perry?  Although "like" is stretching things a little - I got her Complete Confection cd because I kinda liked the sound of a few of her songs, but really never learnt any of the songs very well.

FQ CHALLENGE: Mention the above artist or group in a comment you leave on some other blog, then provide the permalink URL where we can find it! (No fair lying about how much you think they suck and no cheating by leaving the comment on somebody else's FridayQ entry!). Extra creativity points for somehow working them into a completely unrelated conversation.
ok so I didn't get the extra creativity points, but here's my link.

FridayQ: Escape

| | Comments (0)

The other month, Dave2 resurrected his FridayQ posts.  I did many of these ten years ago (holy crap has it been that long ???) but I also missed a lot because I actually often found them too hard!  Often it required thought and brainpower that I just didn't have.  Anyway, I thought it might be fun to work through them for the next year (until I forget) and compare answers with ten years ago.  And I even still have a "category" in my blog, which is pretty disturbing in itself!

Friday, June 4th 2004...

FQ Topic: Escape

FQ1: What is your favorite way to escape from everyday life?
Movies, tv (to some extent), internet.  Jigsaws, although that gives me plenty of time to let my brain wander, which sometimes goes into fantasyland, sometimes about life in general.  Alcohol to some extent.  Travel, but not nearly enough of that :)

FQ2: When was the last time you made an escape? Where did you go?
Well our last proper holiday was to Hong Kong and Taipei.  Given that I did almost no planning for it, I guess you could say it was an escape.

FQ3: If you could escape to anywhere on earth right now, where would that be?
Gosh.  Probably Europe somewhere.  I love Europe.

FQ DARE: Post your passport photo (or your driver's license photo if you don't have a passport).
I *hate* my passport photo.  These days you're not allowed to smile for your passport photos which makes me look completely retarded.
