Surfing

| | Comments (0)
So after watching Masterchef and sorting out my Eudora (all of my email is now migrated to a new host because kaos is being turned off soon) it was a bit late to really start anything, so did a bit of old-fashioned web surfing.  Well not old-fashioned exactly.  It's more the scenario where you see something on Boing Boing or some such site, and at the bottom there's links to the "top 10 <something>".  From there there's links to all sorts of weird and wonderful other things.  So just followed a bunch of those around for an hour or so.  Was kinda fun :)

So my old CIA email address is no longer being used.  Not sure how long they'll keep a forward going for it.  Be nice if it was a while longer yet.  When you have the same email address for fourteen years lots of people you don't contact much will still be able to contact you (Pirjo found me last year because of it!).  Of course you also get craploads of spam.  Will try and keep my new address off the net as much as possible, except for actual personal email.  The domain catch-all will still be used for the majority of other mail.

Walk

Walked around Lake Ginninderra in 58 minutes today.  Adductors hurt a bit and feet a bit sore.

Oh yeah, and I got to meet the UK CEO of the company that has caused me so much grief over the past year.  Fortunately he acknowledged the product had some serious flaws that they were working on as a matter of high priority.. hurrah!!

A couple of cool links:

Two years ago today we left Salzburg for Munich, then picked up a hire car and drove to Ulm.  Quite bummed that we didn't spend any time in Munich..  next time!!

Around the interwebs

Discovered Picasa's "Where in the World" game tonight quite by accident.  It's surprisingly addictive.  My best score after ten rounds is 2136.

Edit: round 18 - 2647 :)
Had a fairly quiet morning.  Got quite a lot of rss feed items read.  Was under five hundred unread tonight, which is quite an achievement!

After lunch went over to Pauline's so Stu could fix up their new net connection.  While I helped do a jigsaw :)

Scott and Kerry and Jake came over for dinner and Wii.  Did lots of roast veggies, and my potato bake was almost entirely gobbled up .. so much for leftovers ;)

Could use three day weekends more often...

Two links

The first, a completely crazy thing Jake sent me last year while we were in our hotel in Narita trying to decide if we were going to go all the way into Tokyo or not. I sent it to Natto today and freaked her out slightly :)

And the cutest story ever, that I've not had the heart to mark as read in my feed reader..

Had Dan & Emma and Theo come over tonight, and we took them out to our favourite Chinese restaurant (the Dumpling Inn).  I think they were pleasantly surprised by the place, and relieved that we didn't order generic stuff like lemon chicken hehe.  Was a very pleasant evening.. even Stu enjoyed himself :)

Link of the day (sorry, it's a month old, but I'm still a month behind with my news feeds) - Monty Python's YouTube channel!!

Wired!!

Have I ever mentioned that my brother rocks!!??  Yup, seems I have .. twice.. :)

He was coming down to Canberra for the week to work on a train, so last night came over to stay the night.  This morning we thought maybe he could have a look at the adsl link which is a bit flakey, and maybe replace a light fitting for us.

Instead he invited his friends over (Shane and Chris with Lowie in tow) and they wired the whole house!!!  Cleaned up the incoming phone line, cat 6ed the study, lounge room, spare room and bedroom, with everything terminating to the garage where we'll get a proper switch setup, as well as fixing up the aerial and wiring up the downstairs room with an aerial outlet...!! omigosh!!  We were so excited - this was so much more than we were expecting of the day!  And we did end up getting the study (dining room) light fitting replaced, a compact fluorescent dimmer installed (only $10 for dimmable compact fluorescents these days, although you do need a trailing edge dimmer not a leading edge one like most currently are), and the other dimmer moved to the living room chandeliers.  Totally f-ing brilliant!

Of course having so many people in the house all day was pretty draining, so we ordered pizza and watched the first couple of episodes of Californication season 2.  And then I had a meltdown because my computer wouldn't connect to the internet.  We replaced the cable (that was working previously) and all seems well, but it was just too much to bear at the time.

And we didn't get anything else that we'd been planning to do this weekend done, but hey, who's complaining..?? :)

Back!!

We finally got the internet connected today.  Which is wonderful.  A little slow though.. probably noise on the extension that brings it closer to the computers.  Yet to be fiddled with.

One of the first things that my myriad of browser windows reloaded with was this.. snow on Untersberg!!

Untersberg with snow!

I have this really bad habit of opening tonnes and tonnes of tabs in various browser windows with links from Life Hacker and Boing Boing and blogs and such places.  As well as links that I open and use but then never close.  Of course then my computer starts chugging under the load.. oops...

So thought I'd clear a few out..

There's the eight year old Google search as seen on Blogography a while back.  Eight years ago I was still on the front page of Google for Kazza :)  Apparently this won't be around for very long.

I completely and utterly want one of these for Christmas.  And a licence to fly it.  And a maintenance crew to take care of it.  Ok I'd settle for going in one.  Hell even seeing one in the air would be nice...

I still have Beep Beep open in YouTube, and the lyrics, although these aren't quite correct.. I suppose I could look for more correct ones but that would require effort.

A useful tutorial I found on crontab when I was looking for the syntax for setting one up.  I've setup to download a snapshot of the Untersberg web cam three times a day to qualitatively see how often the mountain is in cloud.  And see the changing moods of the countryside.  I first saw some fresh snow there in late September, but that quickly melted.  There was a good covering a few days ago but that's melted too.  One of these years I'll get up that mountain - it's one of my missions in life!

Edit: Added The Atlas of the Real World, with pics here and here.

Memory Lane

I found this on my hard drive the other day.. It was "version 5" of my homepage at http://www.ecr.mu.oz.au/~eydc/karen/home.htm in September 1995.  The first version was a month or two earlier.  It was insanely exciting at the time, having my own little webpage on the big wide internet.  That dinosaur was like my logo, and a reference to how I came to have the page in the first place.  And, freakishly, the original source image of the dinosaur was still on the msstate.edu servers until only very recently.  So it was there for like ten or eleven years (at least!)

Even more freakishly, the same dinosaur is still there, thirteen years later..!

Pixie

My little weather pixie has been offline since the weekend.  On Monday I found out about a fire/explosion in a big data centre in Texas.  Checked with all nettools, and sure enough, the weather pixie site is hosted there.  So have been following the progress ever since.

All I have to say is ... ooops!!
(and hey, it could happen to anyone.. so all sympathies to them!)

Naughty

Stu bought some internet time at the airport.  So naughty, considering the price.  And what am I doing with this time?  Blogging.  How boring ;)
Welcome to my little piece of the Blogosphere!

I am a recent Canberra resident after having spent the first 34 years of my life in Sydney. I am married to my beautiful husband Stu, and we live with several computers and a lot of fish.
