Lighthouse Birds

A couple of Fridays back @CLBradley and I went to the Lighty for lunch.  Which was very pleasant in the sun.  Going back to face the problems at work afterwards sucked a bit.  But I did get plenty of cool photos of the birds.

Watched the storm roll in.  Read a book.  And just chilled out for a bit.  Stepping out of the airconned-to-cold motel room was like stepping into a sauna.  It was that hot/humid, even after the storm had passed.

So headed into Newcastle to meet up with Fiona.  Was a lovely night and great to catch up with her again.

Went to Goldbergs on Darby Street.

There was cheesy olive bread

I had "black pepper marinated lamb fillet" on a smashed kipfler and apple rosti topped with sumac aioli.  It was delish!

Then back to the motel to crash.  The aircon worked super well and made the room lovely and cold to sleep!

Party #2

Today was our second of many Christmas parties.  This one was originally just our section, but expanded to include the section next door, and then continued expanding to include most of the floor.  Which is good and all, but does make logistics trickier.  But I wasn't on the organising committee so I didn't stress about it.  The only real problem was that the person delegated with the buying of the booze was on the Go Karting trip, and then his car broke down.  So beer was *very* late getting to the party.  There was nearly a riot!

Yeah so Go Karting.  I'd never been before.  It was super awesome fun!  I was second slowest in the first race, and slowest in the second race.  And I got a *massive* bruise under my left arm where I was banged into the side of the kart going around corners :(  If it wasn't so damned expensive ($40 for two ten minute races) I'd totally do it more often.

Go Karting

The party (once the beer arrived ;) ) was pretty awesome.  Rain stayed away.  Instead it stayed very hot, so I spent the afternoon hiding in the shade.  Although I did have one go on the flying fox...

Cockatoos

Woke up this morning and one of the first things I saw was that Heather (Dooce) has separated from her husband, at least for a trial.  Which made me pretty sad.  I mean these guys have had problems forever (they've been in therapy for years), but there were still times when they seemed very much in love.  So yeah. Sadmaking.

Meanwhile, the cockatoos were making a racket this morning, so while I had the camera out to photograph the sunflowers, I took a bunch of photos of the birds.

Still partying

Yesterday we had our section Christmas party by the lake.  Rain that was forecast during the week never eventuated, so it was a perfectly pleasant afternoon.  Lyn and I spent our budget of $370, and I thought there was going to be a *tonne* of leftovers, but in the end it wasn't so bad.

After we'd finished setting up I went for a wander around, and had a go on the dodgem cars, since I missed out last time because the queue was too long.

Air Force One

Snuck out of the office after lunch with Windy today to go see Air Force One!

They'd been landing from the north all morning, but the wind changed and all the flights started coming in from the south.  So we went to Tennant Street Fyshwick which afforded an awesome view of the plane in flight.  My brother made it in time to go to Brindabella Business Park.  We thought about going there too, but were too worried about crowded roads and closures, so decided not to fight the masses and stayed where we went.

We had about 3/4 hour to kill before the plane arrived so took photos of planes, flowers, birds, bugs, and helicopters.  And listened to the F/A-18s flying around somewhere way above the clouds.

Windy was listening to the Air Traffic Control on his phone, and we heard the pilots of Air Force One!

So yeah.. super awesome!!

We decided to go up to the airport to see it on the ground.  Bit of a mistake.  We timed it badly and had to sit on the Monaro Highway for about fifteen minutes while the motorcade left the airport.  Doh.  Saw it from the Costco car park.  Not a great view but traffic was so bad we decided not to go down to the Brindabella Business Park, and went back to work the long way around via Majura Road.

Nanette and the kids were lucky enough to see the motorcade outside the Hyatt later on while we were stuck in traffic.

I can still hear the jets! :)
Since the weekend I've been keeping my news feeds under control.  A typical day takes about 20 minutes to read all the news feeds for (it was a lot longer before I culled lots and lots).  Which doesn't sound like a lot until you miss a day or two, then it adds up very quickly.  So got today's feeds read and spent the rest of the evening geotagging.  Well sort of.  Finding photos taken over Japan, Russian and Germany and tagging them in Google Earth.

Just for fun, here's some pool freezage we had on July 30 - the best we've had this winter.  Solid enough to hold up the bird seed container easily.

Coast Weekend

So Dave had to do some urgent spa maintenance down at the coast, so asked if we wanted to go along.  The cover of the spa had broken a couple of weeks ago, smashing a thermometer and leaving glass in the spa.  Yay.  So alas, spa use was out on Friday night.

The drive down was pretty cool.  Gorgeous clouds and even a huge double rainbow.

Did a jigsaw on Friday night, another one of the mystery jigsaws with no picture on the box, and a puzzle to solve (which we failed at - the bomb would have gone off!)

Vacuumed out the spa and found a chunk of glass from the thermometer.  Hopefully we got it all.

Dinner was a delivery of pizza from the Sandy Foot.  A small Zorba and a medium ham and pineapple.  We finished them both.

Today we went to Bateman's Bay to get some tubing for the bath-tub spa, which was full of crud cause it doesn't get filtered.  So got that and drained that spa out.

Were a bit later leaving that usual, because I wanted to finish this 1000-piece jigsaw of Neuschwantstein.  So basically finished it, photographed it, then pulled it apart again.  All those hours and hours effort and noone got to really enjoy it heh.

The drive up the Clyde was quite pretty cause the clouds were right down on the mountains.

And that was that.

Driving back gives you plenty of time to ponder life.  I've decided I spend way too much time on the computer/internet just mucking around, and other things around the house and my hobbies just aren't getting done.  So going to try a forced break from the computer for a while in the evenings to get stuff done.  Will see how we go..
