And there was much rejoicing
two hours rebuilding and some help from mylex later and the raid 5 array in gamera is now working with redundancy (there'd been a dead disk in there for months which was causing me no end of worry)
all four disk show online and the logical drive shows as online also, it's no longer critical
yayyyyyyyyyyyy
all with zero downtime (except the reboot I did to make sure it'd all be happy)
now that is a big weight off my mind!
and to top it all off cia-support queue in RT is empty
/me a happy girl
And I have no idea what you're talking about!! LOL!

June 7, 2003 1:57 PMI thought a RAID array didn't have movable parts, i.e., disks?
June 8, 2003 12:25 PMRAID 5 disk arrays have three or more disks, with the last remaining one being for redundancy. So if you have three 36Gb disks in a RAID 5 array, you'll have 70Gb of usable disk space, with one being spare. If you have 4x 36Gb disks, you'll have ~105GB of useable space, with one being spare. Means you can have a disk fail and you won't actually lose any data. But it does mean you need to replace the bad disk before another one goes, otherwise you lose the lot.
This machine was running with 3 out of 4 disks for months, and so I was *exremelly* happy to have it working with redundancy again :)
