I saw Prizoner of Azkaban!!

I just saw Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban! I guess my first impression was that it was all "ending". It felt like the last three hours of an entire year at Hogwarts took an hour on screen (although I can't confirm that).

It wasn't bad, but I guess it wasn't great either. That's not to say that I didn't thoroughly enjoy it though! I'd read a review on it the other day which gave more forewarning of the things to expect from it. So knowing the story, knowing the music, and knowing some of the flaws, there wasn't much left except to just enjoy it as a movie.

David Thewlis as Lupin is good (looks nothing like Einon from Dragonheart hehe), Gary Oldman is unrecognisable as Sirius Black, Michael Gambon as Dumbledore is ok, but certainly no Richard Harris.

All the kids have grown up heaps, especially Dan Radcliffe. The kid who plays Neville Longbottom has lost all his fat, so doesn't look like Neville at all anymore.

The effects are great, especially Buckbeak and Marge's inflation!

A few of my gripes.. The sets felt too "indoors" - like the dementor scene at the end by the lake - the "lake" was a pond about 20 metres across not the huge lake that the kids need to go across in boats in first year (which is still in the movie as a really huge lake - I guess they thought it'd be too big to believe that Harry could see himself across it). The whomping willow as put on the side of a hill and rocks in this movie, not in the middle of a lawn like it was in the last movie. Warrick Davis was credited as "Wizard" but was not cast as "Flitwick" but some other small wizard. Professor Sprout didn't even get a look in. Crabbe and Goyle were both there, but more often than not it was Crabbe and some other nameless dude with Malfoy. Speaking of Malfoy, he was too snivelling and cowardly which seemed out of character. The whole Ron/Hermione thing annoys me. If I was Hermione I'd choose Harry, not Ron. The "I'm the king of the world bit" pissed me off - Harry didn't even like riding Buckbeak in the book. The names on the Marauders Map - Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot and Prongs are never explained, nor is it revealed that Lupin was one of the ones that wrote it.

Other than that there are the usual story deletions and rearrangements which are annoying if you've read the books, but I guess don't make a difference in the grand scheme of things.

But back to the ending. The reason I loved the book so much is the twist at the end, and the explanation of the whole story. But the twist is hinted at in the middle of the movie which I think spoils it. When it does come to explaining the twist, it's rushed over and it'd be hard to see anyone understanding or believing it.

Would I buy the dvd? Sure! Go see it, and stay for the credits, they're done all over the Marauders Map.
