A Labyrinth Obsession

| | Comments (42)

Jareth

Exactly thirteen years ago tonight, on the 17th March 1990, I saw Labyrinth for the first time. This began an obsession which lasted very strongly for a year and a half, and extends even til now.

The first time I saw it I fell totally in love with David Bowie. I still believe he looked in best in the mid eighties. This also became an obsession :)

After seeing the movie for the first time, I hired it from the local video store and watched it a couple more times. After this I knew I had to purchase my own copy so that I could watch it whenever I wanted. I watched it pretty much every Friday afternoon for the next year or so. I learnt the entire script off by heart (I can still recite it all while watching it). I taped the movie to audio tape so I could listen to it, and used this to write the entire script out in hard copy (14 double sided lined A4 pages of my handwriting). One time I wrote out "Dance Magic" after an exam in high school when I was waiting for the exam to finish.

I found a photo-storybook version of the book and borrowed it for a couple of months straight, drooling over all of the beautiful pictures of Jareth in it. I even did a couple of drawings of them using lead, and also colour pencils (see the scans below). I'd love to find that book again and buy it, but I haven't seen it since 1990 and don't even know who it was by or what it was called.

I also found the soundtrack CD and bought it - even before I had a CD player. I had to get a friend to tape it for me so I could listen to it! I then proceeded to collect most of David Bowie's CDs as they were released by EMI through 1990 and 1991.

So here I am watching it again. I now make a point of watching the movie every year around the 17th of March just for fun and to drool all over Mr Bowie all over again :)~ It's just finishing now.. and for the life of me I could never understand why she didn't say "yes" when he said "Just fear me, love me, do as I say, and I will be your *slave*" - I would have LOL ;)

Below are scans of the pencil drawings I did during the height of my Bowie obsession. The first one obviously is not Jareth, it was in another biography book I borrowed from Sutherland Library at the same time as the Labyrinth book. The original scans are on conspiracy.

Hello, I have only just come across this post, over a year late :-) I am not sure if you have managed to find the Labyrinth book or not but it is called 'Labyrinth- The Photo Album' by Rebecca Grand. It is published by Owl books. I have seen them many times on Abebooks.com and also on eBay. I hope this helps. Love Kaz

I just wanted to say i am a huge fan of david bowie. I watch the movie almost every day. I never understood why she didnt say yes to him either. I would give up my brother any day for HIM!!!<3 i cry every time i watch it. He is so in love with her but she doesn't care. His music is also soo fantastic. I am so in love with everything about him. I am really trying to met him. i also agree David Bowie did look his best in the 80's. i actually am soo obsessed with him that i have plans to name my son JARETH DAVID (his first name comes from his character and his middle name comes from David's first name). People think i am really crazy for thinking he is amazing and soooooooooooooooooooo sexy! But David makes my life complete. i know it sounds stupid, but his music and movies speak to my soul.

Hey,

I have the same healthy obsession with Labyrinth. Spent forever finding the actual novelized version, which is slightly different. I was so crushed when they rereleased it on dvd and changed the beautiful cover. Actually, I saw David Bowie live last year, and it was the most amazing exerience! And yeah, Sarah was totally crazy for not saying yes.

Wow. There are a lot of comments on this particular section. Congrats, Kazza! Anyway, as some other people mentioned on here, I also was looking for Jareth pics and found this site and I also just got done downloading the sheet music for "As the World Falls Down." (I took piano lessons for eight years and am so glad I did!) The song is absolutely gorgeous. I think the movie is fantastic and as everyone else here, cannot understand why she turned him down. Who ever said that Toby would be unhappy as a goblin? I agree that David Bowie looks hottest as Jareth, but I think he's pretty fantastic all-around. I own quite a few cds, but not as many as I would like to! :) Well, Kazza I hope you get this message. Oh, and slightly disappointed you traced the drawings, but they still look fantastic. I'm going to college for art this year, but sadly I have never drawn Jareth.

Cool drawings! I didn't watch Labyrinth until fall 2002 when I was in 11th grade and I instantly fell in love with it and Jareth/DB! Soon after I saw my dad had a cassette of David Bowie's music so I listened to it and got into his music. I still write Labyrinth fanfics and RPs with a friend who I got into Labyrinth as well. I'm still obsessed and am slowly building a Labyrinth collection even if a lot of the photos are printed from online, lol!

David Bowie rocks the hair and is the perfect Goblin King. I would've said yes at the end, too!

______________________________________

People sometimes ask me, "How did David Bowie's eyes get like that?" (At least those who know how abnormally obsessed I am with the man.) As you may already know, Bowie has different colored- and sized eyes. The left is hazel and permanently dilated. The right is blue and normal. When Bowie around 13, he was punched in the left eye by a boy named George Underwood in a fight over a girl, and it permanently dilated the pupil and turned it hazel. (Actually, the left eye is not hazel, but appears that way. The rim of iris around it is still blue, yet that is unnoticable-- another strange fact from an admitedly strange person.) People think that he was stabbed in the eye with a Bowie knife, therefore he opted to change his name, but actually, he would be blind if that had happened. More Bowie facts coming soon (I told you I was obsessed).

I so love this page now...lmao. I just watched The Labyrinth for the first time on Saturday, March 17, 2010. I fell in love with it, just as you had. I can't stop listening and watching it, too! And now I am a David Bowie fan. Lol. I just figured out that we both watched it for the first time on March 17th...that's kind of weird/freaky and kool, all at the same time. My dad's fiancee's ex-step daughter brought it over to watch it and I hadn't heard of it before. I had heard of David Bowie but I never placed him. :) Thanks for makin' this page.

Hello everyone,

I couldnt be more happy to find this page.
Specillay now that I found myself really inmerse in the Labyrith Magic and unique Worl.
I dont if the page is still updated, but I hope so I can share with other Labyrinth´s fans
Well this is may history: I saw the movie 2 weeks ago, almost after 20 years since the last time I saw it when I was still young. Now I am in my 30´s.
But I cannot explain was has happened since there, is like something deep inside me isnt able to let go what I just saw.
To be honest when I was a child and saw Labyrinth was like ok its a only a movie just scare me in some parts but nothing more.
And now was like WOOOAAA what´s is happening...you know what I mean
I feel so much better to know that I am not alone and there are many people who loves this movie such as myself. ( I just discovered that)
Forgive my English I now its very good I am from latinoamerica.
And believe there any page in my countri dedicated to Labyrinth.
Thanks

Goodbye
