Blanket Banning
After comments had been turned off all day (I renamed the comment cgi but didn't rebuild), I turned it back on tonight and immediately the waste messages started coming through again (usually those sorts of scripts die after a while if they don't have access). So I've banned all of 66.*.*.* 67.*.*.* 68.*.*.* 69.*.*.* and 24.*.*.* as these were where the majority of the messages were coming from. I have no idea what impact such a big ban will have, so email me if you have any problems.
Unfortunately it hasn't stopped all of the messages, there's just too many hacked computers all over the world flooding me :(:(:(
I think a lot of American ISPs use addresses in those ranges so you might wind up blocking some of your legitimate visitors from the States. It is unfortunate that a lot of comment spammers, and spammers generally, seem to operate from America.
I've had quite a few comment spams on my site too. As I'm away from home, it took me a while to dredge my password from the depths of my memory so that I could log in and get rid of them.
By the way, Merry Christmas!
December 27, 2004 12:33 AMBloody Americans! We should just hang the lot of them!! :-)
You've got MT-Blacklist running? Other than that, what made a big difference for me was force-moderating ALL comments. I don't get very many of them, and so it's not quite the big deal I thought it was going to be.
