January 8

I was having trouble deciding what to blog first tonight.

If I'd blogged last night it would have been about my trip to Sydney to see mum and her brothers and two Lego shows.

There would have been mention that we went to Aunty Di's on Friday night and remembered the January 1994 bushfires of January 8, those twenty two years ago that day.

If I'd been home to blog on January 8 I certainly would have mentioned my thirteenth blogiversary (my little blog is a teenager!).

And as part of that I would have said happy birthday to David Bowie.

He was in my thoughts three days ago.

And sadly, he was in them again today.

For once I didn't hear it first from the internet.  As in 1997, when I heard about Princess Diana, it was my little brother that told me.

Rest in peace David Bowie.  You were one of the greatest loves of my life.

I first noticed this in 2007 and snapped a picture of Joe Tripodi on tv.

When Marc and Jo were down the other week I got a similar photo of Tim Curry.

Sorry, that's been bugging me for years :)

Her Majesty the Queen

This was a bucket list thing that I never thought I'd get to do - see the Queen!!
Seen mostly through my camera lens, because frankly, it has much better eyesight than I do :)
It was pretty much a case of blink and you'll miss her - the boat zoomed by fairly quickly (it slowed down a bit when it went past the Questacon shore).

Last night I was trying to figure out who this was:

Aussie actor
I was pretty sure it was an Aussie character actor, been in a heap of Aussie movies, but I couldn't find him.

Then I showed the sweetie and he was all.. oh he was in "The Dish"...

*bling*

Well fricken duhhhh... because that screenshot above was taken at The Dish a week ago!!  I was just watching all the videos I'd taken that day.  Mostly of the dish moving around.  But there was a quick grab of the VIPs who were all standing right near me at one point, so I turned around and took a very quick shot of them all on the video.  And that's when I saw that dude!!  I never even realised it when I was there, I just saw it on the video.

So yeah.  Roy Billing.  He played the mayor in The Dish.  Which is pretty funny, because in the video, he actually puts his hand on the current mayor of Parkes :)

As it turns out, I shoulda known - it was on the program and everything hehe.

Come & Get It!

So there was a bit of chaos in the mall yesterday.  Lots of people, and a camera filming someone outside Harris Scarfe.  Then I heard a familiar voice - it sounded like Peter Russell Clarke!  Took a snap on my iPhone first for Twitpic, then saw confirmation that it really was him! :)

Peter Russell Clarke
He's a bit (lot) older now than when I remember him (twenty five years ago!).  I grew up watching his afternoon tv show "Come & Get It".  Phil thought we were mental cause he'd never heard of him :)

Where's the cheese?

ahhh memories :)

Weird Al Yankovic

Went to see Weird Al Yankovic at the Royal Theatre at the Convention Centre tonight.

Two notes to self:
* always remember to take ear plugs along to these sorts of things
* never ever book tickets on the floor of the Convention Centre

Apart from having to jam my fingers in my hears for maybe a third of the night, and getting very frustrated from not being able to see the stage from behind all the tall people in front of me, it was pretty good.

He alternated between doing a song and then playing video clips of mock interviews, clips from tv shows etc that referred to him.  While the clips were on he'd be getting changed into a different outfit for the next song.  A lot of different outfits!  He did many of the most popular songs, eg Fat, Eat It, Amish Paradise, eBay, and The Saga Begins as part of the encore, with plenty of audience participation :)  and plenty of songs I didn't know too.

So that was all good.

Afterwards the sweetie was trying to see if he could get a tshirt, but didn't know if they had any in his size.  So he hung around at the back of the queue to check.  Which meant we were still there very late, almost the last to leave.  Which meant that when somebody mentioned a signing, we thought we'd wait and see... and sure enough - he came out!!  Very squee!!  So got a heap of photos, and even got an autograph on the CD I'd just bought.  !!

Just found out (via Twitter - of course) that Adriana Xenides died the other day :(

I never watched Wheel of Fortune, but I did meet her once - she commented on how beautiful she thought my hair was.

Now Nat and Andrew are *definitely* going to want me to find the tape (which she was on).

Rest in peace..

Karen with John Burgess and Adriana Xenides

As per usual, I get my news from Twitter these days (usually from Dave).  When he first mentioned that Michael Jackson had had a heart attack, I went to the Sydney Morning Herald website and the headline news was that Farrah Fawcett had died.  After I got to work there were the Twitter updates that he'd actually died.  And poor Farrah's story was bumped for his.

Michael Jackson was pretty obviously a damaged guy, I guess we'll never know what was going on in his head all these years.  Rest in peace.
